*sigh*

what part of "lock the door, retards" requires meetings and city-wide campaigns to understand?

Beck Bristow 2008-08-10 06:38:35 PM
Someone got into three unlocked vehicles

no, someone opened the door.

SphericalTime [TotalFark] 2008-08-10 06:52:19 PM
Turning on dome lights is considered vandalism? Someone needs to be slapped upside the head for that one.

labman [TotalFark] 2008-08-10 06:59:27 PM
There is a very easy way. Pass a law saying that unlocked vehicles will be impounded. The towing companies will gladly go out every night and check all the doors and tow the offenders for the easy money they will earn.

The idiots will also not be on the road the following day, so it's a win win.

Or, just lock your doors.

Where does TFA say "Local communities plan meetings and expensive, city-wide campaigns to see if there's any simple way to prevent people from breaking into unlocked cars?"

azxj 2008-08-10 08:00:10 PM
Yep. That's an appropriate use of the "dumbass" tag.

God I wish these farking women would get jobs and stop congregating. Go back to the kitchen, biatches. Make me a sammich.

I remember the days when you could tell your friend's wife to make you a sammich, and the husband would be like "Good idea, make that two, honey!"

Wtf happened to the simple times?

Headline is full of win.

You appear to be new here, so let me explain. Sometimes on Fark, the second sentence in a headline is completely fabricated by the submitter.

I like your thinking. Would anyone else like to pool their money together and purchase a ranch in Texas. Seriously, I'm in.

poxic 2008-08-10 08:07:15 PM
In some neighbourhoods, it's better to leave your doors unlocked. Thieves can prove to themselves you don't have anything worth stealing without smashing your windows.

In other neighbourhoods, no one needs to lock their doors. We call these "small towns with no bored teenagers".

nosepicker 2008-08-10 08:08:29 PM
This was a complete waste of my time, both the article and the comments, and now my reply here. good day

Tweeker 2008-08-10 08:08:49 PM
Is it wrong to leave your car unlocked just because its contents are worth less than replacing a window?

soupergenyus 2008-08-10 08:09:11 PM
Bad: They left their doors unlocked and were surprised that this happened
Worse: They actually called the police.
Even Worse: The police didn't beat them for wasting their time.
Worst: It made the news and the news didn't mention how these retarded these people were for wasting the police's time

Just get LED bulbs. It's effectively impossible to run down the battery on those, short of leaving them on for a year (the natural battery drain would probably be higher).

Helen_Arigby 2008-08-10 08:17:36 PM
What's the bets the owners just forgot to shut their doors properly and there were no mysterious vandals involved?

/or goths or huns
//it's a long way to go just to screw with people's lights
///personally my fave is "visigoths"--just yell it loud in an evil bad guy voice!

I came in here to complain about suburbanites, but it turns out it was in south-central Pennsylvania, I'll just point of the middle of our fair state is, in fact, functionally retarded.

I live in Seattle, where a locked door is an invitation to get your windows broken. I have an 80's Volvo wagon, a road trippin' machine, but cosmetically unappealing. Love it! I have a security chip in the dash, remove it when we are done driving, and never lock my doors. I did, however, have to get a locking gas cap. Oh well, city livin' and all that.

I leave my car doors unlocked. Getting a jump start is better than having your car window smashed. If someone wants into my parked car at 2 am, they're going to get in. Door locks are only useful if they aren't willing to break the window or use a slim jim. A few years ago, the parking lot outside my apartment complex had every car hit in a two week time period. Door locks? window smashed. Car alarm? ignored.

If you're concerned about your dome light running down your battery, remove the light bulb from the dome light fixture.

wagnerism 2008-08-10 08:27:17 PM
The cops are wasting time on this?

They should be thankful that the only thing that happened was a run-down battery. That is quite an inexpensive lesson.

Now if someone left a live opossum in there, then that'd be a farkworthy story.

I'm getting into the habit of leaving the top down on my car when I take it places. Seriously, there's nothing inside it that is worth more than what it would cost to repair the roof. If you really want to steal a car, you might want to find something less conspicuous than a bright red 69 mustang convertible.

Just consider this though...car thieves aren't rocket surgeons. If they don't think to try the door, they'll smash your window anyway.

As a thief you try to keep a low profile, so you'd check the door first, just to make sure it's unlocked before smashing the window. I've had my car broken into 4 times in three different cities (three in Dallas TX, Ft. Worth TX, Denton TX and Chicago IL). Never once was my window smashed. My mom's car was broken into once, her doors were unlocked, and her windows weren't smashed either. Her dome light was ripped out. Actually, the best thing about my mom's break in was that I bought her a new car stereo less than two weeks prior and she had the face plate in her apartment. The factory installed stereo (tape deck and AM/FM stereo) was in the trunk in the box her new stereo came in (MP3, CD, etc...). So imagine the look on the face of the guy who stole that box, feeling it's weight, thinking the stereo printed on the box is what's inside, only to find a ten y.o. broken radio.

On the one hand it's damned lame vandalism, on the other hand, it's hilarious. It doesn't hurt anything too badly (a jump start fixes everything), does no permanent damage, and is sort of funny.

dallas, ft worth, denton, chicago....

4.

as for 3 in dallas that leaves 1 break in for 3 cities...

Where the hell did you learn math?

Gangis 2008-08-10 09:08:55 PM
Hmm... my '02 Toyota Solara automatically arms the alarm after 30 seconds of turning off the car and closing the door, and locks itself after a couple minutes. I better not live in one of these areas...

Yeah, but if you're gonna steal a car, might as well steal one with style.

kroonermanblack 2008-08-10 09:13:11 PM
Opening an unlocked car to steal things, thieves usually turn off the dome light. Because it attracts attention.

I left my car unlocked once. Once. I lost a PSP and my grandfathers tool box (both in the trunk). Guess what item I will miss for the rest of my life.

As the old saying goes: locks keep an honest man honest. By locking your car, you insure that someone must really really want to vandalize your car (break a window) ergo set off the alarm, ergo atract attention.

RoadRunnr 2008-08-10 09:14:45 PM
I had a friend in Chicago that had her windows broken four or five times, when the doors were unlocked. She actually put a sign in the window that said "Attention Thieves: The doors are unlocked, please do not break my windows!"

Coco LaFemme [TotalFark] 2008-08-10 09:15:36 PM
If you're stupid enough to leave your doors unlocked, you deserve having your car stolen and/or vandalized. I know someone who left her car unlocked over night, with the keys on the seat. The next morning....guess who had no car? Then she had the nerve to be shocked and angered. I was laughing at her, saying "you left the keys on the seat and the car unlocked, you dumbshiat.....what did you expect?"

Perhaps she should have addressed the sign to the vandals instead.

This car guarded by tired, grumpy, pissed-off guy with a shotgun 3 nights each week. You guess which 3 nights.

Agreed. I always lock my doors, though its mostly so my friends won't show up at 3:00 in the morning and mess with the inside of my car.
