(Idolator) Amusing Stone Temple Pilots tour going as well as predicted: Scott Weiland stumbles around and forgets his lyrics, breaks into a cappella rendition of "Redemption Song" and eventually falls backward into the drum kit (with video)   (idolator.com) divider line 66

Wow, drugs and rock-n-roll. Shocking.

Old Pilots, yes they rob I
Stole I from the SD clubs
Minutes after they offered
Me a bunch of drugs

But my veins were made strong
By the poke of the almighty
I go forward, intense degradation
Velvet Revolver Goodnight Cleveland Thank You

I'm fairly confident that if I was willing to wait until sometime around 3 in the morning for that video to load, I might have been able to watch it. But, alas, I lack the patience, so my life will just have to remain empty and unfulfilled for its absence.

I like STP okay, but Weiland's rock star antics are way out of proportion to the band's body of work/popularity.

Reminds me of a Mudhoney concert I attended in which the lead singer collapsed into a fetal position on stage and kept singing How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?

All alone, or in two
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down
Outside the wall
Some hand in hand
Some gather together in bands
The bleeding hearts and artists
Make their stand
And when they've given you there all
Some stagger and fall
After all, it's not easy
Banging your heart
Against some mad bugger's wall

Seemed appropriate, in my demented mind
/dude HAS to be crazy
//or too many drugs

That's funny. I saw STP at Virgin Fest in Calgary a few weeks ago, and he put on a hell of a show. He looked like a crack ho' but was dancing and rocking the stage. He even came over to the sound stage, a few yards from where i was standing to sing to us during Plush.

/My friends and I were betting when STP would come out because there was a good chance Weiland was strung out backstage.

The thing I found more fascinating is I remember saying how fake Cloverfield was when people broke out their camera phones and started taking pictures of the Statue of Liberty's head.
Towards the end of this video, you see people looking around and then as if on cue, start breaking out the cell phones.
/Dunno. Just thought that was funny.

You know, I hope they hold it together because I'm seeing them on the 23rd.

"Core" was the first real rock album I ever bought, and I never had the chance to see STP live before they broke up the first time. I really hope it's good.

I'm going to see STP at Virgin Music Fest in Baltimore this weekend. One of these days Scott Weiland is going to OD, and I need to hear them live before then.

Good luck Scott.

Nirvana, had some great songs, 'Unplugged' is one of the best of the 90's. Still, they are not my favorite band, my point was that Nirvana spawned this whole genre of flannel and eyeshadow wearing loser bands.

Oh, you might be interested to know that most singers sing about their feelings.

I had the same experience in Vegas back in June. Aside from the hour and twenty between the opening act and STP coming on, it was a pretty good show. He does look like death, but he was still able to perform.

I saw them in Milwaukee about a month ago. He said a few things in between songs, but we couldn't understand anything he was saying. Wasn't sure if it was him or just the acoustics.

A cappella covers of Bob Merley are de rigour when you're flubbing it on stage. Just ask Sinéad.

A good night, the best in a long time
A new friend turned me on to an old favorite
Nothing better than a dealer whos high
Be high, convince them to buy

Whats my drug of choice?
Well, what have you got?
I dont go broke
And I do it a lot

Seems so sick to the hypocrite norm
Running their boring drills
But we are an elite race of our own
The stoners, junkies, and freaks

Are you happy? I am, man.
Content and fully aware
Money, status, nothing to me
cause your life is empty and bare

You cant understand a users mind
But try, with your books and degrees
If you let yourself go and opened your mind
Ill bet youd be doing like me
And it aint so bad

Say, I do it a lot!
Say, I do it a lot!
Say, I do it a lot!

I understood him, it was an outdoor venue with a sick sound system. He may have just gotten more messed up as the tour progressed.

Nirvana didn't spawn the whole generation, but they did have the luck/smarts/timing to hook up with the right production. They're a product of their times, which made it easier to inspire a whole bunch of other bands feeling the same thing.

They're one of my favorites for whatever reason, but it's good to maintain some perspective.... Elvis didn't invent rock and definitely had influences, but that doesn't change his being a symbol.

No. No you don't. You do not need to hear them live before the schmuck dies. Look, these guys sucked the last time around and never accomplished anything except a masterful demonstration on how to ride the coattails. Now, 15 years later they need some more money and somehow convince people that getting totally drunk and forgetting the words to your own shiatty songs is worth the price of a ticket. By all means, enjoy.

darkjezter 2008-08-04 05:08:38 PM
Ditching Scott Weiland is the smartest decision Velvet Revolver ever made. Weiland's drug addiction, personal problems, and onstage behavior make him more of a liability than an asset. I'm friends with the lead singer of a band that once opened for Stone Temple Pilots, and my friend told me that everybody in STP was cool except for Weiland, who was a complete self-absorbed prick.

Cheeseweasel 2008-08-04 05:10:29 PM
That's funny...kinda reminds me of Alice in Chains. I saw them once as an opener at the height of their popularity, and Layne Staley was completely 'faced. The lead guitar was also pretty f-ed up...it was very obvious, and they really phoned it in.

No shocker Staley died, but that it took so long.

darch 2008-08-04 05:21:00 PM
You know, it's rock n' roll and being a bit f-ed up is part of the drill, I suppose. But when I purchase a (usually) overpriced concert ticket, I expect some return on my investment. Coming out over and hour late, farking the lyrics up, falling into the drumkit (and believe me, as a drummer, I understand that what Weiland did probably knocked Kretz' pedal off the kick hoop- NOT good for a drummer during a show) and generally being a douchebag, is a cheat.

How many chances is this dick going to get?

Saw STP when they opened for Megadeth in '92 or '93. I don't recall Scott being terribly wasted then, but I also don't recall them being very spectacular.

It's funny how, apparently, venues have given up trying to prevent audience members from cell-videoing shows. There are at least 4 people directly ahead of the person who taped this also taping it.

And yes, I know there's no longer "tape" involved.

That's all I can think of anytime I hear about the guy these days. Was he ever such a good singer to warrant all of this attention? I don't think so. STP had a few good original songs, but most of their output was forgettable. I don't know who Velvet Revolver is going to get to replace him, but just about anyone with a decent voice would be an improvement. He always seemed to me like he was just faking that whole thing. Slash & Duff & . . . Scott Weiland?

Bhasayate [TotalFark] 2008-08-04 07:01:37 PM
I was expecting a lot more fail, that wasn't bad at all. shiat, that's NOTHING. So the dude almost fell over. BIG farkING DEAL.

I wanted fire, explosions, you know, like what the Flaming Lips did on stage in the early days, bring a motorcycle on stage and set up the mic. Or boobies.

that vid was totally boring.

il Dottore 2008-08-04 08:03:09 PM
I was FOH cam op at a recent show and when I zoomed in on Scott's face he looked absolutely trashed. Mumbled stream of consciousness gibberish at the crowd, kept introducing the wrong songs, nearly fell off of the front of the stage (6' drop), smacked his head on the down-firing FOH array, tripped over his ego monitor and sang the rest of the song flat on his back until somebody (in roadie black) ran out and helped him back to his feet, and generally acted like he didn't have the faintest idea where he was. Spent a lot of time poncing about with his hands on his hips and doing The Vogue.

In other words, business as usual.
