I think that's a cool idea. And I'd have a website where it would list all the past recipients and letters of appreciation. After 20 years that'd be cool to look back on.

So James Sham sets up a foundation to pay the cost of giving away one muffin per day. The diner controls who gets that muffin and under what circumstances, and also gets to use the gimmick for publicity. They figure the cost at $0.70 per day, or $255.50 per year. The publicity value of that one article alone - and, of course, its posting to Fark - has got to be way more than that.

That was a very nice gift James Sham and his donors gave to the Empire Grill. I hope they picked up his tab for the meal.

I'm not much of a muffin fan (unless there's bacon involved), so I'm not getting a kick out of these replies.

The muffin man is seated at the table in the laboratory of the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen... reaching for an over-sized chrome spoon he gathers an intimate quantity of dried muffin remnants and, brushing his scapular aside, proceeds to dump these inside of his shirt...

He turns to us and speaks:
"Some people like cupcakes better. I, for one, care less for them!"

" put the money in a five-year (certificate of deposit) "

You can't touch the money for five years, great plan.

ak4799mm: He didn't factor in inflation...perpetuity my arse.

Well, you need to get interest at around 3% above inflation to maintain the fund, which does seem a little far fetched on 9k when you have 5% inflation. I guess you can average out fluctuations though as long as the fund doesn't run down too much.

Look at it this way though - compared to Zimbabwe, doing this in Maine will be a breeze.

(And if I'd read the article more carefully I'd have realised that the interest is 3.2%, which most definitely doesn't cover inflation)
