What a shock, they find out marriage isn't easy.

It would have been hilarious if they allowed same sex marriage but denied same sex divorce.

The couple, Theresa Ramirez and Adelita Guajardo, are among more than 100 same-sex couples who applied for a marriage license in the county since June.

Hmmm...if the divorce rate is only 1 out of 100, then the same sex marrage folks are WAAAAAAY ahead of the general population.

Actually, if the divorce rate is this low then preliminary evidence indicates that same sex marriage is more stable than 'regular' marriage.

To be fair though, we don't have enough of a data sample yet to draw any conclusions....but it is interesting enough to study.

In November, California voters will get a chance to decide for themselves whether these same-sex marriages are legal in California.

Wow! You mean that the relationship can lose its appeal when the "the world is trying to tear us apart!" thrill is gone?

Fortunately, polls show a majority of Californians are opposed to writing bigotry into the State Constitution.

Straight people never get divorced.

Then you should have nothing to worry about. In fact, proponents of same-sex marriage should welcome the opportunity to have the voters decide. If the voters approve of same-sex marriages, then same-sex marriages will have much more legitimacy than they have now. Marriages approved by the people have more legitimacy than marriages forced on the public by an activist judiciary.

Yeah once you run out of windmills to tilt at it's mostly dirty dishes, who took the last Midol and "God, you're fat".

Marriage isn't a sociopolitical tool.

It's a contract. Read the fine print.

All kidding aside, that is a very serious question. gender bias in divorce cases in this country tends to favor the woman (in some states more than others). With 'gay marrage', it would be impossible to rely on that bias and equitable distribution of assests would have to function under a new mechanism.

I'll bet this situation has divorce lawyers sweating bullets.

I believe I mentioned the small statistical sample issue previously. That said, within a decade we should have sufficent data to start identifying trends.

whammer 2008-08-09 05:29:13 PM
The only shocking bit was that in California, it takes six months to get a divorce.

In Phoenix, for no-fault divorces, they have a kiosk. You do your own filing, answer some questions, both sign the paper and drop them in a box and you're done.

Of course, this is for no-fault only. It's a community property State too, so if you have property to divide, or have kids, etc., you have to do it the long way.

I've always thought that not being allowed to marry was one of the advantages of being gay.

Here's the 1959 judicial decision in the initial trial of Mildred Loving. We'll consider anti-gay marriage arguments to be just as stupid as this argument in 50 years.

Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, Malay and red, and He placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with His arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that He separated the races shows that He did not intend for the races to mix.

Apparently, we never should have invented boats. It was against God's will.

I guess they found out why a lot of straight married couples look so pissed/older then they look/fat/insane.

/Not all marriages are like that, though
//Can't we all just agree that marriage is an old agreement between two families for the purpose of sharing wealth?
///And that homosexuality is forbidden because gay couples can't make children to continue this 'agreement'?

I had some bulldyke get in my face demanding to know how we would have Lilith Fair without lesbians one time. She seemed to think Lilith Fair was of any interest or importance to anyone outside the shrieking harpy lesbian demographic, and that by depriving the world of this wonderful artistic expression, I would be destroying the universe or something.
