Bloody William: Protesting what?

It seems that Obama supporters do not appreciate his opponents referring to him by his full name. I don't think that's necessary, but then the loudest complaints around here come from people who think things like "pancakes" and "McSame" contribute to thoughtful political discourse. Frankly, both those kinds of people make me question the wisdom of universal franchise.

Constantly hammering on "Hussein" as a name is stupid because you're doing it to provoke a xenophobic reaction. Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii to an American mother, went to school at Harvard, lived in New York, and developed his political career in Chicago. He is as American as you or I, whether you want to question his language, his traditions, or his beliefs. He is an American.

But honestly, that alone isn't what bothers me. The coy bullshiat is what really pisses me off. No, you are not just "referring to him by his full name." You are not just "pointing out his middle name." You are pointedly referencing it with every chance you get because of the political benefits you think you might gain. You are constantly mentioning that he is Barack Hussein Obama because you think you might scare away enough people who have "had enough of Hussein," or who are stupid enough to think he might have something to do with the Arab world. You're not even admitting it. It's disingenuous and, frankly, cowardly. shiat, you guys use Obama's middle name more than you did Hillary Rodham Clinton's middle name, even though she expressly uses the damn thing herself.

Well, soon enough, just about everyone on the server changed their names to "Big Black Camper" or "Big Black CominAtcha" or "Big Black Racist-slayer" or anything along those lines. Ran the dude off the server. Pretty funny. ;)

Protesting the cynical, deliberate use of HUSSEIN when referring to Obama. Of course, those accused of doing so just say that's Obama's middle name, so what's the big deal? However, you don't see or hear anti-McCain people going around using SIDNEY in a charged way - or in any way, for that matter.

I don't think it's worth getting upset over. Maybe a momentary chastising, but changing one's Facebook name seems like a bit of an overreaction.

Elmo Jones 2008-08-14 04:59:46 PM
It depends on the context (like most things). I can call you "sir" in a way that actually means "fukc you". You'll know it, I'll know it, but it's nothing you can prove.
When someone calls Sen. Obama "Barack HUSSEIN Obama", that's an "OMG he's a muslim racist manchurian candidate!!11!" moment.
It's his name, but it's no big deal, unless you insist on emphasizing it, and don't refer to Sen. McCain as "John Sydney McCain III".

My father sent this email to me today.

The Presidential election was too close to call. Neither the Republican candidate nor
the Democrat candidate had enough votes to win.. There was much talk about ballot
recounting, court challenges, etc., but a week-long ice fishing competition seemed the
sportsman like way to settle things. The candidate that caught the most fish at the end
of the week would win the election.

Therefore, it was decided that there should be an ice fishing contest between the two
candidates to determine the winner.

After much of back and forth discussion, it was decided that the contest take place on a
remote frozen lake in northern Minnesota .

There were to be no observers present, and both men were to be sent out separately on
this isolated lake and return at 5 P.M. with their catch for counting and verification
by a team of neutral parties. At the end of the first day, John McCain returned to the
starting line and he had ten fish.

Soon, Obama returned and had no fish. Well, everyone assumed he was just having another
'bad hair' day or something and hopefully, he would catch up the next day.

At the end of the 2nd day John McCain came in with 20 fish and Obama came in again with
none.

That evening, Harry Reid got together secretly with Obama and said, "Obama, I think John
McCain is a low-life, cheatin' son-of-a-gun. I want you to go out tomorrow and don't
even bother with fishing. Just spy on him and see just how he is cheating."

The next night, after John McCain returns with 50 fish, Harry said to Obama, "Well, tell
me, how is McCain cheating?"

Obama replied, "Harry, you're not going to believe this, but he's cutting holes in the
ice!"

I agree with what you say about the a-holes that say "Barack Hussein Obama" and then very innocently, "What's the problem? I'm just saying his name?" They are definitely bottom of the barrel, xenophobic hate-mongers.
