I'll take about 50 board feet if you got it... I need a new coffee table and my table saw is getting the shakes.

They could send it to some luthiers, or make walking sticks and sell them to folks.
Well, that is what they should do, imo.
I'd buy one.

You'd have to be barking mad not to install lightning conductors in the remaining three.

In reading this and the other stories, it was the wind & hail that took it down, not lightning.

8,000+ Americans died at Gettysburg, and it's a national battlefield park.

3,000+ Americans died in the World Trade Center, and it's a real estate project.

Well, with the 10X population growth, that 3000 is only like 300 in 1860 Americans.

Bob Taylor made some gorgeous guitars several years ago with wood from the "Liberty Tree" in Annapolis, MD. It's a beautiful instrument made from the wood when it also was damaged in a storm.

I believe Gibson has first dibs on presidentially significant wood.
That's not a Bill Clinton joke.

Don't leave out the 27,000 wounded (many of which would lose limbs or die later due to infections/disease) and the 11,000 missing and captured. Using only the KIA makes the total impact misleadingly less, which I assume was your purpose.

To be fair, real estate isn't nearly as expensive in Gettysburg. I'm all for a meaningful memorial, but carving a hole in the middle of a city doesn't do much to heal the city. We didn't wall off all of Pearl Harbor either.

As for the Witness Tree, if trees could talk, this would be a tragedy. A tree that old really isn't that old in tree terms though. Plant a new tree. Put the wood from the old tree to whatever best use you can find for it. I wonder if it would make a good baseball bat! Abner Doubleday fought in the war didn't he?

OK, this is too weird...

Today I was digging around in my closet, and came across a Tree Growing Kit I got as a gift a few years ago...seeds which are a direct descendant of this very tree.

You can still purchase the kits...check this out:
