Brit-tard for Crowbar, different than a Prybar.

Honestly, HL is based in the US. Use the bloody US standard language for the items, at least in the damned headline.

I thought the reference to a "wrecking bar" in TFA was actually kind of funny.

Au contraire (sp?), the game is filled with cyrillic words. Lots of people have speculated it happens in Europe somewhere.

But they talk in American, and no one says wrecking bar in America. So I agree anyway.

Yeah, Black Mesa and all. That's a good point. Maybe the Combine invasion shifted all the continents and mushed the southwest with Europe? Or maybe it's just a mishmash of all kinds of different places.

As CJ said, HL is based in the southwestern US. HL2 takes place in eastern Europe (IIRC, the western portion of Russia, but I could be wrong).

Not to keep beating a dead horse here, but the first game is set in the southwestern US. There's even a nice hiking trail out around Black Mesa in the Superstition Mountains a short drive from here.

Yeah, HL2 was definitely Eastern Europe. I think the game had plenty of clues to figure that out.

Well, you know, there was that whole business of going to Xen, then stepping into the void at the end of the first game. Also, I believe the entire premise of the first game was that there was some sort of time/space weirdness going on due to the experiments at Black Mesa. I don't remember if they ever said what happened to Gordon between HL 1 & 2, or how he got on that train.

I thought G-Man simply teleported him there, the same way he teleported him out at the end of HL1. He makes references to people he works for needing Gordon's services, so I figured he just keeps Gordon "on ice", so to speak, by teleporting him to another dimension bt games.

Maybe I got this in HL2 EP2 and the other "expansion" games, but I'm pretty sure that's the story.

I apologize. I played HL2 (the original) on both PC and 360 and never picked up on that fact. So Wrecking Bar would be at least tangentally correct, since the UK is closer to Russia than the US, despite the 'origin' of the series.

Confabulat [TotalFark] 2008-08-05 05:02:34 PM
I thought the whole point of Freeman was that he is kept in statis by G-Man until needed, which is why the world is dramatically different between HL 1 & 2. Gordon is kept frozen until G-Man needs him.

In Gordon's world, he went immediately from HL1 to HL2 without pause.

That's basically what I was trying to say. But I thought G-Man worked for other people, as though Gordon's services were for sale to the highest bidder.

I've never heard a crowbard called a wreckingbar in the UK ever. I don't hang around builders though, and Russia is closer to America than the UK (Alaska, and whatever that part of Russia is called across the Bearing Straight)

They really should just ship it to CERN and address it to Gordon Freeman and see what happens. I'm sure at least some of the eggheads at CERN will get the reference.

What happened between HL 1 and HL 2 is usually called Deus ex machina (new window) which means that the G man or whoever his employer is held Gordon until he was needed and placed him where he was needed. It is pretty flimsy from a story stand point but makes the G man a very interesting character because of this strange power.

My brother used to work at an Lincoln Labs which is an MIT lab. One of the guys he worked with was a college intern named Gordan Freeman. Gordan used to get weird emails and letters and even once got a crowbar that he was supposed to sign and send back to the sender. Gordan had never played or heard of HL so he was naturally confused until someone explained it all to him.

Half Life 2 was boring as hell. I never could tell what the big deal was...the very beginning was cool, but it rapidly devolved into "Generic FPS #1001".

Now F.E.A.R.. That is a cool freaking game. Only game to ever legitimately scare the bejesus out of me.

His suit, along with all of his equipment, is taken by the G Man at the end of HL1. The G Man specifically says this, saying he is confiscating all his government property or something (though he lets you keep the crowbar, commenting that you've earned it, though you don't start with that in HL2). Early on in HL2 you are given a new suit.

Mrbogey 2008-08-05 06:11:36 PM
A wrecking or construction bar is actually a long neck crowbar if you want to get specific. It's use is for demolition as the higher leverage is handy. Gordon Freeman uses a regular crowbar though. Some people will say wrecking or prybar instead of crowbar because they think (incorrectly) that "crowbar" is a racist term.
