In fairness...she works for the public and the house seems to be a nuisance to her...Hence public nuisance. Sounds right to me.

I'm going to remember that argument. I may need it some day!

Wow, I recognize that house from the pic in the article, and I know where it is. I live in the same neighborhood, just a few blocks away. I didn't know they let riff-raff like members of Congress live in my neighborhood--too bad, because it's a nice neighborhood. If you want to see a street view, go to Google maps and search for "w curtis & coleman 95818" and you'll see it.

Why does the Congresscritter from Long Beach need a house in Sacramento, anyway?

Same reason the Senator from New York had to buy a house there?

I don't get that either. There are plenty of state legislators from other parts of the state who have homes in Sacramento, because it's the capital and that's where they "work." Not the case with Congress, of course. It makes no sense.

Doesn't look as bad with Google Street View.

Presumably the Google Street View pic was taken when the house was still occupied, the lawn was still being mowed regularly, etc.

It's a wonder what a few months of neglect and Sacramento heat can do.

Screw her. If she used any of her pull to get Washington Mutual to undo that foreclosure, she deserves to be kicked out of office and publicly flogged.

/Glance at picture

I just mowed my lawn to get the 'public' off my back so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Yeah I don't think this lady is going to pull favors or accept bribes. She's beyond that. She's a self bankrolled politician.

I think she was in the state legislature prior to being elected to Congress in a special election after the previous representative died.

Did subby RTFA? Laura Richardson did not ask for this house to be declared a public nuisance. Code enforcement did this on their own.

She just sounds lazy. I mean, if she is popular she can't get some volunteer to go cut her lawn? Shiat, even staffers have been known to do such things from time to time for the "good of the cause".

/the WaMu thing does sound as suspicious as hell. But I bet the guy who bought the house is not going to biatch either, as he is a developer. So. no harm, no foul.

Wow, though...that's even MORE embarrassing. "Hey, Congresslady, not only are you a deadbeat, you're a public nuisance deadbeat. How's the reelection effort going?"

This is my representative.

In addition to defaulting on the mortgages of three homes, she also nearly totalled one of her government-paid-for cars, and then refused to pay the mechanic after being told the state dole wouldn't cover it.

Now, she has the distinction of having the most expensive car lease in the entire House of Representatives, $1500 a month for a 2007 Lincoln Town Car.

We're all very proud of her.

The best part: Thanks to gerrymandering, we're never going to get rid of her.

Why should she? Senator Conrad got a point taken off his loan (new window) and nobody cares. This isn't Republican-level corruption.

I think I'm missing the point, both the woman from the post and Conrad are Democrats. Not saying the other isle is any better, but given your example how does this have anything to do with Republicans?

She's about as responsible with her money as the president is with the US government's taxpayer's money.

Stay classy, Connecticut Republicans.

Five of the defaults occurred during a 13-month period over 2007-08 when Richardson was bankrolling her political career, lending her campaigns for Congress and Assembly a total of $177,500."Many elected officials are married, rely on two incomes or are independently wealthy," she wrote.

"I do not fit any of these descriptions," she added. "I made the decision to borrow money against my home to help finance my campaign. The election was too important to me, to our community and to our country to roll over."

She was making $120,233 a year on the Long Beach City Council.

Her congressional salary is $169,300 per year. She was elected in August of 2007 with a year and a quarter left in the term. So thats about $30000 more than she spent to get elected. She then bought a $535,000 second (third?) house in Sacramento in addition to her house in her home district. Possibly one in DC too. Then lost almost $190,000 on the Sacramento house.

She is either going broke in style or she makes money under the table.

Whether the politician is Republican or Democrat doesn't matter. Politicians are corrupt, period, end of story.

Can't we all see the big picture here? California just isn't paying its elected officials enough for all the hard work they do.

puffy999: This woman sounds like a big coont. I hope bad things happen to her.

This woman made her name in Long Beach being a big coont. Her ex-husband (LB's Police Chief, hardy-har-har) is breathing a sigh of relief that he abandoned ship when he did. Ironically, he originally abandonded ship due to political expediancy - coont was sitting on the LB City Council when he was up for Chief of Police; it would have been a nepotitious conflict of interest* for them to serve in those respective positions...so viola! A quick summary divorce.

/* that's pretty hilarious in the grand scheme of things, where Alan Lowenthal, his ex-wife Bonnie (a real divorce this time) and his daughter-in-law Suja have made careers of trading various LB elected positions amongst themselves.
//Long Beach resident
///don't look at me, I didn't vote for the coont
