(Insert CravenMorehead's pic) Is this about the "real guitar" versus "the digital stuff" shenanigans? It's stupid. "Real guitars" can combine with digital stuff, no?

It's not that it was bad. It's just that it sounded like the forgettable chorus for a Matchbox 20 song.

c'est que 'air tapping'? You mean that ever-so-technical 'hammer-on' technique?

Dude's not bad, but I second the 'sounded like a forgettable chorus' guy above. I'll give him a second look when he learns to improvise over those chord changes he's layin' down.

Of course I clicked on the link. It's the obligatory real guitar is better than GH.

Well, the guy did get two parts down just like Steve: a) sitting down, and b) not needing to make guitar-solo grimaces to kick ass.

Why post this stuff? So he has some fancy schmancy techniques. It doesn't make a difference if the song is BORING.

Would you rather listen to a great song without the flash or a guy sweep picking up and down the fretboard for 5 minutes?

That's all you kids care about these days: the little tricks and flashy flourishes that make the audience cum in their pants. If I wanted to watch someone masturbate I'd put a mirror next to my computer monitor.

Get off my lawn.

Was thinking something more like THIS (poppity)

kallahan 2008-08-10 11:57:16 PM
"Spanish styled sweep-picking" seriously? That's called raking and its about a thousand times easier than sweep picking, sweep picking requires you to mute with your fretboard hand immediately after the note rings out and then either hammer on or pull off to the next note or time you stroke to hit the next string as you fret the note. Raking is just holding a cord then strumming slowly over it. It's the difference between House of the Rising Sun and Through the Fire and the Flames.

Sphaux 2008-08-11 12:45:21 AM
I like this dude, but I can understand why some of you find it boring or forgettable. There's absolutely no dynamic variation. There is no cohesive melody line. It's the kind of thing that needs another instrument or voice over top of it.

/decent chill music
//song should be called "Variations on Two Chords"

desertshadowz 2008-08-11 01:14:25 AM
Erik Mongrain is a decent guitarist within this
genre and I agree that this particular song sux.

However if you want to visit the current master, click the
link below.

Phil Keaggy is another fair guitar player but uses
WAY too many effects to be considered a genius in this type of playing.

Michael Hedges and Will Ackerman invented (or perfected) this style of playing.

I have played various guitar and bass styles for over 35 years and while certainly not an expert at anything, I know excellent technique when I see and hear it.

Rag all you want dear Farkers, but if you don't play, don't comment.

And that idiot audience HAS to stop clapping along, especially on one and three.

As a hobbyist-guitarist, I want to thank you for an insult so succinct that I've been searching for to use on my own songwriting (in)abilities. Thank you!

/this guy isn't bad compared to today's crop of guitarists

Nice intro. How does the song go?

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-08-11 03:48:13 PM
so.... Robert Fripp said [or still says, i dunno] that "Fracture" was the hardest song to play that he ever wrote....
Listening to it, parts of it seem hard, other parts sound pretty moderately easy... [btw, i do believe it is just two or three or maybe four musical themes repeated one after another for 9 minutes... am i right?]

At first i thought that "Fracture" was boring, and repeatative... but then i listened to it more carefully... and it's actually pretty cool.... i especially like the buildup from about 7mins onward... almost rivals the build up in the middle-to-the-end of "Starless".

i read somewhere that he might've used crosspicking for/during "Fracture".... can anybody tell me what that is? wiki doesn't give a good def. Is it difficult?

/ best fripp buildups, imo:
1. Starless 2. Fracture 3. Talking Drum 4. Easy Money

Third_Uncle_Eno: i read somewhere that he might've used crosspicking for/during "Fracture".... can anybody tell me what that is? wiki doesn't give a good def. Is it difficult?

Basically, Fripp doesn't believe in finger-picking. So he adopted an up-down strumming style to handle polyphony.

Very nice, seems like Candyrat is an awesome label for advanced fingerstyle artists.

I prefer Don Ross, a little more upbeat but they collaborate so- yay for us and them?

A much better summation than the copycat attacks above. I also kept waiting for him to go nuts, or just elsewhere. Thankfully, the Andy McKee link was provided above, and I got my slo-mo pwnage fix. Thanks, DesertShadowz!
