But the ad makes some dubious claims:
1) When it says that Obama voted "to raise taxes on people making just $42,000," that was on a non-binding budget resolution vote that didn't actually raise or lower taxes. From Factcheck.org: "The resolution does not contain a specific provision to raise tax rates, but rather assumes that most of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts expire as scheduled in 2011."

2) According to Obama's economic plan, he would raise taxes only on those making more than $250,000 per year, and would provide tax cuts to those making less than that. Factcheck.org: "Obama has stated repeatedly that his plan would increase taxes only for those making more than $250,000 per year."

John McCain is a liar.

Stopheles 2008-08-08 05:35:21 PM
The whole "celebrity" accusation from the McCain camp is a rather desparate attempt at gay-baiting, isn't it?

Lawnchair 2008-08-08 05:35:29 PM
Skleenar: assumes that most of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts expire as scheduled in 2011.

If the GOP actually wanted a tax cut in 2001 and 2003, why did they schedule them to expire? Oh, yeah, because otherwise the true level of "holy shiat" fiscal insanity would have be reflected in their budget projections.

And he is pissed that he isn't the one in the spotlight. What an ass.

THIS!!!

I don't make that much, therefore I don't care if the rich pay more taxes, it isn't me so I'm not concerned.

Still running on the elitist meme?

It'll never stick for the simple reason that Obama started deep in his own zone on the 20 yard line. He busted his ass to get where he is.

How many Daily Show appearances has McCain made? 13

Obama? 3

But Obama is the one in the spotlight.

It's kind of hard to bash the other guy for his "celebrity" when you've made your entire political career based on being a high profile POW 40 years ago.

"Life in the spotlight must be grand, but for the rest of us times are tough..."

This coming from a guy that has hosted Saturday Night Live and had a cameo in Wedding Crashers. John "Hollywood" McCain.

How dare we pay attention to someone who might be the next President of the United States. I mean, it's not like it's a position of any importance or relevance, right?

carpbrain 2008-08-08 05:39:45 PM
I think the Obama must be saving up all of these obvious McCain hypocrisies, storing them like chits, and he is going to dump them all on McCain's head, one after another, in a vast flood during the debates.

Doesn't matter. You repeat it often enough, it might as well be true.

Well, that and a few weeks before the actual election. How much has Obama really dipped into his war chest yet? McCain is throwing ads out left and right, and it's waaaaaaay to early.

Skleenar: John McCain is a liar.

You know I watch these ads and I realize that to stupid people they are rather effective. Simple themes, simple allegations. And they stick. Obama needs to realize that countering with nuance is what did in Kerry and it will do him in too.

He needs to say forcefully, clearly and unequivocally: John McCain is LYING about my tax plan. Since such strong language is rarely used, it will give the media something to jump on, and the layfolk a simple thought: "Obama clearly called McCain a liar. Is John McCain lying or not?" through which the facts can come out.

Skleenar 2008-08-08 05:48:26 PM
You know, for someone I used to like, then was very disappointed in, then felt non-committal towards...John McCain is really becoming someone I actively dislike.

With a very strong feeling of dislike.

Obama is a cagey motherfarker.
I begged him to swing back at Hillary...he didn't - just sat back and watched her rip herself to shreds.
I keep smacking myself in the face...screaming, "McSurge is a sitting duck...fish in a cracker...crumbling bouncing cookie balls!"
And he just sorta points: They're proud of their ignorance.
Better farkin' work. It sure ain't as satisfying as choking the bastids.

Opiate of the Lasses: He needs to say forcefully, clearly and unequivocally: John McCain is LYING about my tax plan.

From the article I linked above:

Says Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan in a a statement: "This ad is a lie, and it's part of the old, tired politics of a party in Washington that has run out of ideas and run out of steam. Even though a host of independent, nonpartisan organizations have said this attack isn't true, Senator McCain continues to lie about Senator Obama's plan to give 95% of all families a tax cut of $1,000, and not raise taxes for those making under $250,000 a single dime. The reason so many families are hurting today is because we've had eight years of failed Bush policies that Sen. McCain wants to continue for another four, and that's what Barack Obama will change as President."

Obama hasn't gone on the offensive yet, and that's one reason why I support him. Campaigns shouldn't be about reasons not to vote for the other guy, they should be about why to vote for me.

I figured by now mccain would start in on BS like wright.

Anyone who is going to base their vote on a tv ad is going to be freaked out about the wright thing. Not "he's popular!".

Then again...I'm still trying to figure out who in the hell could be undecided at this point. I'm guessing its the same people who need to read the menu at McDonalds.

I think there can be a balance struck. McCain can't be allowed to slide by with this stuff.

We should be the judge of that, not Obama. If Obama stay's off the offensive and wins, maybe he'll start a trend.

jcooli09: Obama hasn't gone on the offensive yet,

So what has Obama gone on then? Everything he says is full of fluff, but with little substance. Many Democrats seem to think that this one is in the bag, but if you want to know why Republicans think that stand a fighting chance of maintaining the White House, a change out of his empty suit might reflect why polls still show this race as a pretty close one.
