Just as I started reading this, "999,999" from The Slip came up on my iPod. I immediately turned the switch to sequential play.

As a fan that is going to see him/them later this month, I must say I haven't enjoyed anything they've released since he's went off drugs. Ghosts was ok, his other albums kind of suck donkey balls. IMO

He's 43, but still writes lyrics like a 17 year old goth boy who can't get a girl to touch his penis.

If you want to create your own NIN lyric, it's easy. Just fill stanzas with nothingness, empty, erase, etc. like so.

Peel away my layers of nothingness
I'm empty on the inside
There you'll find the void
Erase that part of me

Yes, but by being attractive and singing these lyrics in a fairly decent voice to a catchy tune, he will get many, many women to want to touch his penis.

And at this point he could sing about a rotten avocado and still do well.

Looks like you stopped listening to NIN since The Fragile.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Not so much really. He mostly stoped writing like after The Fragile, which was three albums ago. But you're spot on with his back catalogue.

Year Zero was definitely Trent's most consistent album since The Downward Spiral. The Fragile was good, but unfocused. W_T was under-rated, but not really worth a five year wait as it sounded like Fragile left-overs.

Is that what changed? The albums just don't seem as dense since the fragile. Yes, the themes are nicer instead of "emo emo death death", but he's lost that hyper-layered sound that obviously was way, way more work (notice the frequency of releases has also gone up).

And as working stiffs, I think we can all appreciate "Every Day Is Exactly The Same" way better than a 17-year-old could.

FileUnderCS 2008-08-08 02:16:29 PM
And nobody has yet mentioned the fact that Reznor has pretty much completely modeled himself after one Kevin Ogilvie, who is quite possibly the most badass performer in the known world?

/likes NIN but let's give credit where it's due

BornfromPain 2008-08-08 02:42:22 PM
I think since The Fragile he has slipped, the Ghosts was really good but no album has been as solid. The sound is weak, the layering is so shallow and hollow, it sounds like an 8th grader did it. Themes and sounds are not completed and sound rushed.

Trent needs to get the old gang back together and start writing quality beats again. He should of never let Charlie Clouser or Danny Lohner go, they provided a lot of solid sound.

I like how Reznor portrays himself as this bastion of hope for music when all it really is is some kind of back hand marketing scheme. First he says music should be for free, then that back fires, now he's giving us lucky customer's "options." Seems to me he bit the hand that fed him, and now he's crawling back; if only he could adhere to his own advice.

/He's still written some great songs
//It's just that I wish he'd get off his high horse and quit telling us how we should be consumers; no different than the music biz suits.

Yeah, call me when a "music biz suit" charges five bucks for two CDs worth of music, then gives away the entire next album for free. If Reznor was signed to a major label, Ghosts would never have been released. An instrumental album from him wouldn't be considered "commercially satisfactory". The Slip was recorded, mixed, and mastered in under a week. Chances are that were it presented to a label like Interscope, the "music biz suits" would have freaked the fark out and shelved it as not being "technically satisfactory".

And he's not forcing anyone to pay anything. The stuff one would pay for is the esoteric audiophile/collector stuff like vinyl, high-end audio, multitracks, etc. The people who like that are more than happy to pay for it. The "options" are just that. You can get the music, legally, for free. "Music biz suits" have never and will never do that.

No, the reason the production changed dramatically after the Fragile is the loss of Charlie Clouser, who's forte is an insane amount of layered noises. Clouser is a farking madman.

Trent's production is pristine, but it has never been the same without Charlie layering away to create that sound that D.S. and Fragile had.

I'll second this. Trent is meticulous and exacting in his production work and now you're seeing more of that. Charlie Clouser was the one who brought on the complex layering and depth. Just listen to Clouser's remixes of other artist's work... You'll hear the Clouser'esque depth that's lacking in recent NIN stuff. Also, I think Trent did well letting Keith Hillebrandt, Jim Thirlwell and Clint Mansell tinker with his stuff. Jam a little Alan Moulder, Flood, and even Mister -two-hours-of-humming-power-transformers-and-cats-scratching-screen-doors (Coil) and you've got the gods of production in one place.

/ Ok, invite Amon Tobin, Kevin Martin, Justin Broadrick (Techno animal) and the dorks from Plaid too.

and for those biatching about the production on the past few releases not being as "thick", I think you're missing the point. The past few releases have sounded a lot more rougher, but they also sounded a lot less overproduced and sound more created-on-the-spot. Subtract a few a tracks from Year Zero and it's easily as good as NIN at their/his best.

Agreed. I found With Teeth to be a lackluster, completely average record save for a few standout tracks.

Year Zero, on the other hand, was a masterpiece and might be the best work he's ever done. Ghosts and The Slip were both solid pieces of work, too.

I was on board with NIN very early on, but dropped off when The Downward Spiral exploded into popularity. I can't even listen to Closer anymore.

I think NIN is better now than "they've" ever been.
