Now, I'm definitely not a fan of the 3 strike rule... but there comes a time when you just have to throw the white flag and face the facts that he's not fit for society.

You have the quote wrong, "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." H. L. Mencken

This guy can't get along, and has already cost us too much money. Into the pit!

I had to smack my brother in the face just now. He's sitting here with me, reading and enjoying the headlines, and when I clicked the link for this one and the picture popped up he exclaimed:
"Holy shiat he's whi-"
*SMACK*

The 3 strikes rule lets off serious criminals lightly and gives minor criminals ridiculous sentences.

What would be better is some king of exponential sentancing whereby after 3 times in jail you served 2 times the normal term, after 6 you served 4 times the term, after 9 crimes - 8 times etc.

That way even with small crimes, you'd quickly be out of the way of normal society.

Brilliant...but our legal system is composed of lawyers, and they can't do that kind of math.

There's definitely some good arguments to be made here. The three strikes laws do unfairly punish minor infractions, particularly when the "third" strike is something like possession of trace amounts of marijuana or possession of a weapon by a person with a conviction in another state.
But, at the same time, longer incarceration for repeat offenders does remove them from the streets and prevents career criminals from practicing.

As well as providing them with a steady supply of rape victims.

This is the UK, you can beat someone to death with a cricket bat because they looked at you funny, and as long as you've got a sob story about how hard it was for you growing up, you'll only spend a week or two in jail. Its essentially a revolving door system right now in the UK, and a lot of people have realized there's no reason to fear going to jail. Repeatedly. Because you won't stay in very long.

He will be out on weekends. So he doesnt get rusty in his trade or lose his drug habit. They even sometimes give rapists weekends off.
The homeowner with the bat must not have hurt them much, or he is lucky he got away with hitting them.

They thought they were going to a live-action game of Clue.

No seriously though, isn't it pretty hard to get guns in the UK? Whatever the circumstances, they still had really dangerous weapons. Can you imagine you're sitting having a nice lunch on your patio and 4 dudes wearing balaclavas come running in the yard carrying various weapons?

A Glasgow man who has been jailed 32 times is starting a new sentence for taking part in an armed raid in Edinburgh while out on bail.

Damn..

*thinking*

Meh..Not really. I soon realized he was a Scot..So, it's sorta like Michael Phelps at a pool.

Seriously..He got 50 months for this and 3 years supervised. What does he have to do in order for the gub'ment to understand that this is a career criminal and unless you throw him away, he's never going to stop.

My brother has been in and out of jail something like 6 or 7 times since he was 18. He got 7 years just about 7 years ago and went in and out about five times on "parole" despite repeatedly breaking it by never, ever adhering to the terms and/or breaking the law. He'd simply never show up to meet his parole officer and it would take up to 12 months for the state (MO) to issue a warrant and/or for him to get picked up on some misdemeanor and taken in on the warrant.

FARK: He just went back in a couple month ago on yet ANOTHER parole violation (this time playing the Home-Depot-Gift-Card-Scam Game*) and he's only going to have to serve like 90 days because that's all that's left on his term. Like other petty crimes, he never gets resentenced when he violates the law on Parole. My family gets so desperate that they'll CALL the parole office and tell them he's out of control and breaking the law. They just yawn.

*Popular drug-addict game where you can simply waltz into Home Depot or any number of other retail stores, pick stuff off the shelf and walk it to customer service. They'll only give you "store credit" for it, but then you can sell the card at $0.50 on the dollar to some sap in the parking lot (maybe you've been approached). In my brother's case, he was selling batches of them to a Pawn Shop who was placing them on Ebay.

The judge also ordered that Duffy should be kept under supervision for a further three years after his release.

his release??????!!!
supervision?????!!!!
correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't parole a "supervised" release from prison?
Something (like the 30 or so failed attempts) tells me that buddy here pretty much sucks at supervised release. He does, however, display a remarkable talent for all things jail. Perhaps it would be a good idea to nurture this man's gift and stop forcing him to be something he's not.

B.b.b.b.but then it wouldn't be like baseball! It's our "national pasttime", so it makes perfect sense for us to use it for our justice system.

I just want to know how they're going to work in the infield fly rule. Or four balls and a walk. Can you even walk with four balls?

why am i not surprised that a country that spends all its time bubble wrapping everything is unable to properly deal with a career criminal. At least here in the states we put our career criminals in congress so we can keep a close eye on them at all times.

If/when the bad guys break into your house, you can go cower in the corner and hope the cops get there sometime within a few hours. The 10s of millions of other responsible gun owners in the US don't need to wait for a third party to arrive to protect their families from an immediate and deadly threat. Enjoy, internet tough guy.

I normally expect to find these threads full of the extraordinarily ignorant nonsense, but this is actually a good idea.

Pity you spoiled it by misspelling "sentencing".
