Well, contrary to popular belief, bullets don't behave like in movies. There are a number of factors involved in causing serious injury to somebody. I suspect, though, that he was more likely injured by glass displaced when the bullet penetrated the windshield, or maybe a bit of shrapnel. They may have been far enough away that the impact on the windshield reduced the velocity on the bullet, as well.

As for the woman reporter, she might have been hit by a ricochet. Not enough bleeding for a direct hit.

Looks like the Russians are having fun shooting at news crews. A lot of reporters may not even realize that they are a "negative" asset to just about anybody on a battlefield, and unwelcome unless they are actively spreading propaganda for the side they are covering. There really is little use for reporters "in the action" - at best, they are giving away potential intelligence and at worst, they are actively working for the enemy. Mostly, they just see it as an opportunity to show the usual workings of war and call them "atrocities" without really understanding the laws of war.

/Sucks that we can't help the Georgians without starting WWIII

Reporters have no business in a war zone, period. End of story.

Quit building straw men to pile the hate on TV commentators you disagree with.

Hot reporter chick took a minor flesh wound in the forearm, they wrapped it up with gauze, she put on some body armor and went right back to reporting. Ballsy as hell.

Oh, you misunderstood what I was saying. I am not piling hate on anyone because I disagree with them. It is simply, as you say, that they have no business being there. They sit in their glass recording booths with people bringing them fresh water and pastries, and play armchair quarterback while the rest of the world deals with reality. They sit there and rag on soldier for battlefield decisions they made, and how they never would have done it, when none of them have gone through anymore more stressful than running out of cream cheese for their bagels.

Not only that, but it seems that most news crews don't understand that in the heat of battle, point something at soldiers from a distance is a *REALLY* good way to get killed.

From 100+ yards away, with bullets flying, it's often hard to tell the difference between a camera aimed at you and an RPG being aimed at you.

Actually, I was in Tbilisi during their little civil war in the early nineties.

Hearing light arms is one thing, but when the heavy machine guns kick in, even Gennady hits the floor.

In "House to House" by SSgt. Dave Bellavia, story of the battle for Fallujah (kicking in doors, getting shot to shiat, being bit in the crotch during hand-to-hand combat), SSgt Bellavia actually liked his embedded reporter, a guy named Mike Ware, CNN. Ware was an Australian who had spent tons of time amongst the insurgents, in quiet moments he held impromptu lectures regarding their tactics and changing motivations. When higher wasn't giving Bellavia good info on the status of nearby Marine units, Ware called Marine embeds by sat phone and gave him the score. Bellavia, a hero for covering the retreat of his unit from an ambush and subsequently going back in to clear it of 6 insurgents almost singlehandedly, returned to Iraq a couple years later as an embed himself.

Bellavia was definitely not a fan of the average reporter in the war zone, but they're not all scum.

Why not? They make their money piling on hate.

Of course, many of us recognized their rhetoric from the start, in the same way we recognized the rhetoric of Values politicians--morally bankrupt. These guys are oh-so-tough on the radio, but in real life they are pusillanimous ninnies.

Y'know, and they don't have to like me, and they are within their rights piling hate on me, and the OPPOSITE is true, asscrack.

True, but "good" embeds are basically poorly (combat) trained combat photographers/journalists. They also aren't trying to pretend to be neutral (or naive enough to think they are).

I follow you on that. We also have plenty of politicians around who do the same thing - but worse, they put constraints on our forces in the battlefield. Commentators contribute to this, of course, by pulling out polls and approval ratings. Once committed to a fight, commentators, politicians and their ilk need to step back and let the professionals get down to business.

I disagree. We need as many people as possible to report on what war is. The more distasteful it is to us, and the rest of the civilized world, the better.

The more expensive war is made due to reporters actions, the better.

It's one of several incidents in which journalists have been caught in the shooting between Georgian and Russian forces.

Well don't stand between two groups of people intend on murdering each other, pretty damn simple if you ask me.

I never quite understood where this notion that journalists should be treated like Red Cross personnel came from. They are civilians who deliberately place themselves in highly dangerous situations, and as such, take thier chances, Getting killed is God's way of telling them that they should have chosen a career where they don't have to risk thier life for thirty seconds of instantly forgotten television coverage.
