Sad.

I liked them, a non-chalant '70s hair-metal throwback.

/gotta get back on the love train

i liked that CD, but they pretty much jacked all their good lines and riffs from great bands, so I'm not surprised

Kind of a shame. The album was great fun. They wore their influences on their sleeves but they still rocked.

Yeah, but Mike Patton shouldn't be talking anymore either. Tomahawk was a disgrace.

I met the lead singer at a bar called Gold Star after Lolla 06. They put on a great live show.

Yeah, but it was good fun.

I keep listening to the album thinking "where have I heard this before?"

Kinda like an amalgam of Soundgarden, Led Zep & Grand Funk Railroad.

They covered Zeppelin when I saw them at a smaller venue. It sounded great.

Yep. Saw them at the Metro, which was an awesome show and then at Lolla which was a fun show too.

El Chode: Tomahawk was a disgrace.

seemed like a pretty logical extension of where FNM was going with "album of the year". i wasn't blow away by any of it, but it is all very listenable.

'adult themes for voice' however....

bikerdiva: I love that bar.

I was pretty tanked by the time we got there. The lead singer walks in with what is I'm assuming his manager, and like 3 hot groupie chicks. The manager goes to the bar, orders a round for all of them, and whips out his platinum card or whatever. Bartender informs him it's cash only. So I stepped in and paid for it. Which turned out to be a lot of damn money. But I can say I bought the lead singer of Wolfmother a drink. I did get in a "You kicked ass today man!" To which he replied, "Thanks mate."

So I got that going for me. Which is nice.

Mike Patton is sort of a bastard child of music.

The rock scene doesn't want him now that he's gone all experimental.

The experimental scene doesn't want him because they feel he's making their brutally obscure music scene too trendy.

Glitchwerks: The rock scene doesn't want him now that he's gone all experimental.

what? hes ALWAYS been 'all experimental'. mr bungle started in 1985.

the singer was the only good thing about wolfmother, maybe he can get new guys that write decent music now.

"Mike Patton on Wolfmother"

What an asshole.
(highly talented and influential,asshole)

Would he rather be hearing Nickelback? Coldplay?

I love "retro" sounding music.
Vintage guitars and old tube amps sound awesome.
They sounded good then,
they sound good now.

Wolfmother are a bit watered down and corny but my hope for them is that they would help usher in better bands like Dead Meadow and Sons of Otis. Kinda like how Nirvana sorta exposed some to the Melvins and Jesus Lizard.

chopit 2008-08-07 12:29:19 PM
I like Wolfmother. Just getting into The Sword, too, which is more heavy metal rather than 70s stadium rock. Discovery of both of these spun off from my love of Clutch.

FeedTheCollapse 2008-08-07 12:34:12 PM
as much as I despise how a lot of the more mainstream bands seem to be content with being more or less cover bands*, I don't think I can really say anything bad about Wolfmother.

*don't get me wrong, every band has its influences and is only going to get but so far away from them, but it's a little depressing how many bands are perfectly content with being a knock-off.

craigdamage: Wolfmother are a bit watered down and corny but my hope for them is that they would help usher in better bands like Dead Meadow

I've heard one album by Dead Meadows (Shivering King something or other), it was pretty good, but I was wondering if there was a better starting point? Some was good, but some of it was a little on the repetitive side (not a bad thing, but the more psychedelic tracks stood out because, well, they were more different)

demanton [TotalFark] 2008-08-07 12:45:36 PM
The Sword would chuckle, but they are too busy rocking the frig out opening up for Clutch.

craigdamage 2008-08-07 12:55:59 PM
The first song on Dead Meadow "Howls from the Hills"
is called "Winding Down Streams" and it is f*cking epic.

Seriously.
Riffage that Kyuss would envy.

I think their first self-titled record is quite good.
"Sleepy Silver Door" and "Indian Bones" are stand outs.

Ironically, one of Dead Meadow's best tracks is the first song on their new album "Old Growth" but overall it is their most mainstream sounding record.

I didn't realize that. When I saw Clutch in Madison in April, they had Kamchatka opening for them. Pretty good stuff in any case.

WTF is "wolfmother?"

WTF kind of name is that? No wonder they broke up, they obviously tried hard to be cool.

maybe they'd still be around if they named themselves wolfbreath.

I met him at a venue I used to bartend at in Portland, Oregon when Peeping Tom played. Really really REALLY nice guy. So what if he's a elitist?

Nero Kalem 2008-08-07 02:24:17 PM
Mike Patton Sucks. I saw him with Fantomas in NYC a few years back, and it was the worst concert I've ever been to.

Most of what he did was shot off how clever he thought he was by showcasing his incredible ability to demonstrate a variety of noises. That's what I remember most about him: him being a smug, psuedo-talented hack.

Sword/Clutch Oct. 1 for me. Already seen Clutch once, I prefer The Sword more. Then Buckethead on Oct. 29.

And just to tie in with the thread, I prefer all three of these to Wolfmother.

Oh, and I saw Tomahawk open for Tool back in '02. They opened with "God Hates a Coward" and he did that sing-into-a-gas-mask deal, and it sounded great. Then the rest of the show was a bunch of noise and berating of the Little Rock fans.

/not from Little Rock

Agreed here... but I enjoyed Wolfmother's music. It's not exactly the most original thing out there, but it was catchy.

Love The Sword... Gods Of The Earth is one of my favorite albums of the year so far. And Clutch is... well, Clutch. They're phenomenal no matter what.

/One aside... if you enjoy Clutch, check out Five Horse Johnson. Their singer did backup vox and harmonica on the last Clutch album, and Clutch's drummer played on their last album. And they're from my hometown!

i saw wolfmother at the TLA in philly in 2006. rocking concert. shame that they're all done - bands like this never do squat when major portions of the lineup are replaced...

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-08-07 03:23:24 PM
I saw them live on one late night talk show... i think they did "woman" .... the song was ok but the performance itself was pretty bad.... like approaching ATILLA bad.
[horrible organ solo].

/ +1 for anyone who knows what the hell i'm talking about when i referenced ATILLA.
