Not sure where the Coltrane is you're referring to, and no offense to Al Martino, but it's not fathomable to me that this could constitute a raise, no matter the circumstances.

Probably that boring video of "Big Steps" or whatever from a few days ago. But yeah, this wasn't really a raise in any sense. It also doesn't really qualify as "technical", at least by the modern definition of the word.

I had a lesson at Pat Martino's house in South Philly back in '99 or so. I never took my axe out of the case. He played for two hours and explained his musical theories to me. The way he thinks about music is so unusual, I was discombobulated for weeks afterwards. I thought and thought about his ideas for about 10 hours a day, and never could wrap my head around 1/10th of them. The guy is a real mad genius, but also an amazingly sweet and gentle human being. A musical gift from God, in my opinion.

I take it "jesus" is the new "this"?

I was privileged to see him perform a few years ago, along with the incredible Joey DeFrancesco on the Hammond B-3. What an amazing group of musicians, and the music was uniformly brilliant.

Pat's one of my all-time favorite jazz guitarists. I met him after the show, and he was also an extremely nice guy.

Another thing: Years ago he nearly died of a brain tumor. He had surgery to remove it, and it also wiped out his knowledge of guitar. He had to start from scratch, relearning the guitar and using his old CDs as learning aids.

Only a few guitarists can master the instrument as well as he did ONCE. Let alone twice. Pretty incredible.

Al Martino? Big Steps? FFS, guys.

As for whether it's a "raise", it's a nonsense comparison. Both are legends, rightfully so. And Martino is as technical as it gets - yes, even by "today's standards". (Hint: speed isn't the only thing that makes one "technical".) There isn't a serious jazz guitarist anywhere who wouldn't put Martino in his top five.
