That's totally not fair.

You can clearly see that Thor CackHammer VonMan-o-War or whoever that magnificent clown is, was crying on the inside.

shanrick: Rock is dead.

Probably.

Anyway, I dunno--maybe it's a good thing that the lead singer as we know it is going the way of the dodo. I mean, bands are more than their lead singers. There really are only a handful of bands whose members I can accurately name, but I know their lead singers, and that's sad. Music should be a collaboration, after all.

Just subgenre madness, that's all. On some days I want my early 70's, drug-addled, sound-of-the-world-coming-unglued Rolling Stones. On others I grab a book and fire up some Death Cab For Cutie. Either way, it's all rock and roll. Some is just more cocksure than others.

/yes, Virginia. The Stones *did* rock, at some point.

yeah looking at Thom Yorke and the Coldplay guy isn't really looking "rock" at all. Some sweeping survey of music. When was Coldplay rock? It is adult contemporary at best.

the dude should watch a dillinger escape plan show.. rewrite the article.

Sorry, been a non-meth using hetero for all of my life.
Sorry to burst your bubble, Chief, but Morrison and Jagger both smoked their fair share of poles in their day. You're probably a big Rob Halford fan, and may have enjoyed a song or two by Queen.

/Time for you to flip your "Freedom Rock" album over, and dust off that dream catcher in your living room.

As long as crazy women write long and overly interpretive articles about rock frontmen, absolutely nothing has changed.

Kali-Yuga 2008-08-04 08:05:17 AM
Well there are alot more female lead singers now also. Isn't the lead singer of every emo band female? Or do they just dress, sing and act like it or something?

Whoever wrote that article wouldn't be able to find a frontman if they went looking for them because they'd get their merkin rocked off by the sheer force of the music. See above.

Also, Tweedy is a frontman. Drug addled, punches fans on stage, can sing damn well, will take requests from fans, oh - and can play an instrument while singing.

xgnu 2008-08-04 09:39:15 AM
These men have no heart, no soul. This pseudo-intellectual indy rock stuff is just a facade for bland whiney crapola. It's for coffee shop, just switched majors again, 'cerebral' types who are just trying way to hard to look smart. It reeks of snobishness. The great music of the last decade is right where is should be. Living, breathing, and bleeding in underground clubs and free low fidelity demos.

Second. I'd comment, but I can't say it any better than Zappa did ...

"Most rock journalism is people who can't write, interviewing people who can't talk, for people who can't read."

You should be ashamed of the self-indulgent nonsense you just wrote. I won't stoop to trashing the generational icons you happen to laud, but if you are going to dismiss the touchstones of other eras, don't try to do it on "merit". It's bias you are selling, pure and simple. The men you insulted were cultural revolutionaries, regardless of your ability to step outside of your arbitrary perception.

I'm pretty happy we've got rid of the swaggering, drooling, mentally subnormal fark-haired macho-tranny coonts you got in 80s 'rock' music.

But inevitably they'll be around again, once retro nostalgia's gnawed the 80s to the bone otherwise and that crap is the only thing that's left.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-08-04 08:15:19 PM
I dunno... i'm kind of split between liking two camps, frontmen wise. [i like both camps, btw, but for different reasons]

1. the 70's 'real'/'cool'/'rock god' rock n' roll front men like
Mick Jaggar, Roger Daltry, Robert Plant, Bryan Ferry (wait, what? ... yeah i said it!), etc.

2. the Intellectual more artsy lead singer/frontment/songwriter type
like
David Byrne, David Bowie, Mark Knopfler, Peter Gabriel, Peter Hammill, Win Butler (Arcade Fire), Colin Meloy (Decemberists). etc.
