I have GOT to go to bed. I read that headline as "Rock blasts Toronto over propane despots."

You know what's worse than huge propane explosions in populated areas? Those annoying graphic ads that float around in front of news stories.

Just jumped over from the TF thread, and just saw the YouTube vid. 1:50 is just ... well ... holy farking shiat! Anyone in Toronto, how far away are you if you were able to hear, feel, see, it? The video conveys a lot, but still, first-hand accounts welcome.

Just RTFA, no mention of the cause. I'm hoping it's something that leads to a Darwin Award. I know that at present there are no reports of injuries or deaths, but that can change. An investigation could point to a couple of dead and charred bodies and a report destined full of Darwin.

I wonder at what distance is that video shot? The explosion at 1.50 seems absolutely massive

The delay between the explosion and hearing the blast is about nine seconds so I'd say about 1.5 miles.

Any Toronto farkers live near there? I don't think anyone I know is... mostly further south on in various lame suburbs.

Well, the video was shot from about 3.5 km away...amazing.

HOLY FARKING SHIAT!
Thankfully I'm in the east end.
That's some crazy shiat indeed!!!!!!

CTV Newsnet is reporting that there are 250lb tanks there that exploded. The area is locked down for a 7 alarm blaze.

Efferus X 2008-08-10 06:04:25 AM
Ah, so that's what that was. I was driving home from Scarborough towards North York about two hours ago when I noticed a giant fireball forming and cloud of smoke further down along the 401. I decided to exit off at Kennedy before I investigated any further. It seemed too close to the highway for comfort.

INTENSE! \m/

/I'm assuming that luckily no one was hurt?

Haha no kidding. The only thing I've ever seen that bright at night was a night shuttle launch.

I bet a lot of Torontoans are looking for fresh trousers right about now, I know I'd be.

Mother of God, that was one helluva monster blast. Betcha no one within a half mile has intact windows or unsoiled underwear.

I hope the casualty count stays as low as possible.

I'm around Dundas/Jane area, was awake at 4am and all the closed doors in the house made that sound of another door being opened and sucking them closed in their frame. Happened twice in a row... was wondering what the hell that was.

Klund: I wonder at what distance is that video shot?

According to the YouTube comments from the guy who posted the video, it was taken from Sentinel (btwn Jane and Keele) & Finch. That puts the explosions just under 4 km (2.5 miles) away.

That is INSANE.

Are any news stations covering this yet? It's 6 am Toronto time... they should have been awake for a few hours.

Of course, the CBC appears to have moved their entire staff to China for the Olympics.

i wonder what that place looks like now.
i picture a field full of blown-over tombstones

Majupra 2008-08-10 06:12:37 AM
Looks like it was at least burning for a while before the explosions and i'm sure everyone in that residential area knows they live near a propane refinery.

I farking hope anyways...

Oddest thing is none of the local news channels are covering this. It's all bullshiat sunday morning fitness shows and infomercials. I'd even take Ann Rohmer's tanned hide leather face at this point just to hear an update.

That second video is pretty crazy. You can see the shockwave from the explosion.

The guys comments are pretty awesome too. I'd definitely have a few choice words too if I were that close...

its sounds like they have some info on their tv stations...but the web guys are asleep.

(really, cbc/ctv/cp24/etc, you don't have ANYONE anywhere near to get some pics or video? Fark has more info than any other news site it seems..)

CNN, nada. Fox News, less. When is my job getting satellite, I need more channels, dammit!

I wonder how much Bombardier and the Downsview airport is affected, that's only a block or so over from the refinery. Do they actually assemble the planes right there?

klparrot 2008-08-10 06:16:17 AM
nnobodyman: the cloverfield monster is not impressed

The video gave me memories of Cloverfield, too.

Quick question to anyone who saw/heard/felt this. What were your first thoughts? Just a big fiery accident, or some sort of terrorism? Or Cloverfield monster? I'm hoping we're far enough past 9/11 that terrorism isn't everyone's first guess anymore.

I'm exactly 5 km south of there--3 miles for you non-metric farkers.

At first I thought it was thunder, because it rattled my windows. But then it sounded like someone dropping heavy stuff into an empty dumpster. When we looked outside, the explosions looked like that scene from Das Boot where the warship is exploding, but without the screaming British sailors.

You can still see the fire going now.

random97 2008-08-10 06:16:49 AM
The only news channel that's even mentioned it is CTV Newsnet.
And they just skimmed over it. Either it's over and not that important or they're so far behind that they don't even have footage or a reporter on site.

They're all over the olympics though. BOOOOORRING!!!!
