I know that a lot of cops are "good" cops and that many times these people are seemingly violent and unpredictable, but does it seem to anyone else that the police are a bit, um, excessive in their use of tasers? Just because it's non-lethal doesn't mean it's always a good idea.

Yes, I'm kidding, but remember the experiment where 'guards' were put in charge of 'prisoners'.

Right, but I much prefer the old days of the nightstick. It's cheap, effective, low-tech (doesn't break or mis-fire), and it gets the job done. More importantly, a competent officer can wield it effectively and use it as much as a deterrent as he can an item of force. That and if you abuse it, the victim would have the marks to prove it (and it would look bad, which is something the tazers lack, making it easier to prove excessive force).

cops have tasers to keep from wailing on someone with batons or getting themselves hurt when someone decides to get ignorant. If you don't wanna be tazes, don't be stupid. Sounds like these folks got stupid and got what they deserved in the end.

Yes, you're right.
But in this case, if the "taser victim" is assaulting the police, like in TFA, I'd say it was a good idea and appropriate use of the taser.

I think this one falls under the "More to the Story" category. It's been my experience that those volunteers with reserve police units tend to get cockstrong when called on to serve in their reserve police officer volunteer duties. I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that the wanna-be said something out of line to the rube and he reacted.

Even with the most competent officer using a nightstick, something can easily go wrong and someone will get seriously hurt. Accidents do happen even to the best trained people in the world.

Has for a deterrent, this and most other stories, would be different if the cop had sneaked up behind the guy and just tazed him in the back. But that isn't what happened, like in most cases were the tazer is used, the cops would have warned him multiple times that they will use it. If people are still too stupid to realize that cops will use a tazer after being warned to stop, a night stick isn't gonna be much help has a deterrent either.

If I ever am drunk / stoned enough to be this stupid, I would rather be tased than clubbed and/or tackled by cops.

It has been repeatedly proven that tasers are safer than being beaten by billy clubs or forcibly subdued by multiple cops.

There is an issue of police using tasers far too often but, if the details of this article are true, then this is not one of them.

lajimi: I'm waiting to see a Taser misfire and send the charge back into the cop, now THAT would be fun to watch.

For that to happen a cop would have to shoot himself with the probes. Look up a DC circuits 101 course please.

When an officer is involved, yes, tazering is possible. Don't want to get tazered or maced? Comply with the order. You lose nothing but 10 'internet tough guy' points for compliance. If they command (yes, command, not ask) you to stop, drop, whatever, obey at the time. Even if they are 'violating your civil liberties'. Because while you might have infinte time afterwards to sort out what happened, the cops have to deal with the sudden and instant pressing issues of containing a situation and keeping themselves and others from harm. A competent lawyer will do you good if they bugger you there due to lack of due process.

Never incriminate yourself. But always be respectful to the cops, because they can shoot your ass. My personal motto has not failed me yet.

But then I am a white average hieght/build male with brown eyes/hair. Ergo I am 'the man' incarnate.

Continue with your pig hate.

From some of the comments on that page from people who were there, this seems like another "bike rider assaulting a police officer" incident from recent video news...

It's to protect the "innoccent." Basically it's there so that others don't think John Doe at 908 Freebird Rd. committed sodomy on a donkey when it was really John Doe at 132 Journey Pk. It's not really to punish the people, but to make sure there isn't any confusion as to the identity of the person in the article.

Also, has anyone pointed out the son was 34 and the parents were both in their 60s? I was expecting either a teenager or young kid and middle age father, not a 34-year-old son and 60 year old father (with granny getting into the act as well).

On the other hand, if a cop gets constipated, who gets charged with obstructing an officer?
