As always, Houston is the cultural epicenter of our fine country, and I am proud to be be from a city whose artistic impact is felt in the very fabric of society of all other developed nations.

Oh good god.. ghetto trash rap..nice, this thread will go swimmingly.

Dear Farkers,

The smart Hip-Hop community dislikes and disowns most of the rappers you see named in the winners list at the end there. Please do not assume that all rap is the same, nor remotely associated with these clowns.
God damn I HATE this type of rap and the mentality/ideals it breeds.. I wish it would go away or change the message they preach.

Unfortunately, these "artists" are the ones most unknowing people hear when they say "let me turn on the rap channel and see what is popular these days". XM Raw, I'm looking with detest in your direction.

On behalf of the smart/positive/thoughtful members of the Hip-Hop community, I apologize.

True story:

A few years back, a good friend of mine got a house as part of an inheritance. He decided to keep it and make it his own dwelling, so he informed the then-tenants that their lease would not be renewed. The house and yards had fallen into some disrepair -- his now-deceased father had been the landlord, and nobody had taken the initiative to keep things maintained during the months his dad was sick.

He moved in, and immediately went to work getting the house back in order. Once it was done, he had a housewarming party for some of his closest friends, myself included.

When we went to the back yard and saw lush grass where, just a few weeks before, only some weeds and dirt had been, we congratulated him. I made the mistake of asking him whether he had used a prefab lawn. His reply:

"Yes, and now that you are in such awe, you must KNEEL BEFORE SOD!"

New artists? Trae's been on the houston scene for the last decade. He's more Bun B than he is a Mike Jones or Paul Wall. Try listening to the music before you get all "captain save-a-hiphop". You sound more close minded than the "rap is cRap" brigade. I'm an east coast cat that grew up on pause tapes and crate digging and even I'm down with good southern music like ugk, goodie mob, the geto boys and outkast.

As for "ghetto trash rap"...who's going to be recognized as more important 20 years from now? "ghetto" rappers like Raekwon, Nas, and biggie or Murs and slug, or whatever alternative indie hiphop is the flavor of the month now.

Hiphop was born in the ghetto during a hot summer of rioting and looting. Don't forget that

And Mike Jones deserved to get knocked the fark out just for being Mike Jones

But he wasn't talking about Raekwon, Nas, Biggie, etc, the article listed talentless douches like Lil Wayne, Shawty Lo, and Webbie. That "Independent" song by Webbie is pretty much on par with a Soulja Boy "song."

The "rap" you hear on mainstream radio, etc, sucks, bad. I don't even understand how you can mention artists like Nas, Raekwon , etc in the same sentence as people that make shiat like this:

The quality of today's hiphop isn't because of "ghetto trash" or the so-called ignorance of poor folk, its due to corporatization and commodification of music. When you have A&R representatives picking teenagers up, giving them a couple of thousand bucks for a ringtone single and dropping them the minute something new comes along, it's no surprise that the quality of music is going to decline drastically.

None of this has to do with whatever you think a "ghetto mentality" is. I've lived in Camden, Jersey and New York and no one here is listening to Mims or soulja boy. If you want to point a finger at who's hurting hiphop, look at the multibillion dollar major labels and the suburban audience that's buying into fetishized and manufactured pop-rap.

Living next to some of these suburban idiots, I can attest their taste in music really sucks. Too bad they think everyone within a ten mile radius would be delighted to hear their poor taste in music.

I work in the music industry so I totally agree with you on those facts, I have no problem with "ghetto rap" as he called it above. The problem is like you said all the "pop-rap" shiat that is all over the radio and I assume MTV.

Underground Hip-Hop like Murs, the Grouch, Freestyle Fellowship, Del Tha Funky Homosapien/Heiroglyphics, Living Legends, Kool Keith, Mikah 9 and the like have always been superior to any of the commercial rap. And Aceyalone > all, Book of Human Language is the best Hip-Hop album of all time easily.

Anyone remember this scene from Superman 2?

Little Boy: Please, Mister-!
Ursa: He's a General.
Little Boy: Please, Mister General! Please let my daddy down!

Anyone else notice it was a southern town and the sherrif who was the kid's daddy had a southern drawl, yet his son had an English accent? I guess the kid could be adopted but that accent just did not fit in with the rest of the scene.

Did someone say slug was ghetto rap... I think they are confused.
Real hiphop comes from the Twin Cities.

Jamrock 2008-08-14 11:42:28 AM
It should be neither of them. Cities have mayors, first off. Second of all, I've never heard of Trae, but there's no way he could be as talentless a rapper as Mike Jones, especially considering there are people in Houston that can rap, not just yell and repeat basic phrases to a beat..
