Haven't been to the Pink Knoll Shores Aquarium for years - last time was when I was 12 or 13, seems like they were rennovating it every time I stayed in the Carteret County area. Still, I have very fond memories of that place. Maybe I'll have to make my way down there to see the little tyke.

I remember a few x-mas ago introducing Emmitt Otter to my kids hoping they would love it as much as I did when I first saw it. They were less than impressed. They thought it was boring and it didn't hold their attention.
I think I may have actually been offended and angry that the little bastards failed to acknowledge an important part mine and my wife's childhood.

/getting a little miffed just thinking about it
//I still love my kids

DRTFA but a question(s) about picture next to article. Are the weasel in question not being raised by the mom weasel (yes otter I know, still just a weasel)? If not, why?
Hand raised critters like are notorious for being difficult to manage. Like being a weasel is not bad enough.

Dude.

I'm a Jughead from WAAAAAAY back in the day. I saw "the Jugs" open for the Dead at Red Rocks, '78. Jerry Garcia sat in for the last three songs of the Jugs' set:

The Grateful Dead + Emmett Otter's Jug Band, Red Rocks, Morrison, CO, July 8, 1978:

The Jugs:
Brothers
Our World
The Bathing Suit That Grandma Otter Wore
Ain't No Hole in the Washtub
When the River Meets the Sea*
Bar-B-Que*
Riverbottom Nightmare Band*

* w/ Jerry Garcia

The Dead
First Set
Bertha >
Good Lovin'
Dire Wolf
El Paso
It Must Have Been the Roses
New Minglewood Blues
Ramble on Rose
Promised Land
Deal

Second Set
Samson and Delilah*
Ship of Fools*
Estimated Prophet* >
The Other One* >
Eyes of the World* >
Drums >
Otter Jam* >
Wharf Rat* >
Franklin's Tower*# >
Sugar Magnolia*

Encore

Terrapin Station
One More Saturday Night
Werewolves of London*

*Emmett Otter
# Jerry sang "Emmett's Tower" a few times instead of "Franklin's Tower", and we absolutely lost our shiat, it was so freaking funny. Jerry was just beaming.

He and Emmett were having a blast onstage. They were absolutely locked in, deep in the pocket. I mean, you could tell Emmett didn't really "know" the songs, but he was so adept, he could pick up the structure and get some good solos in. Dude had BIG ears. He was just picking his spots. He knew when to lay back and when to step out, which is why I think Jerry -- and the whole band, to be honest -- were having so much fun. It was epic.

Jerry even let Emmett play "The Wolf", which Jerry hadn't played in about a year. I think Jerry played Tiger throughout.

farking trippy, dude. There's a pretty good Bettyboard floating around of it. Something about those 77/78 Bettys....so nice and warm, and thick, syrupy analog goodness. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

The Jugs and the Dead, one stage, one night. Man. I will never forget that.

CruJones: I'm glad others remember that movie. Too many people I know have never heard of it.

Strange coincidence... my husband was just taking about Emmitt Otter on Friday night. Someone at work said something about otters, and he made a jugband comment... the 20-somethings looked at him with blank stares. He said he wasn't sure whether to cry or to throttle them, so he just said "ah, I'm too old," and the conversation went elsewhere. But I am so happy to let him know that the Farkers here would have gotten his reference. It will make him feel better.

I was babysitting for my my boy at work's girls recently....one is like, 6, the other about 4. My boy said they love Star Wars.

So, eventually, I popped it in (I think it was Empire, but it might have been Jedi, I forget).

A few minutes into the movie, one of them pipes up "where's Anakin? We only like the real 'Star Wars'."

It was damn near go-time. Them's was fighting words.

As the article says, the otter was orphaned via car.

This is what is wrong with the world, right there.

One summer we took my city folk nieces and nephews fishing and fixed them shore lunch. When my dad asked how they liked the fish (fresh caught walleye) my niece said, "It's real good Grandpa, almost as good as real fish." "real fish" = fish sticks.

I love the Pine Knoll Shores aquarium and library. Probably my favorite place on an island packed with great places--Jungleland, Fort Macon, Emerald Isle Pier (RIP).

I've been bitten by an otter, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Seriously though, I was in Peru, deep in the rainforests, and I met one. I had fish for lunch, so my hands smelt of fish. After one bite, he spat out my flesh, turned around, and "walked" (it's really more of a "slink" if my high ass self could describe it.) back to the river.

One of the weirdest experiences of my life.
