Rest in peace you crazy hippy.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

We miss ya, Jerry.

jerry, man, we really need you!

Nothing says "Baby Boomer" like the Jerry Garcia signature tirs. "We're corporate sellouts but we're also still wild hippies. And don't do drugs, kids. That's our thing."

I was finally grateful!

Got to see them with Dylan on the Alone and Together tour back in the late 80s. I never was a fan of the Dead and their set meandered on WAY too long for me. (the drum solo alone was an agonizing 30 minutes of wanking)

But when they came out to back up Dylan, everything changed. Garcia played slide guitar on Knockin on Heaven's door. It was so beautiful... it still haunts me. And Highway 61 Revisited was so sublime it defied words. I stood, danced and reveled in great performances of amazing song after song.

After that, I respected all involved. And I was grateful to have finally seen both acts. Dylan is the farkin man.

The Dead are dead; get over it.

The Jerry Garcia Band's stuff is way better than the Dead's stuff;
why is that?

(BTW I saw TGD four times, so Im not a hater; I just see them
for what they are: a bunch of overrated noodlers)

AND I think Jerry killed himself. Yep, I said it. When you look at
all his health problems and his lack of dealing with them all he
did was commit suicide.

Does anyone have a you tube video of Bobby and Mickey performing at Bohemian Grove?

my FIL is a bohemian. They're generally pretty "no photos please."

As much as I like the dead, their second sets usually make me lose interest. First sets generally are a little more 'poppy' and lack the drug induced noodling.

Phil and Friends is a fun show to go see though. Especially if Warren is playing with them.

Truthfully my first real encounter with the Grateful Dead came playing their songs on Rock Band (Franklin's Tower, China Cat Sunflower, Casey Jones, Truckin', Sugar Magnolia, I Need a Miracle). They're awesome. Where should someone looking to get into them start?

Musicology101 [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 11:45:12 PM
Start with "American Beauty". Then "Live Dead". Then you'll find your own path through it all.

ahhh god I love that song. Thanks, Jerry

It's not anywhere near the same REO, I'm telling you. I saw the Other Ones & Hot Tuna a while afterward and it wasn't quite 'there'.

I still can't forget all of those hippies shedding tears that day. I got sick of it pretty quick. Quit cryin', move on.

wow - I had no idea about the Rock Band tunes, but I'd say start with 5/8/77 work your way back and later.

TOO may not quite cut it, but Jorma has never had an off night.

I had the same feeling about a year ago when I saw Phil Lesh at the Fillmore in Denver. A bunch of people in tie-dye pretending Phil doesn't sound like shiat. I had to leave between sets.

I always like seeing Ratdog. It's all Bobby's band, and usually has them tuned up hot. Plus, it's Red Rocks. I'll probably leave halfway through the Allmans. Warren's great, but I'm still pissed Dickey was thrown out of the band.

I'm no math whiz, but some simple math says that if he died 13 years ago at 53, then he would have been ~38 in 1980. If the dude singing in this video is only 38... well... damn, that is 38 HAAAARRRRD years.

Right you are. Hard drugs and smoking will do that to you.

I'm surprised on one has made that really old, not funny joke, yet.

You mean, "What did the hippie say when the drugs wore off?"
This music sucks.

/sorry
//never liked TGD but they did write some great songs and Phil Lesh's contribution to making all bass players sound better is unappreciated.

I was at the last ever Grateful Dead show.

It sucked balls

The Grateful Dead archives on archive.org are very nice for browsing through history. Here follows some of my favorites; apologies for the terrible formatting. If it pastes in right, each line should appear as "[show highlights (IMO)] [link]".
