Perhaps if I had been born in 1985 or something.

I remember Good Girls Don't from Chipmunk Punk.

labman [TotalFark] 2008-08-06 01:18:49 PM
I only made it through about 25 of them, but I knew quite a few of them and I wouldn't call some of them one hit wonders.

Most of them definitely were one hit wonders, however.

submitter: You won't recognise these artists or albums.

Come over here so I can smack you.

People who make these lists really have no clue what "one hit wonder" means.

Teambaylagoon [TotalFark] 2008-08-06 01:22:13 PM
So its a track listing of the Wedding Singer Soundtrack(s)?

OlafTheBent: *hums Good Girls Don't by The Knack* That album was awesome. I remember when it came out.

It's a power-pop classic. You can take "My Sharona" off it and I still would have liked it. Once the Nuke-the-Knack backlash kicked in though, they were farked.

Yeah, a lot of those aren't really one-hit wonders. Quarterflash has a couple other hits as well (Find Another Fool, Take Me To Heart) that got lots of airplay, before radio stations realized everyone thought they were uncool. Corey Hart, also. Devo, Madness, the Tubes, Thomas Dolby, a couple others had big followings.

I see that Weezer also covered Gary Numan's "other" hit, Are Friends Electric (YouTube as the B-side to Pork & Beans.

AmStatic1 [TotalFark] 2008-08-06 01:26:51 PM
A "One Hit Wonder" is a group that has only one song make it to the top 40.

I think most if not all of these qualify...

Bill_Wick's_Friend 2008-08-06 01:28:08 PM
Men Without Hats had other hits, just none that charted outside Canada or the UK.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood charted with "Relax", "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" and with "Two Tribes". "Two Tribes" went #1 in the UK.

Red Rider only had one international hit (though several Canadian charting hits) but Tom Cochrane isn't exactly a "one hit wonder".

Corey Hart had lots of US hits aside from "Sunglasses at Night". "Never Surrender" reached #3 on the Billboard charts.

I've got an autographed copy from when the band stayed at a hotel I was working night audit at. They were very impressed when I pulled out a copy of their second album as well. They actually thanked me for being the OTHER fan who bought it.

I didn't have the heart to tell them I had it only because it was part of a package deal that got me those two plus the first Runaways album for a non-notable copy of Led Zap IV [which I replaced from a bargain bin]. I was really only after the Runaways disc.

They use "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell and not Gloria Jones?

Don Johnson? Never heard of that boy... or his dog.

Rickenbacker 2008-08-06 03:08:00 PM
Can we stop including Devo on these lists? Kajagoogoo, there's a one hit wonder. One hit song...gone. Devo has entire body of work and fanbase outside of Top 40 radio.

BuckyFudge 2008-08-06 03:13:46 PM
I have that Quaterflash album on Vinyl. Not sure why.

Uzzah 2008-08-06 03:14:16 PM

I have all the albums from 5 and 46 on my iPod so...I really didn't get a kick out of that list. It's like they shuffle the same 50 names every year and come up with a more creative list title.

mdbuff12 2008-08-06 03:16:47 PM
I'm glad to see "Baby Come Back" on that list. That's the hold music playing when Homer calls 911 to report Maggie is missing from a Simpsons eons ago, still die laughing when I hear it.

Too bad there were no lawns to get off of in that flick, because I'm sure you'd be telling the kids to get off yours.

Yeah, I remember it too, even if I didn't see it when it first came out.

"Take Me On" (sic) by A-ha? braahhhvo

No "Stand and Deliver" by Adam and the Ants?

Turrible

quetzl jity 2008-08-06 03:29:36 PM
Devo?

I don't think you can include one of the most innovative bands of the 70's-80's, who is still touring today, as a one-hit wonder band.

FAIL.

Gary Numan, Devo and The Sugar Hill Gang?

Just because some people who dont know much about music have only heard one song does not make them one-hit wonders.

Thats like saying The Dead are one hit wonders after only hearing 'Casey Jones'.

I guess "one hint wonder" is a relative term. I'm guessing subby is either
-15 years old
-only listens to mtv
-doesn't understand other countries have musicians too

Ya alot were one hit wonders but I was expecting a list of songs you hear alot but never realize who sing them or what they're called.

craigdamage 2008-08-06 03:40:55 PM
I have recently realized something:

I AM SMARTER THAN EVERY SINGLE GODDAMNED LIST ON FARK

About a third of the artists listed here asserted their relevance far beyond just "one hit"

Devo,Dolby,Numan,Soft Cell,Frankie,Madness,The Tubes...etc.
Were all very well known for a period of time or so.

I am NOT claiming PROFOUND relevance necessarily but relevance in excess of just one hit single.(Devo and Gary Numan were highly influential)

Also, the Tubes were known for years for their outrageous stage shows.

'You won't recognize these artists or albums if you are under 30, but you'll know every one of their hit songs. With audio.'

FTFY

AmStatic1 [TotalFark] 2008-08-06 03:43:02 PM
dothemath: Thats like saying The Dead are one hit wonders after only hearing 'Casey Jones'.

Actually, "Touch of Gray" was their only top 40 hit, and that would classify them as "one hit wonders"

hitmanric 2008-08-06 03:44:07 PM
Just because some people who dont know much about music have only heard one song does not make them one-hit wonders.

No but having only one hit in the top 40 does.

no sex no drugs no wine no women no fun no sin no you no wonder it's dark

There are some real catchy tunes on there. Wonder how they get past the copyright issues.

quetzl jity: Devo?

But didn't Devo have only one song that broke the top 10 or 20? Defining it that way, they technically are a one-hit wonder.

TheAnvil 2008-08-06 03:52:13 PM
Great. That Michael Sembello cover just turned me gay.

AJordan: No "Stand and Deliver" by Adam and the Ants?

odd, when I see Adam and the Ants, i think of "Strip",or "Goody Two Shoes" before that one.

also, thank you, OyleSylck

Glitchwerks 2008-08-06 03:54:19 PM
Let's see, the guy behind Baltimora died, so it's tough to call him a one hit wonder. He never got another chance.

A-Ha have been around for years.

M/A/R/R/S was just an intentional one off by Colourbox. It was also the tune that signaled the true start of the DJ revolution in music. I put "Pump Up The Volume" on the same level as Cybotron's "Clear."

I think Frankie Goes To Hollywood also suffered a death, which ended the band prematurely.

Not sure what happened to Dream Academy, I really liked them.

so this has really nothing to do with this slideshow, but it's been driving me crazy for about a month. Does anyone remember a song (music video) from the mid 90s that was on MTV a lot, had something to do with sundown coming around and the video was a sorta western-themed thing?

/figured a one-hit wonder thread was the place to ask
