God forbid, they take away caffiene too. I used to work at a 24hr shop a block from a psych center, and patients would go OFF on me if I didn't have a pot o'joe brewing.

I worked at the state mental hospital here in Hawaii, and they recently (well, less than 2 years ago) did the same thing. And it's not all that bad.

People have seriously over-estimated the benefits of smoking for people with schizophrenia. Before the big change, you might as well have called it "Marlboro State Hospital."

Oh, and they closely regular caffeine as well. Neither chemical -- nicotine or caffeine -- is as important as people seem to pretend. And what better place to get "clean" than in a controlled environment like a hospital.

I'm opening myself up for quite a bit of ridicule here on a couple of counts but here goes.

I was admitted to the mental health services portion of my local hospital not too long ago. Long history of depression etc., but left after a couple of days against medical advice due to a smoking ban campus wide. Which was pretty funny because you could see staff walking out in groups to smoke by the dumpsters at various points throughout the day anyway.

I do want to quit, I know it's bad for me, I know it's bad for others. What I couldn't do at that particular time was focus on trying to overcome the problems I was having at that point in my life and try to deal with not being able to smoke a cigarette. I probably could have dealt with it had they had let us go out by the dumpsters every few hours or so, but the idea of no smokes at all was too much for me to deal with, especially at that time.

I'm not complaining that the hospital is smoke free, I understand, they're a hospital, smoking is unhealthy, I get the correlation. I wouldn't expect them to have a happy hour for alcoholics either. I just wanted to say that it very well could be a factor in someone seeking the help they might need.

For a psych class in college, I volunteered at a state mental hospital. During our orientation, the staff told us about a patient who threw a lit cigarette butt into a small trashcan in the dormitory. When the papers in the trashcan caught on fire, the patient worried that he would get in trouble. So he carried the fiery trashcan across the room, burning his arms along the way, and hid it underneath his bed, hoping that no one would discover the fire. You can guess the rest of the story...

That sucks. I had a friend who checked in to a mental hospital, and EVERYONE there smoked. There was a courtyard in the middle, chock full of crazy people getting their nicotine on.

I brought my buddy a carton of smokes... gone in 36 hours. He chainsmoked, without sleeping, for a day and a half. He's fine now, and I can't help but feel I was part of the therapeutic process.

Usually the mental hospitals have a 'lighter' built into the wall. It's like a button you push, and you put the end of the cigarette in there, and it gets light. There aren't any open flames or matches for the crazies to play with. That was what I witnessed anyway.

Now there's a revelation. I never thought of smoking cigs AND pot. Wait, yes I have. I'm a smoker and I think this going overboard (has been for a while). I've never smoked so I'm not saying it's good for you. The chemicals in it aren't good for any part of your body. But there is a biological/chemical reason why such a large percentage of bipolar people smoke. Ditto for the schizophrenics and ADHD people. Nicotine does funny things.

I've been in acute care at mental health hospitals a few times. Smoking is one of the few things that make those hellholes bearable. You're sitting in the same 1k square feet, nothing to do but watch network TV soap operas and smoke. Oh and talk to the people. Most of them have no idea where they are because they're forced to be over-doped on meds, and none of whom want to be there. You're forced to either say what the doctors want you to say and take the horse tranquilizer, or accept that you'll be there for a long time.

Of course, some people opted to leave AMA (against medical advice). The hospital gets to hold them for 72 hours, during which time they go to a judge who hands out court orders like candy. These are places where you aren't allowed to have MAGAZINES because they have STAPLES in them. And they won't even let you smoke now?

It's always been more fun to hide and sneak a smoke. And these people have a good excuse, "you can't punish me, I'm nuts!"

Heh. I've heard a lot of people note that they are bipoloar, but I've only known 1 bipolar person, in my life. And he didn't smoke, but he does chew. In any case, I think being bipolar is something you are born with and you know fairly early on. Self-diagnosing yourself or saying you are bi-polar cause it's cool now is a different thing. While I can see why they did this, but I can't say it's a good idea. There are plenty of people who would not go to the hospital if they knew they couldn't smoke there.

Now, you could say they don't want to be well enough. But they're mentally ill. They aren't thinking clearly anyway. And schizophrenics, who frequently smoke, often don't really understand they're ill.

Standing up for the rights of the mentally ill doesn't garner much support ... or votes. As a society it's something people nervously make jokes about while trying to sound "that's not us". No different than homophobia.

This is a case of hospital administration focusing on trivial matters instead of meaningful efforts to improve quality of life for their patients. On the surface it can be spun as positive change; however, it is a waste of time and effort that should be focused on other initiatives.

From the article "It said that our people die 25 years before people who don't receive our services, and the reasons were all smoking-related,"

This statement indicates:
a) Patients with serious mental illness die on average 25 years earlier than the general population.
or
b) Patients with serious mental illness at their hospital die on average 25 years earlier than patients at other hospitals.

I would bet it's a case of "a)". Treating the symptoms of patients and not focusing on the disease is incompetent health care, but it allows the administration to claim progress.

This will get shot down in court if only someone has the courage to challenge it.
