(Some Guy) Dumbass Congressman claims that trees contain 40% crude oil. Wants to start cutting down national forests to solve the oil crisis. Why didn't anyone think of this sooner?   (unequivocalnotion.typepad.com) divider line 219

The guy who commented first seems to be giving Sali credit by assuming he really meant biofuel.

I'm not so sure that's warranted.

I don't burn pellets, but just split wood. I haven't burned a drop of oil in the wintertime in about 4 years, and don't plan on doing so any time soon.

unless you've got your own free supply of wood, the price of cord wood has gone up like crazy because of oil. it's still a bargain though.

It's the same Congressman who seems a little confused about what district he represents.

That was greenlit to the politics tab yesterday and I mentioned the oil thing there. Someone else pointed out that he's also another religious nutcase who seems to think we're a Christian nation and multicultralism is bad.

Who elected this idiot again?

Yep! When I run out of my own logs and whatnot (I have a crapload, guessing it'll last me another year or so), I've been getting trees every now and then from a buddy of mine who takes them down. He takes the down, charges the customer for removal and what-not, and tosses me a freebie every couple weeks.

I make high grade charcoal with wood for my forge. Usually alder or oak but softwoods work almost just as well. Wood is a fine fuel.

Growing up my dad engineered his own design for a wood burning furnace to heat the house. It was basically an oil tank with a barrel in the middle with the fire. Worked pretty well. But dad was an engineer and part-time Goldberg impostor. I swear my folks had to draw up a manual on how to operate the damned house when they sold it.

Still not great for the environment, but priorities is priorities. And this was back in the late 80's before anyone knew what a carbon footprint was.

Marcus Aurelius [TotalFark] 2008-08-14 10:35:21 AM
There's nothing wrong with methanol except that it's cheap, plentiful, easy to produce, and for some damn reason you can't burn it in your car.

Actually, he's right, you can get loads of crude out of wood.

1. Fashion wood into pipeline.
2. Connect pipeline to oil tank, open valve.
3. Lots of oil come out of the wood.

There was a Rep from outside Philadelphia that once said in an interview that abortion and birth control should be outlawed because women only get pregnant when they want to. We apparently have some sort of chemical in our brain that makes us not conceive. (This was back in the late 80s early 90s)

Nothing these people say surprises me. It's that they keep getting reelected which boggls my mind.

Defiance_ 2008-08-14 11:00:54 AM
There's woodgas too, which works pretty well. Some people even run cars off of it, but I think the massive burn chamber detracts from the car's sleek body lines.

Methanol fuel cells are the way to go, I think. Screw hydrogen.

So someone actually believes that there is oil in trees? Ok well it doesnt surprise me, but then why havent we been making oil instead of paper all these years?

Methanol isnt really easy to make, nor is it cheap. First you gotta break down the cellulose, then you have to wash out the impurities that you put in by breaking it down. Sure it can be done, but it isnt cheap yet. Most methanol is made from natural gas rather than wood due to difficulty in breaking down the wood itself.

Methanol is a good fuel for a high compression engine, except it has no lubrication qualities, so you need to run a light oil with it to save the valves and guides. Methanol will support even higher compression ratios and boost than will ethanol, but at a cost of more fuel needed. Mileage will drop even more with methanol than with ethanol, particularly if you have a low compression, camel whiz gasoline tuned engine.

An added bonus is if you are set up to run methanol you can easily run ethanol in the same engine and fuel system, provided your compression ratio is under 15:1. Sure gasoline provides a bit more heat when it burns, requiring less fuel in a low compression engine, but it needs additives to run in a high compression engine, like tetra ethyl lead.

Multiple sources for fuel, including gasoline, ethanol, methanol, hydrogen and electric are a much better idea than a single fuel for everything. In fact gasoline is the only fuel listed that wont run in a high compression engine on its own, and increased compression means increased efficiency.

Oil from trees is idiotic, fuel from trees isnt, but there are easier places to get the fuel than trees. The same thing can be made from yard waste, in nearly the same manner.

/sorry for the book length reply
//are all politicians idiots?

I wish we'd get a clue about those seeds. High fuel output and they aren't any good as food. Seems like a biofuel win-win to me.
