There's a right way and a wrong way to protest, and trashing your hotel rooms is definitely the wrong way.

Sometimes I want to run around and force people to read 'fear and loathing in las vegas' until they really UNDERSTAND what H.S. Thompson was talking about.

When you say something unpopular in America, other people are free to call you a doofus, and express their opinions.

When you do so in a place without any tradition of free speech, you need to be aware, beforehand, that the government and/or powers-that-be feel free to beat you to within an inch of your life, and maybe an inch on the other side of the line.

I don't agree with what this guy did, but he clearly knew what he was getting into, and it took guts to do that. And even if he gets out of this relatively unscathed, he is sure to be barred from WalMart for life.

In cantonese it would be roughly translated as "thorough unrequested and painful search in orifices".

I don't know about your second statement, but I completely agree with the first.

When I was watching the opening ceremony, I was blown away by the beauty of it all, and how hard they must have worked at it. It was a mighty spectacle, but I kept thinking, how much MONEY did they put into this. How much was diverted from causes that their people really need addressed just so they could look good on the world stage?

How much does an LCD screen of such extra-ordinary magnitude cost?

I can understand what he is for. His way of doing it, no. This guy went to another country and caused damage to private property. During the time the country had the most effort put into security & ruining the whole open border for foreign visitors(well as open as china has ever been). He knew the results of his actions and what to expect. Now he is wasting Hotel staff time, the people who reserved it after him now will need to be moved to another room. The amount of police that have to look for this asshat instead of protecting people will be changed.

I hope he enjoys prison, because they will most likely "lose" his papers showing who he is for years.

zerkalo: What's the chinese word for full airport body cavity search?

I don't think the cavity search will be at the airport.

Every airport in China, every cop in China, and every boarder guard in China probably already as orders to be on the look out for him. I don't think he's going to be getting out of the country any time soon.

When you travel to other countries, there are things you have to consider, First, free speech isn't world wide. China is one of those locations that doesn't have free speech. Second, vandalizing a hotel room is NEVER legal (and jacking off and cumming onto the wall just before checking out, while might not be legal, isn't nice. Especially when it's a bed and breakfast being ran out of some poor sap's home). And finally, if you're an American, it doesn't matter if your politics swings left or right, just being an America is enough for people not to like you in other countries. If you have a problem with that, learn to fake a british accent before you travel.

In other words, when traveling, don't do anything to stand out or piss anyone off.

Not sure how I feel about this. He is fighting for the people of China, but by destroying property? I guess Jesus did do the same thing overturning the money changing tables at the temple of Jerusalem. But still...

Oh, and Exodus 8:1:

And the LORD spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

In China today young people when shown the famous "tank man" photo don't know what it is. Tiananmen Square and a man standing in front of tanks means zip, zero, nada. The suppression of media and history is total. Whatever the prof is hoping to achieve, will achieve NOTHING inside China. Idiot!

So, tagging a hotel in Beijing WITH ENGLISH SLOGANS...

I think this guy needs a few weeks of harsh lessons on cultural awareness.

Need to drop him off in one of those really xenophobic Russian communities that doesn't even show up on a map.

Drop him off in Riyadh wrapped in bacon.

Hmmm, I'm not doing too well on the whole "places to drop the culturally clueless"

I'm not opposed to the tagging, but the vanity of both doing it in english and uploading it to YouTube while in country earn some wrath.

THISing that last sentence, but a few Chinese remember us Brits (yes it was me) were involved during the Opium Wars, using the product that we grew in India. I don't think I remember any of the Chinese people I met distinguishing me apart from my Irish, American, Australian or English friends. They either liked foreigners (or Laowai, meaning 'person from another country') or they didn't trust us. A smile, handshake or nod and they were put at ease pretty quickly.

As to this guy, I'm sure a lot of the locals won't hear of this story but if they do they'll probably find it amusing and confusing. There'll be a few nationalists who will take offence but only until they find something else to be offended by.

What he did (destruction of private property) is illegal in The United States as well, He's not going to get too much symphony from the State Department.
