Just read "Into Thin Air". Amazing story.

RIP to these people but they knew what they were getting into.

Gwendolyn [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 07:03:34 PM
284 people have reached the top and 77 have died doing so. 1 ourt of every 4 dies trying to get up there?

I think playing Russian Roulette has safer odds. (and not that stupid game show with Mark Wahlberg)

What I got from that book was many really do not know what they are getting into.

Don't want to die on an inhabitable, unforgiving mountain? Don't go there.

Same answer applies to all sorts of unnecessary high risk "adventures".

For an idea how tough K2 is, the first succesful expedition to reach the summit was in 1954. The second was 23 years later.

see? this is exactly what happens when people 'go out' and 'do shiat' on weekends instead of just sitting around getting baked, watching tv, and posting stupid shiat on www.fark.com

Is it harder than Everest or just not climbed as much because it's not the highest mountain in the world?

Read the book roughly a decade ago. It's great. Then I saw the movie based on the book. Completely missed what the book was about. For those that aren't in the know/are breastfed by Sean Penn, it's a firsthand account of the Everest disaster thirteen years ago, written by the same author as "Into the wild". now feel free to jump onto the bandwagon and say "I feel like I'm connected with and respect nature now more than ever."

My understanding is that K2 is much tougher and requires more climbing skills than Everest.

LeafyGreens 2008-08-03 08:13:37 PM
Clearly climbing needs to be banned as these people are a menace not only to themselves, but to residents of the mountain and the surrounding area.

ranchguy 2008-08-03 08:14:12 PM
WhyteRaven74-

but Fritz came within reach of the summit in 1939- WITHOUT O2.

now, 75% of people on 8000+ meter peaks are tourists, and Everest and K2 that percentage is 95%.

All hail Herman Buhl!

Oh and "optimal" weather conditions are very few and far between as well.

Then shouldn't this get the "Dumbass" tag instead? You know, like if I died in a bear hunting accident.

I'm just a lowly rock climber, but K2 is considered technically harder. More to the point, the weather is less predictable and the last exposed climb is longer than on Everest - in other words, during a summit attempt, you're further away (in time and distance) from a base camp where you can conceivably ride out a storm.

/Now a real mountaineer will undoubtedly come in and slap me around with an ice axe.

Hector Remarkable 2008-08-03 08:19:06 PM
FTFA: The bodies of the 11 may never be recovered, but rescuers and the mountaineers who made it down are certain the 11 are dead.

So there's no need at all to be afraid of ice zombies.

Olfin Bedwere 2008-08-03 08:19:25 PM
I wonder what mountain is in the picture on the CNN site. It sure isn't K2.

Agreed. 'Into thin Air' by Jon Krakauer is freakin' amazing! If you liked that book and mountaineering books in general, I'd also read 'Eiger Dreams' by Jon Krakauer and
'The Crystal Horizon: Everest-The First Solo Ascent' by Reinhold Messner.

Traditional, thankyouverymuch. Led a few routes when I lived in Yurp, let my skills degrade after moving across the pond, now picking it up again.
