I realise Japanese might be a little sensitive about it, but it's Indiana Jones, it's not meant to be realistic, it's meant to be entertaining. If it wasn't then complain about that, don't complain because he didn't die from getting nuked.

The latest installment in the popular 'Indiana Jones' movie series has puzzled some viewers and critics in Japan as it includes a segment showing a nuclear bomb test which they say could give young people the wrong impression about the dangers of radiation and the destructive power of nuclear weapons.

Good grief.

flucto: Ah yes, whereas the Japanese are all about prudence when it comes to their wars. Step one, "recruit" 10,000s of comfort women to keep moral high...

But does that mean that a Japanese movie which depicts someone with a prostitute should be subject to Chinese protests? No. This whole article is just silly.

I DNRTFA but am i safe in assuming that it was like.. one or perhaps maybe two people who've commented on it being a little "off"? It wouldn't be like the media to completely and utterly blow something out of the water.

RobertBruce: {Stuff}

Well, the story is fictional, yes, but they're complaining about a reference to an historical event which took place. If i wrote a fictional story referencing 9/11 that was entirely offensive and inappropriate i hardly think the "it's fiction, stupid!" flag would help much.

But the historical event they're referencing is a nuclear test, not one of the bombs dropped on Japan. Your analogy would be more apt if you said that, because of 9/11, any reference to skyscraper disasters - no matter how unrealistic - was off limits. It would be like saying "The Towering Inferno" is now offensive.

If that scene was offensive to anything, it was offensive to plausibility.

Uncorrect: But the historical event they're referencing is a nuclear test

Yeah. Key word "historical" too - what, are movies set in the 50's supposed to ignore the fact that at the TIME, yes, the US and the Soviets were testing willy-nilly and at least in the US[1], telling the people that really, anyone can survive the bomb in their basements because fallout just wasn't a big deal?

I suppose they can complain that "if you show nukes, you should show the real dangers," it would be a legitimate complaint but one alongside the "if you show violence in movies, you should always show the consequences and grieving families" or "if you show smoking, you should show the sickness" requests, which come up from time to time but are regularly laughed off. I.e, not a war thing.

Plus it's Indiana Jones. Not exactly known for realism...

[1] Probably in the USSR too but I don't read Russian, so haven't seen their version of such propaganda

itazurakko [TotalFark] 2008-08-04 10:05:02 AM
Plus I'd bet money that there's some chat somewhere in the US that says YES, "The Towering Inferno" is now offensive. Would it be taken seriously? No.

Same deal.

Haha, that graphic is brilliant. I've said many times that the Crystal Skull haters don't remember the original films as well as they think they do.

"You can't survive a nuclear explosion in a fridge! You can, however, use magic to pull a man's heart out of his chest without killing him."

Sure I can. You'll get over it, though.

Also, yeah yeah, blah blah, WWII Japan was so horrible. It was, no doubt about it. So what. Ignoring the debate about the first atomic (Saved lives? We had no timetable for a mainland invasion any sooner than 10 months), there is almost no valid reason for the second aside from proving to Stalin that we had more than one. That's a lot of dead civilians just to prove a point. In either case both the atomics and the fire-bombing of germany fit the profile of similar attacks on civilian production centers that the US had previously declared war crimes. It's good to be the winner.
