DO NOT WANT a phone call about this

DarthBrooks [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 08:16:11 PM
Is it 3 am yet?

steevmit 2008-08-09 08:17:44 PM
The United Sates, Britain and NATO on Friday called for a cease-fire.

Some pretty intelligent journalists they have at CNN.

AnkhX10.0 [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 08:18:54 PM
No, it's 4:32 am. We're WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY past the phone call.

HenryFnord [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 08:19:42 PM
jesus christ on a pogo stick. someone tell me these are battlefield ballistic missiles and not IRBMs.

DarthBrooks [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 08:24:00 PM
AnkhX10.0: No, it's 4:32 am. We're WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY past the phone call.

Not in Hawaii.

Someone better contact President Obama so he can stop this.

2wolves 2008-08-09 08:27:14 PM
How's Mr. Putin's soul these days Mr. Pretzeldent?

I thought it was 5 minutes to midnight.

HenryFnord [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 08:30:08 PM
Ok, so the stories don't say, but the pictures appear to be RM-70s, so at least it's still a conventional war and IRBMs haven't been deployed yet.

Yep... there's been plenty of gunfire and air to ground bombing.

Meanwhile, Fox, CNN, and MSNBC are full-tilt on who John Edwards' girlfriend's baby's father is.

As they say in Austin, Kerry Awn.

slobarnuts 2008-08-09 08:38:06 PM
Bill: "How can we make this article sound scarier?"
Steve: "add the word ballistic in front of the word missiles"
Bill: "Brilliant!"

HenryFnord [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 08:43:00 PM
Well no there is a distinction for ballistic missiles in that they're not wire guided or under active guidance. Ballistic just means that they're in free flight, like a large pointed brick, toward the end of their travels and that they travel in an ellipse as opposed to a (near) straight line. Unfortunately there are two general classes of skirmish ballistics, battlefield ballistics and IRBMs (intermediate range ballistic missiles). IRBMs are almost exclusively nuclear, chemical or biological warhead.

Nabb1 [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 08:47:13 PM
This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we will be lucky to live through it.

/hope i'm joking

HenryFnord [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 08:53:27 PM
I will live in Georgia. And I will marry a round Georgian woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle."

JPJ007 [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 08:54:11 PM
HenryFnord: IRBMs are almost exclusively nuclear, chemical or biological warhead.

I'm pretty sure we'd know if Russia used nuke, chem, or bio weapons on Georgia. It's kinda hard to cover that up.

HenryFnord [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 08:55:45 PM
It's kinda hard to cover that up.

I distrust the news services almost as much as I distrust the government. I pictured a scenario where the news services pointed back and said "look, we said ballistic missiles".

Great movie! Too bad Georgia != Montana

HenryFnord [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 09:01:37 PM
meh I had to adapt it to the circumstances.

HenryFnord [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 09:02:27 PM
besides, Nabb started it.

Tr0mBoNe [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 09:06:56 PM

Gotta make it count.

They picked the perfect time to do this... all the news agencies are triple split now... local, Olympics, and Russian news.

HenryFnord [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 09:13:08 PM
Here is an example of the SS-21 "Scarab". An intermediate range ballistic missile that can also carry a nuclear warhead in place of HE if required. It is believed these were used by the Russians in Grozny.

Ain't that some sh*t.

Lumoclear 2008-08-09 09:18:32 PM
"far disproportionate"

Just how do they measure the proportionality of an attack with missiles?

Russian troops in the area outnumber the locals by 10:1.

Wombatron 2008-08-09 09:22:14 PM
Dear Georgia:

Despite conventional wisdom, the South will not rise again.

Thanks,
Russia

Hoarf 2008-08-09 09:22:24 PM
Well, ya gotta contain the outbreak of Solanum somehow.

/off to sharpen my Lobo, see you after the war.

Is it time to shiat enough bricks to build a fallout shelter, yet?

Antimatter 2008-08-09 09:23:18 PM
The US telling someone else something is disproportionate?

LOL,

This from the nation that sent how many hundreds of thousands of troops to iraq, and killed how many tens of thousands of people?

The nation that sent how many to Vietnam?

Seriously, we have little right to say anything about proportionate responses.

Russia should end this, but I don't know if they are going to accept anything but a victory.

orbitalfreak 2008-08-09 09:23:39 PM
The eastern world, it is exploding.

Incetardis 2008-08-09 09:24:59 PM
Of course it's disproportionate. That ensure success with minimal casualties. Powell knew this and used it to great effect the first go 'round.

Came for the douchebag hipsters who would find a way to blame the US.

I was not disappointed.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 09:26:55 PM
What did Stalin ever do to anyone?

vossiewulf [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 09:26:56 PM
Yeah, I'd say it's appropriate to start talking about "Ivan" again. Sigh.

We're gonna party like it's 1962!

Any armchair strategists want to explain why you'd use battlefield ballistic missiles rather than a Bear bomber or Su 34?

Came for the neocon douchebags who think this is 1970 and the Soviet Union still exists.

I was not disappointed.

krispos42 2008-08-09 09:28:14 PM
But, wait, John Edwards' affair and the Beijing Olympics are sooooooo much more important!

God, I love the corporate media. Keeping the massed distracted since Reagan.

There were a couple of years in the early 90's when the Russians were a joke. They've spent the last 15 years rearming for war. They're not done yet.

/expands fallout shelter

The Georgians have already shot down a couple migs, so the bears don't stand much of a chance.

As a guy whose childhood was firmly placed amidst Soviet nuclear fears and aggressions and Regan's gesturing and posturing. I say ain't nostalgia fun? It's like the 1980's all over again!

I'll be drinking New Coke and watching the A-Team in no time.

Propaganda by any other name would still not smell at all because that's not the American Way.

They don't endanger aircrews? Or did you miss the reports of downed Russian aircraft.

Also, how is that any different than our use of cruise missiles?

hansolo 2008-08-09 09:32:38 PM
Disappropriate?

What did we do in Iraq? Use slingshots?
