It's a cakewalk to Washington for Franken. He's got celebrity, he's got plenty of money, and he's a liberal running for one of the more liberal states in the nation. I don't know if Coleman would have even got the job in the first place if Wellstone didn't die.

Franken is a tool. He does not want a senate job because he thinks he will be good at the job, he wants it so he has a platform to mouth off from.

JADP, but in my experience it tends to be Republicans who really, really hate Stuart Smalley.

Which is why I'm really, really looking forward to this meme getting FARKed to death during the (first) six years of Senator Franken's tenure.

I lump Franken in with all the other political talking heads on TV (IOW, I ignore him), but I will give him this: He is actually walking the walk and running for office. I'd like to see Rush, O'RLY or Olberman but their giant piles of money where their even bigger mouths are and actually run for public office and put into practice all these great ideas they spout off daily.

If I remember, Franken overlooked a sum of money he owed in taxes. Something that, to someone like him, would be just a little bit. Like Olbermannwatch blowing a huge scandal about Olbermann owing $3,000 or so.

Riiiight. That explains why Dick Durbin has so much more power and influence in society than bottom feeders like Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly.

Here's a free hit off the clue bong for you, BlorfMaster: nationally syndicated TV and radio shows, the ability to sell out live appearances and crank out a string of best-selling books provide a slightly better platform to mouth off from than a Senate seat, if that's your agenda.

The tax issue where the $70,000 was actually paid, but just not to the right states?

(anyone ever do jobs all over the country? ever have a problem sorting out what gets paid to whom? then you get the totality of the Franken tax problem.)

It might actually mean something if he hadn't paid the taxes, but since he did, this is really reaching if you are going for "scandal."

Willing to let me take a look at your tax returns from 2003-2006? Want to make any bets as to whether or not I could find some errors?

Dude, I'm an attorney and I've had some fairly significant problems with taxes in the past when I have worked multi-state jobs. Determining where the tax liability actually accrues can be rather complicated. His accountant prepared the tax returns, the accountant calculated what was owed to each state and as a result Franken overpaid in some states and underpaid in others.

If that's your standard, then I doubt 95% of the officeholders (including Norm Coleman) meet it. But somehow I doubt you apply that standard to them. (Nor would you likely apply it to yourself as you have undoubtedly - if you've ever made any decent money at all or worked across state lines - made similar errors in your own tax calculations.)

Huge difference between trying not to pay and the situation with Franken.

I like how Coleman's campaign is run just like McCains... don't say what's good about yourself, just bash the other guy.

Coleman was running these stupid ads talking about how Franken didn't pay taxes (he in fact overpaid, just to the state he lived in, not the state he worked in) when Coleman is under investigation himself.

Of course, the only reason Coleman is our Senator is because of the tragedy of Paul Wellstone and the buffoonery of the DFL putting Walter Mondale on the ticket in his place instead of Wellstone's son.

From Wiki -

"Coleman's politics have changed dramatically throughout his political career. In college, Coleman was a liberal Democrat and was actively involved in the anti-war movement of the early 1970s. He ran for student senate and opined in the school newspaper that his fellow students should vote for him because he knew that 'these conservative kids don't fark or get high like we do (purity, you know)... Already the cries of motherhood, apple pie, and Jim Buckley reverberate through the halls of the Student Center. Everyone watch out, the 1950s bobby-sox generation is about to take over.'"

If McCain and Obama can change their positions in senior citizenhood and adulthood, why can't Coleman change positions from when he was a college student?

Larson is paid by Colman for PR work and Colman lives in his basement for $600.00 a month when he is in Washington. Frankin's people seem to want to make this into something that just isn't there. He can get old and sell out like anyone else, but we can make fun of it all we want. Too bad, so sad. It's just hilarious seeing a guy who celebrated, in all THAT means, his 20th birthday at Woodstock and looked like this at the time -

bravenewfilms.org

Go on to say this -

"I oppose the legalization of marijuana because, as noted by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, marijuana can have serious adverse health affects on individuals. The health problems that may occur from this highly addictive drug include short-term memory loss, anxiety, respiratory illness and a risk of lung cancer that far exceeds that of tobacco products. It would also make our transportation, schools and workplaces, just as examples, more dangerous."

It's just funny when people turn into people who their younger selves would've hated.

Anyone in Minnesota have a feel for how the race is going right now? I hit Wiki to see the last polls, and got this -

Rasmussen, 7/22 - 49-46 Franken

Quinnipiac, 7/24 - 53-38 Coleman

I mean, if I had to guess, I'd say the Rasmussen result is closer to the truth. Maybe Al announced he was writing When a Man Loves a Woman 2 on July 23rd or something, I don't know.

If Minnesotans are really worried about candidates saying crass things in their past, I mean...Al could always use that first-ever Coleman for President stump speech in that old college newspaper. Coleman would've used it against him, after all.

Now that I think about it, he probably shouldn't. Voters' bowels would get in an uproar if Al put out an ad saying "In the words of Norm Coleman, 'conservatives don't fark or get high like we do.' I agree. I'm Al Franken and I approve this message" or whatever, haha.

Norm strikes me as a Schwartzenegger-like candidate who had the misfortune to run for office when the now-discredited GOP seemed in ascendence.
