Looks like another pundit book. If his interview is any indication of his wit or intelligence, expect it to do about as well as Pelosi's "book".

I missed a thread a bit ago that ended up being about how the Republican party was about to come apart at the seams, and basically disintegrate. A lot of people were vehemently for the idea...

I'd rather see them become rational is all. I'm tired of negative attacks, and appeals to emotions, and faith-based governance. I'd rather see issues based on sound philosophical principles, and programs that work judged on hard numbers, and actual conservative values rather than the corporatism and religious values that seem to guide the party nowadays.

I'm happy to talk with conservatives that can express their values, rather than expressing blind loyalty, responding with attacks, and the good old "It's just WRONG!" argument.

I still don't want to see them in power (though I'd be less scared of them if the above changes came about), but I definitely want an intelligent 'Loyal Opposition'.

If people could blame our loss in Vietnam and the shiatty 70s economy on the Left, can't we blame our soaring debt, foreign policy debacles and shiatty economy on the Right?

Conservatives are nice people. The GOP sucks and is corrupt.

First of all, there are way too many non-fiction politics books being published today, and I would know, because I'm a sucker for that genre.

Second, I'm a liberal and I can't even visit that site anymore. I'm tired of being bashed because I don't used words like "republathug" or "chimpy-in-chief". I might agree with their ideology, but not their disposition.

I think you need to specify what you mean by "conservative". John Dean and Tom Delay are not the same type of conservative. Actually, what am I saying? That's not your job, that's their job.

Except that it was the Right in power from 1968 to 1978. So the loss in vietnam and shiatty 70s economy was their fault too, but when people think back all they remember is Carter, high gas prices, and hippies.

So, in 20 years, we'll look back on the 2000s we'll remember Obama, high gas prices, and yuppies.

Round and round we go...

The title of the article, especially on sites like that, tends to be meaningless. I'll give you the other part, obviously; stupid me taking their transcript at face value.

Arnold T Pants: How can you write a book about conservatives when you don't even know what a conservative is? Conservative does not mean Republican, dumbass.

Considering that self-identifying "conservatives" have spent the last eight years (at least) trying to redefine "conservative" to mean "whatever the GOP says," well, you almost can't blame the guy.

Sound-bite aside: the premise of the book is a sound one.

The GOP, consistently, have played "get your foot in the door" for the last couple of decades. Tactics the use sound like the MPFC Spanish Inquisition... amongst our weaponry are fear, surprise, everyone using the same negative words over and over, and an almost fanatical devotion to The 700 Club.

But once their foot is in the door, those promises evaporate like a raindrop on a hot road in summer.

For example: Bush Cheney 2000 campaign promises.
(web archives)

---

George W. Bush "will also ensure that the federal government, which is the country's largest polluter, complies with all environmental laws" ... and now, it's goodbye from the world's biggest polluter.

"To restore confidence in government, [George W. Bush] will...attack pork-barrel spending", meet the biggest pork-barrel wasters of all time, your Republican-dominated Congress.

"The federal government is expected to run a surplus of nearly $5 trillion during the next ten years... As President, Governor Bush will pay the debt down to a historically low level". Or, as reality shows us, he won't do anything of the sort.

"Governor Bush believes that a strong, capable and modern military is the foundation of the peace we enjoy today and hope to extend for future generations." And in the background, he's trying to find an excuse to invade Iraq because they have oil, oil, OIL!!

---

And the funny thing is, McCain's policy promises follow the language from Bush's 2000 promises, tweaked to fit today's circumstances.

Circumstances brought about by Bush's broken promises, of course. But people have very short attention spans. They seem to think certain messages sound right because they ring true, somehow. When the truth is: they're the same promises made eight years ago and most people don't know how to search online to find them.

icy_one: That guy was absolutely terrible on Colbert. He's the first guest Colbert has had on where I actually felt LESS inclined to buy his book as the interview went on.

Yup.

It's really too bad. As I get older, I am seeing more and more the ideas I used to have about how the world works, as formed under the Reagan years, are fantasies.

What I have seen is that this whole 'smaller government', 'run the government like a business' trope is as much an exercise in faith as any religion, and has very little empirical evidence to support its effectiveness.

In fact, the last eight years have been a powerful argument against this fundamentalism, as we have seen an absolutely huge increase in corruption and waste, as the privatization of government functions hugely increases the opportunity for such malpractice.

Do I expect my comments to change anyone's views?

Not any more than I expect a archeopteryx fossil to change the mind of a creationist.

So I was sorely disappointed in the performance of this author. I agree with him wholeheartedly, but he couldn't even convince me.

When one party emphasizes torture advanced interrogation techniques, holding people without charging them, reduction of civil liberties, and fabricating evidence to start a war, calling them anything but "bad guys" is retarded. What, was the difference between the GI Joes and COBRA now just partisan?
