Were the VMAs anything other than MTV doing a circle jerk?

\Does MTV even play videos anymore?

Pop music died before Betamax did.

Because pop music was totally awesome 15 years ago when New Kids on the Block were awesome

And 15 years before that when David Cassidy was rocking people to sleep with his coolness.

Pop music was just as crappy when you listened to it, submitter

Pop music is great, or at least, pop music at its peak is great. There will always be a handful of great pop songs released and a shiat-ton of garbage. But, when pop music is great, it is truly great.

In other news, I officially feel old as I don't know any of those songs that were nominated.

Tthe new-ish Panic At The Disco CD is really good. A lot different from their first CD and a lot of Beatle influences.

Looking back at a best video winners list there have definitely been been a few I've enjoyed.

Neil Young This Note's For You - great artist, funny song, funnier video

Sinead O' Connor Nothing Compares To U - awesome Prince song sung beautifully, stripped down video was perfect

Jamiroquai Virtual Insanity - cool dance song and excellent use of some good, old-fashioned camera tricks

Yah. I don't how people call the band "emo" anymore. Sure the first album MIGHT be considered emo in the lyrical sense but I don't think it is. If you are emo listen to The Used. That's emo in my view.

I actually like Pretty. Odd. for being upbeat and having nice catchy riffs and lyrics. Sure it's not anything amazing but it's very pleasant on the ears.

Pop music has always had its ups and downs, peaks and troughs, hills and valleys.

At least it did until the big advertising marketers decreed, in their wisdom, that everything must sound the same.

Yeah, I don't care for the cover. I mean, it's cute and all, but the original is a tour de force. That's the type of song we're going to hear in 30 years and turn it up and annoy our kids.

I flipped over for two minutes last night to see exactly how out of touch I am with today's pop culture, and watched as a hip-hop dance troupe was introduced before they flopped through a shiatty dance routine. The name of this dance troupe?

ACDC!

They wore shirts that said ACDC (which are apparently for sale on the Net after a quick Google search) and the giant screen behind also them screamed ACDC.

Can someone please explain to me how the fark this is possible? So can I start a dance group tomorrow called the Beatles or the Rolling Stones?

I'm hoping that as I write this, Angus Young has already had these punks all killed.

I don't remember if I cried, when I read about his widowed bride.
But something touched me deep inside, when the music died.

I love the JoBros! I saw them at Pepsi Arena a few months ago, and then played "Burnin' Up", I was right in front of Kevin and it was kinda like he was singing to me! It was crazy! And when they played "When You Look Me In the Eyes", it was like the whole building levitated. It was magic. Pure magic.

There's a lot more JoHeads out there than you think.

Eh, I like them both. The cover has its own quality, but that may depend on what kind of music you like.

The best part about pop music is watching these one-hit sensations build themselves up to self-absorbed, pseudo-royalty pricks, only to be torn back down into pathetic, shallow wretches and C-listers not fit to play a redneck's wedding.

siva 2008-08-05 03:24:15 PM
What's odd is that pop music doesn't have to be popular these days... Or maybe it is popular and I really am that old.

Doc Strange 2008-08-05 03:35:32 PM
You forgot to mention Tokio Hotel. They're nominated for this "award" too.
They have officially surpassed REO Speedwagon, Jet, Limp Bizkit and Nickelback to officially become my least favorite band of all time.

MonkeyAngst 2008-08-05 03:38:50 PM
Wait, Britney Spears still makes music?

Honestly, I thought she'd given up on that.

mcongraff 2008-08-05 03:40:57 PM
I hate to say it, but the young teens are eating this music up like candy. Pop music's not dead, it's just not for grown ups anymore.

bthemonarch 2008-08-05 03:43:46 PM
Pop music is always dieing, cause pop music isn't anything specific. Pop music is simply a term for whatever is popular moment, and fads go quickly.

Though, the headline still made me laugh.

I tuned in and saw some studio conjured entity marketed as M.I.A. on mtv... I was disappointed to see that the performer wasn't going to do an encore of "Boredom Is The Reason".

Anybody else notice that there's a lot of this going on these days.

Actually that would be record label marketing people, who decided if someone else is doing it, they have to do the exact same thing.

It's funny looking at the list of winning videos and seeing Don Henley, thinking that at one time MTV saw nothing wrong with playing videos froms someone who could be the dad of a good part of their audience.

Seeing the name "David Byrne" in the article one sentence after "Panic at the Disco" causes much confusion.

The video has no special effects.
