I would have to say that is indeed ironic.

Smoky the Bear says: "cough, cough, don't smoke."

Where there's smoke [alarms], there's fire.

The correct use of the "Ironic" tag? Glad I lived to see it.

/like rain on your wedding day

Golf clap for correct use of ironic tag.

Smokey Bear's middle name isn't "the". :(

...and I just got back from a wedding where it rained.

It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a flaming smoke detector.

After discovering the source, they called 911 emergency response. At roughly 8:42, the police and fire department responded.

Shouldn't the Fire Department show up first to put out the fire?

Or do the cops get there first for the first deep breath of your grow-op on fire?

/Don't Bogart that house fire my friend.

Meiocyte 2008-08-10 06:51:10 PM
It's definitely the worst smoke alarm ever. In fact, it's worse than Hitler.

NOT IRONIC!

I would dub thee ironic if it was a device that put fires out!
If a sprinkler in the house caught aflame, THEN i would consider it ironic.

/irony police woo woo woo

I was getting ready to argue your point, but then I realized, the smoke alarm still did its job, in a way, just not as advertised.

BKred 2008-08-10 07:06:11 PM
Could this be the first case of a truly correct use of the irony tag? I'm usually one of the people to biatch and moan about improper irony tag usage, and I must say I see nothing wrong with its use here. Three cheers!

WizardofToast 2008-08-10 07:18:02 PM
My smoke alarms have been farked up. They sometimes go off early in the morning, but when my bread got stuck in the toaster and smoked the house, they didn't do a single thing.

Ronin_S 2008-08-10 07:19:57 PM
This is the reason we need a FAIL tag around here.

theorellior 2008-08-10 07:21:20 PM
WizardofToast: but when my bread got stuck in the toaster and smoked the house, they didn't do a single thing.

How's the bread get the house in the wrapping papers?

AntiNorm [TotalFark] 2008-08-10 07:22:19 PM
If it uses ionization (like most smoke detectors do), there is a small amount of radioactive Americium in it. Did any of that get into the air?

A device that is meant to help during a fire, causing a fire, meets a definition of irony.

Also, when you watch a horror movie, and the woman's back is to the camera, and she's walking backward scared, and we know she's gonna bump into the killer, that's irony too, you know.

/there's more than one kind, you know
//damned Fark elitists

Merely a plan backfiring.

JewZeppy: Sorry, not irony.

"an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected"

A smoke alarm causing a fire is pretty contrary to what was or might have been expected.

I swear, Fark wants so badly to prove its intelligence that it rushes headfirst into that moran protester

Kid Mojo 2008-08-10 07:38:43 PM

That's like saying the towers falling on 9-11 is ironic because they were designed not to fall. Or a pitcher tries to throw a strike but throws a ball.

\Need more than "results contrary from expected".

\\Giuliani'd. Thank you, thank you.

The irony police should probably all go pick up these smoke detectors, so maybe they can DIAF.

I see your point, but look at it this way: The smoke detector put the homeowners in a situation that it's supposed to help them escape from. That's 100% Grade A irony in my book.

Electrical devices cause fires. What is ironic about that?

It was a smoke alarm. It set itself on fire. Clearly depressed. Cheap imported 9 volt battery.
To call a suicidal smoke detector ironic is a stretch. And racist....... what?
Vegas.... free drinks.....
