"Outside?" gasped Isaac Kim, who's about to start pre-pharmacy classes at the Silver Spring/Takoma Park campus. "Do they have the right to do that?"

You can trample on any right or freedom in this country, but you have to pretend you're doing it for some vaguely defined 'greater good' like 'the children' or 'healthly lifestyles'. Oh, and don't forget to portray even reasonable objections as fringe science wackjob extremists while you do it.

/here endth the lesson.

Ah, college campuses, the last bastions of freedom*.

*does not include the right to free speech, or smoking.

I smoked cigs for 26 years. Gave them up 99 days ago using the patch. Tobacco: it's a helluva drug and way more dangerous and addictive than many. I don't see a problem with this.

Why do you believe that it is the responsibility of our "leaders" to evaluate risk for our personal decisions and to then decide whether or not we should be permitted to take such a risk?

My university banned smoking on campus 3 years ago. The story (new window)

I smoke, but I support the move. We're a distinct minority and it's my choice to pollute my body.

CtrlAltDelete [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 06:07:27 PM
As a smoker, I really don't have a problem with this at all.

But really that's because if I ever found myself stuck in or around Rockville, Maryland I'd shoot myself in the face.

"I don't like the way smoke gets in my hair and my clothes."

The real reason people support the ban.

"And I worry about the health risk."

Aaaaand right on queue, there's the bullshiat excuse they use as justification.

Tr0mBoNe: My university banned smoking on campus 3 years ago.

Ours did as well. The end result? People ignore it and it isn't enforced since the campus police make more money safety on parking tickets. As an added bonus there aren't any smokers stations anymore, (since the campus is "tobacco free".) meaning the butts gets thrown on the ground or in trash cans, making for a much less clean university.

/Yay for feel good legislation.

labman [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 06:27:14 PM
using this logic they should ban children. After all, screaming children can cause sound loud enough to damage hearing. Think of all the day care workers who have no choice but to be around children who have the potential to cause permanent hearing loss.

This is a good thing. If you can't smoke something more harmless like marijuana in public, than a worse drug like tobacco should be outlawed too.

We were 'banned' from tobacco use at my college. A little strangely, too.
But the 'smoke-pits' all had ash containers and cigarette disposals.

/only cigars.

Of all the drugs I've smoked, snorted, ingested or chewed, tobacco is the only one I'd like to go back in time and prevent younger-me from farking with.

2 years out, and still could do with a smoke...even though I can imagine with perfect clarity the nausia, dizziness, and shiatmouth that the experience entails.

Tobacco is truly an evil weed. Take heed, youngsters...take HEED!

/now get the fark off my lawn and go home

WireFire2 2008-08-03 06:52:20 PM
You can ban chewing and smoking indoors all you want the fact is that smokers are nasty and inconsiderate. The smokers just hang around the doors and blow smoke in everyone's face trying to go in and out. Then they leave their farking butts everywhere except in the can that was right next to them. The dippers are worse, spitting huge gobs of shiat where everyone walks or they leave their soda bottles filled with shiat and spit where ever its convenient, and is usually not a trash can.

The only ones to blame for wide spread bans is the smokers and dippers themselves. They are rude and inconsiderate of their nasty habits so that others have to out right ban them to keep them from making the place look like a truck stop.

That's one hell of an argument there. I challenge you to find ONE child care worker who has been inflicted with hearing loss because they worked with screaming children. On the other hand, there is evidence to support the idea that second hand smoke causes or exaserbates health problems. If you want to fark with your body, go for it, but do not do it where I attend classes. I do not believe that passing you as I head for my destination will give me cancer, but it sure as hell smells nasty, and quite frankly, your right to smoke ends with my right to breath tobacco smoke free air... I think SOMEHOW you will live without smoking for a couple of hours, if not, perhaps it is time that you examine your addiction and consider quitting.

Suz_e_Q 2008-08-03 06:53:46 PM
I just think its silly. At least at the Rockville location, they had already restricted smoking to a small area on the edge of campus, and everyone was really good about keeping it there. Now they're just going to have people ignoring the rules completely and smoking wherever the hell they want.

Oh, administration. Good job!

Smokers in UK are relatively safe right now, because the health nazis are too busy bashing anyone caught with excess weight. Its a welcome break, but I feel sorry for plumper people right now, who are being demonised faster than you can say zig heil.

Great Janitor 2008-08-03 06:56:50 PM
I support smokers and their rights. I don't smoke, but that doesn't mean I am against smoking. I am against people to take things that they don't like (for any reason) and try to make them illegal (like smoking, freedom of speech, right to own firearms, junk food and fast food, the list goes on and on...). Maybe I am this way because I've met non-smokers who wanted the government to ban smoking because they really wanted to quit themselves but weren't stopping, or were busy bodies who felt that if giving up all our freedoms and liberties to the government made us safe, healthy, and smart then that's exactly what we should be doing. In short, every anti-smoker that I've met were jackasses who couldn't and wouldn't take personal responsibility, nor would they allow anyone else to take it either and would rather that be laid upon the government.

Some people are too weak to control their own actions so they want the government to do it for them.

FTA

Karlynn BrintzenhofeSzoc, an associate professor at Catholic University and a clinical social worker who helps people with lung, throat and mouth cancers, said: "I don't think there are any unfair restrictions on choices around tobacco use.

The next question to her should have been, "And how do you feel about restrictions on gay sex?"

You can whine about the Nanny Staters all you want, but don't act like banning smoking on a college campus is like passing a law. AFAIK, Montgomery College (went there for 2 years) is a private institution and can ban whatever they choose on their property - if you don't like it, don't go there. As for many anti-smokers being douches, I'm a former smoker and I must agree.

WireFire2: the fact is that smokers are nasty and inconsiderate... The dippers are worse...

As a dipper, I'd have to agree with you about the smokers and dippers too. These addictions lead to personal behaviors that a person might not have otherwise... mainly littering of one sort or another, but I've seen prim and proper smoker aunts of mine (who keep their houses immaculate inside) throw a butt on the ground and do no more than stamp it out with their foot. The less refined smokers and dippers are truly disgusting.

Wow, what happened to the rights of business owners to decide if they could allow smoking or not?

If you're so keen on the local bar having the right to allow smoking on their property, why can't the local university ban smoking on theirs?

Just go to another university, right?

Right?

Even as a smoker, I can kinda see why they would ban smoking on campus. But all tobacco products? That just proves there is more to the bans than just second hand smoke, as I assumed the whole time.

Factories and cars are more to blame for rising cancer rates anyway, but I wouldn't want non-smokers to get their feelings hurt, so lets continue with all the bans anyway. Even the article says smoking is way down, however cancer rates are increasing. Any math majors here on Fark?

If you non-smokers think this is a victory, you are not paying attention to the facts. All of our personal freedoms are evaporating and you are celebrating. The joke is on you. As soon as all the smoking bans cycle through, they will move on to fast food restaurants, then bars themselves will be banned. Before long it will be like living in Germany in the 30's.

I can quit smoking, but you can't quit stupid. Please feel free to enjoy your smoke-free, however still toxic cancer causing fresh air.

Yep. Just about as intelligent as the IT people I've met and had the misfortune to work with on uni campus and at my present place of employ. That is to say, an idiot.
