OK there Subby, settle down. We got it, you're voting for McCain's flip flops instead of Obama's. We don't need your google news search results for Obama flip flops three times an hour.

The potato doesn't need a glass of warm milk and a belly rub before its nap. Also, depending on the mold on the potato, you might be able to trip off of it ... so one could say it has more uses than some old, senile guy who won't just come out and call his opponent a nagger.

This is hardly a big flip flop. Refining positions on funding for programs is something you hope to see. Better someone who can change their mind, then someone who makes it up and refuses to change.

Agreed. If you get hit by a car because you didn't look both ways before you crossed, you're probably going to flip-flop and change your policy.

ninjakirby [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 07:38:53 PM
Bah. Thats the biggest policy problem I have with Obama. I can't understand his reasoning to deny NASA funding except that he's pandering to the vast percentage of people who don't understand NASA and think they don't deserve the money they do get, let alone the money they need.

Wow, a politician who lies? That's news. Change? Give me a break. The only change a pol wants is for more money and power. Whoever wins, you lose.

THIS. If America lose the high ground, others will take it. The measure of a great power will not be Aircraft Carriers or ICBMs in the future, it will be the ability to put things in orbit and beyond.

watch the Chinese, the Indians and the Brazilians start to launch stuff.

Sadly enough, Obama has pretty much proven himself to be a politician after all. But he is willing to compromise and that's a good sign.

However, One thing that Gorge W. can rightfully claim is that he never compromised his belief...even after he became unpopular. And like it or not, that takes a form of leadership.

I'm still going to vote for him.

MIguy [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 07:46:45 PM
You have no idea how funny it is to see the same names defending Obama as were in the other thread bashing McCain.

I don't get this whole flip-flop thing. Shouldn't a rational person be open to new opinions and facts and change his/her beliefs if they are found insufficient? With the Bush administration, we've seen the results of someone who is steadfast in their beliefs (dumb though they may be), and it isn't pretty.

All politicians suck rhetoric doesn't help decide which way to vote. Which candidate is trying to solve your problems, and which won't make them worse? Too apathetic to answer? Then you lose.

i am the infidel 2008-08-03 07:50:22 PM
I'm wondering why we are putting much money into going to Mars and back to the moon.

Get a manned heavy lifter that is a boatload cheaper than the shuttle. I love the space program and all of the spin offs more than most people but let's get that problem solved even if it is only a "band-aid" fix. Then think long term.

I don't mind paying taxes that support NASA. I just think they need to get their priorities straight.

bulldg4life [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 07:56:23 PM
He's going to break his leg trying to jump to the center of the political spectrum.

I didn't really have a problem with him delaying the Constellation program, because of what he said we should be focusing on. I didn't view it as a shutting down of NASA, but more of a slight adjustment of their schedule. I didn't like it very much, but it wasn't going to change my vote.

I know that he was getting hammered by many people that were using this as a giant single-issue to attack him on.

But, I'm quite sad to see him adding pandering flip-flop fuel to the fire.

I would've preferred him to leave the position alone instead of changing it (even though the change is something that I agree with).

Come on subby, how many FL votes would that really get him?

Obama is the male version of Oprah

DarthBrooks [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 08:05:57 PM
See what his position is after he leaves Florida.

"We cannot cede our leadership in space. That's why I will help close the gap and ensure that our space program doesn't suffer when the Shuttle goes out of service by working with Senator Bill Nelson to add at least one additional Space Shuttle flight beyond 2010; by supporting continued funding for NASA; by speeding the development of the Shuttle's successor; and by making sure that all those who work in the space industry in Florida do not lose their jobs when the Shuttle is retired - because we cannot afford to lose their expertise."

So he's supporting a Shuttle flight past 2010, when there will be only one launch pad, no defined Shuttle mission, and a change in how the pad refit is scheduled. And somehow this continuation of the Shuttle is going to help keep Florida jobs AND speed up the development of Constellation?

No worries: this "plan" is going to be forgotten as soon as Obama's plane leaves Florida airspace.

Given the anti-NASA sentiment I've seen, my guess is it would net him fewer, but maybe Florida is different due to proximity.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 08:10:44 PM
It's funny that when NASA comes up people always leap, pro or con, for the space program. Forgeting entirely what the first A in NASA stands for, aeronautics. NASA isn't just a space agency, they're also the agency in charge of a ton of aerodynamics and astmospheric research. Just as the Department of Energy oversees several physics labs, so too NASA oversees some truly awesome research programs related to aircraft of various types.

And thanks to Boeing eating up MD, and all the other aircraft company mergers that have happened, privately funded basic research in aerodynamics is barely being sustained. So if you're an engineer or aerodynamicist into basic research or even a bunch of applied research, and you either don't fancy an academic position or what you want to do is beyond what's done at academic institutions, NASA is about the only place to go for a job.

kaminariko [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 08:11:05 PM
If I'm correct, and I might not be, the final candidates for the office of POTUS get some highly classified briefings on policy and the state of Union, so to speak, that were previously withheld from them until the White House could see who the finalists were.

Some of that information may have triggered some policy changes for Obama because this is the first time he's been privy to that information. None of this is probably new to McCain, or if it is, his policy is going to remain steadfastly pandering to the only base he can count on...the same one Bush had.

Of cours that could all be BS, and I could be way off the mark.

more research into airplanes is not full funding.

Keeping on schedule to go to the moon and Mars would be full funding.

to each their own. I am against that delay. I don't care what koolaid is provided. Keep the momentum, keep it going, there is a whole commercial space industry starting, which is good for our country. If they are gonna wimp out and delay going to the Moon and Mars, then NASA will concentrate on Low Earth Orbit, and be a big competitor for US commercial space, screwing up that industry too, (and not even over-taxing it \yet!)

Oh I get it, compromising or changing a decision based on new information is flip-flopping. And Democrats, who have recently had a better track record of considering available information and making decisions based on such, are particularly egregious offenders.

----------------

After reading the article they link to..I am wondering...

He has said earlier that he would delay the constellation program and a return to the moon/mars. Is that the opposite of saying he would like to see increased funding?

The article that this blog links to does not mention increasing funding for the constellation program/NASA. It talks about re-focusing NASA's direction and improving several different areas (instead of just trips to Mars).

The headline and the blog are not supported by the article with the quotes.

Thanks for your interest. I'm leaning away from Barack mainly because of his space policy, although I was hoping that this change in policy would be more beneficial than it appears to be. their tax policy also seems like it would discourage business expansion, but that's another issue.

The space program is a major issue for me, so please excuse me for overposting or if it was insulting in any way, I just didn't see one more shuttle as a big deal, not like keeping full funding or increasing it. I hope I am wrong about their actual space policy plans, and would be happy to stand corrected. It would be nice to see some real details. (from both parties)
