The best thing about Rage's set when I saw them for the first time was the palpable threat of an imminent riot.

Beck Bristow 2008-08-03 10:49:36 PM
them @ rock the bells sucked, because the crowd was 60% rage fans pissed that the other acts wouldn't get off the stage and let rage play.

Meh

I don't think that Zach has gotten it into his head that if he asks people to step back they're going to shout, "F*ck you, I won't do what you tell me!"

I don't know why. But this made me think of the best Onion Article of all time.

I guess the fans were calm like a bomb.

Bah, that's nothing compared to the mob scene at Mstislav Rostropovich's last concert at Carnegie Hall.

Have I been living under a rock or something? Until I read this I was pretty much 100% sure the RATM broke up years ago, and that Lollapalooza was over with years ago as well...

They recently reunited. And the Lollapalooza series was cut down to a set of shows in one city. So, no, you're sort of right.

Rage Against the Machine were joined at Lollapalooza by Chicago native rapper Lupe Fiasco

I LOLed.

It was quite funny. De La Rocha would say "brothers and sister, we everybody to take a few steps back so that the people up front don't get hurt, we're all in this together." Then launch into "Bullet in the Head"

I saw Rollins sing with Ice-T, and Jane's Addiction at the first agorarapobia-inducing event one in Detroit in '91 and saw Iggy at the one in Chicago last year so I am really getting a kick out of these replies.

/ended up driving near Grant Park yesterday to try and avoid construction/delay.... epic fail
//god damned Edens was packed, too
///didn't Henry write a book about all of this?

I was too broke to attend this show, but I did manage to see RATM at Alpine Valley in WI last summer. Probably the most intense show I've ever been to. I came out of that pit covered in mud and sore, and I'd do it again.

sanole11 2008-08-04 01:14:04 AM
yea, i was there (in the back) and it was pretty insane. he stopped the show a few times to try and get people to back up. i definitely left early to go watch wilco, though. one of the best decisions i made all weekend.

It's too bad they do that with scheduling. Just have the headliners one after the other, and if you need to go until 4 AM? So be it.

I'm sure Tom and Zach would love talk like that.

I was there for Iggy last year, it was amazing. And I'm not sure if Henry wrote about it but I've seen him do spoken word and mention it.

I was at Rock the Bells last year and I didn't sense much pissiness. It was funny tho, 90% white boys at a hip hop event. My friend and I were about 30 feet from the stage until they came on and the moshing opened up right on top of us so we stepped back a hundred feet.

And this is what happens when you get tens of thousands of knuckle-draggers in one place and give them beer and angsty music.

Wilco played a hella good set though. And, believe it or not, it appeared as though people were there to hear the music, not to bash eachothers skulls. Imagine that.

Yeah, they would rather be playing hackey sack and "jammin' to the groooooooves"

It's not for everyone, but for the most part being in a mosh pit is not about bashing each other's skulls. You do really get a nice certain kind of togetherness in a mosh pit. If someone falls down, you pick them up, dust 'em off, and throw them back in. You push, get pushed, run around in a circle, dance.

That's not to say that there aren't pits that I would be a part of. Some of the heavier metal bands and such, I wouldn't go NEAR that.

However, slam dancing is no more different an expression than skanking, toe tapping or any other form of movement expression when it comes to music.

Nothing quite like it really. Although I feel a bit too old for it now.

/Would go see Rage over Wilco

I've seen at least three Rage shows that I can remember off hand:
Lollapolooza 93, Nashville
Memphis 97 with U2
and another Nashville show @98

All, especially Lolla where potential riots.

would still love to see them again.

I, too, was over at Wilco, had a great view of the stage and tons of room around me. I'm in fact pretty glad Rage was playing against them, fewer people over there, better time.

Agreed. At Flogging Molly there were just some good peeps looking to have a good time. You don't need to try and hurt your mosh pit bretheren to enjoy yourself.

I was pretty close up front for the first 2 1/2 songs and was then on my way to safety for great fear of losing my life. The wave of so many panicked people was such an experience. Wouldn't change a thing- excellent show. It has to hurt Zach and co. to see people getting hurt right up front. Would be a bit of a buzzkill esp. since it goes against his beliefs. I think the inability to avoid such chaos from the energy they put out might be part of the reason we haven't seen them around lately. As soon as the sirens started at the beginning you could just feel this collective adrenaline rising and rising. Awesome, awesome set from an excellent weekend.

Now, painfully trying to acclimate myself to being back home :(

i had to choose, and i chose wilco ... they put on an amazing show and it was ripping. wilco's boring? what have you heard? just the VW commercial? it's classic rock n' roll and tweedy's widely regarded as an amazing songwriter. don't be silly.

I saw Rage at one of the Lollapalooza shows they did in '96. The crowd was nuts.

But the best part of the show was seeing big Confederate flags waved (show was in Tennessee) in front of Rage's faces. Right down front too. They didn't have the balls to say anything about it, either. The shocked look on Zach's face was classic. Wish I had taken a camera.

It pissed them off and they just played harder. Good times.

Whoa there. Just because we're discussing Wilco and RATM doesn't mean it's 1995. Wilco hasn't done anything even vaguely alt-country in over a decade.

Wilco sounds vaguely like Sonic Youth Version II right now, with some acoustic pop songs thrown in.

This. Summer Teeth was a pretty good album if you could get stomach the blatant "trying too hard to sound like the Beatles" sound. But after that the band just moved to Suckville and bought a condo.
