We started out from Bern one sunny Augast morn
There was just the four of us against the Matterhorn
There was Albert the Australian and John the Irishman
Me and Bill from Britain, mad dogs in the sun

Matterhorn, Matterhorn
Men have tried and men have died to climb the Matterhorn
That mighty Matterhorn

Two miles up we lost John and the rations fell bellow
Al and Bill were lying beneath an avalanche of snow
Now here I am all alone and I know I cannot stop

Matterhorn, Matterhorn
Men have tried and men have died to climb the Matterhorn
That mighty Matterhorn

Now here I am a-dying upon the Matterhorn
Not a grave for me to lie in, not a thing to keep me warm
The Queen would surely knight me if I could get back down
But it's closer here to heaven that it is back to the ground

Matterhorn, Matterhorn
Men have tried and men have died to climb the Matterhorn
That mighty Matterhorn

Btw, for fans of the mountain or climbing in general, Edward Whymper's first ascent is an amazing story, retold in Fergus Flemings Killing Dragons. The Matterhorn is almost considered a bit of a tourist attraction these days, with fixed ropes and guides, but it's still a perilous place, alas.

Some will say they died doing what they loved. Well, I love caving, but if I died in a farking cave, I'd say, 'fark that shiate! that sucks!' No, they didn't die doing what they loved: they just farking died. They're not smiling about it in the afterlife. They're cussing.

I grew up in southern California and have visited Disneyland dozens of times. As a kid I always loved the Matterhorn and felt it was worth the wait in line. The company my brother works for supplied the steel for its construction. About ten years ago they got to tour the inside of the Matterhorn by walking along the catwalks. The guide showed them the huge fans that were placed to blow on the riders to give it the illusion the bobsleds were hauling ass. I feel like I was duped.

Yes dear; and so do all the ones that don't. just not frozen and crushed beneath thousands of cubic yards of snow and ice.

bravo. great movie. high five.

i've been to zermatt. i rode the gornergrat train up to roughly the same height as the matterhorn.
it was easy (while sipping beer) to look in any direction and see 100's of mountains - any one of which i couldn't have scaled 10% of without a cable car.

Loved this movie as a kid. Liked the book (Banner in the Sky) just as much. Wish they'd kept the scene with his father's ghost for the film...

It's a majestic peak when seen from Zermatt.

Gyrfalcon [TotalFark] 2008-08-09 11:57:27 PM
I don't know why this happens. They have signs all over the place saying not to unfasten your seatbelts, not to stand up, and that the ride will be stopped in the case of decapitation.

Every year some idiot has to unbuckle his seatbelt, stand up, and get decapitated. Then they sue Disneyland. I just don't understand. What more do they want?

We have some slide photos from there. Dad took some great shots...makes the mountain look pretty small when 6 year old me towers over it...

I was there just last year. Beautiful area. Unfortunately the Matterhorn itself was obscured by cloud cover.

/and then I found five dollars
