One of the best scenes in the now-defunct HBO series, "Rome," was when Octavian had Mark Antony and Cleopatra trapped in the palace in Thebes and had utterly defeated their army and had only to wait them out in order to seal complete and total victory. And so Mark Antony challenged Octavian to a one-on-one duel to settle their war that way, since it clearly hadn't already been settled decisively. And, surprisingly, Octavian refused the challenge.

That Octavian. What a coward.

Obama's in the lead, and historically it's the guy who's trailing that tries to arrange more events.

Three debates is all he will need to put McCain to bed. Any more and he'll simply humiliate the poor confused old poop.

Obama's being compassionate here. And subby's being silly. Or desperate.

FTFA: The Commission on Presidential Debates, established in 1987, sponsors and produces debates featuring the presidential and vice presidential candidates of the major parties. The nonprofit and nonpartisan organization has sponsored all the presidential debates since 1988

Nonpartisan? Bwahahaha!

Wikiwackywoo: The League of Women Voters Education Fund sponsored the 1976, 1980, and 1984 presidential debates. In 1988, the league withdrew from debate sponsorship, in protest of the major party candidates attempting to dictate nearly every aspect of how the debates were to be conducted, which ultimately resulted in the Democratic and Republican parties forming the Commission on Presidential Debates which gave the parties greater control over the debate environment. The Commission is funded entirely by corporate contributions.

Sample of the tough questions we can expect at the debates:

Sen. McCain, Sen. Obama - do you think America is the greatest nation in the Universe or merely the greatest nation on earth?

MorrisBird [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 10:01:49 AM

Of course the Boobiess are all haters letting us know that they are upset, but don't have much else to contribute. It is strange that so many critics think that Barack Obama is a performance artist and that his political message is about speaking well on stage.

Simply being respectful and positive and keeping to the center is really all it takes to win hearts and minds at this time. That would be easy for right wingers to work with and consistent with conservative ideology, but they are obsessed with total control and hate of all who are in any way different from them.

Even with all of that this outpouring of centrism opens the way to manipulate, even dominate the agenda. Yet instead of engaging the discussion, instead we get only a lot of criticism of speaking style as if conservative politicians were all stylish speakers.

People want to be free. Prison America is going to have to be dismantled one antisocial fundamentalist at a time.

I was hoping for more debates, but after the 22 of 'em he had to do for the primary, and getting burned by a few really stupid ones, I kind of understand wanting to stick to the substantive ones and not overdo it.

Also, the "Obama off the teleprompter lol" criticism would be more damaging if McCain could keep up with (or without) one. But as it stands we've got a Republican that sounds dumb all the time, and a Democrat who sounds dumb some of the time when he's not prepared. I hope somehow Bob Barr and Cynthia Mckinney make an appearance.

Dinki [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 10:16:52 AM
I think Obama is making a mistake here. It seems that ever since he won the nomination he's been taking the 'safe' route. It's like he hired the beltway consultants that were working for Hillary and for Kerry in 2004. The vote on FISA, his 'adjustments' on Iraq, and now this, all speak to a emphasis on triangulation instead of doing what got him the nomination. He should do the debates, and crush that old fart into the dirt. And he should fire every consultant that is telling him to play it safe.

Obama may already accept that McCain has the election locked up, and he may lose points in a debate. It's light utterly destroying Bush in the 2004 debates helped Kerry. I do believe Obama thinks he has a slight chance to win, but he is too intelligent to not see the signs of the inevitable McCain victory.

I've never seen 'Rome', but I was reminded of my favourite of the Narnia books, Prince Caspian, in which the evil king has the forces of good surrounded and trapped in a cave. They also have only to wait, starve them out and slaughter them. The evil king Miraz however, is vain enough to be goaded into a one-on-one duel with King Peter. He loses, and it all falls apart from there.

Why on EARTH would you let the side that's losing dictate the terms of engagement? Especially considering that there WILL be debates, and they'll be conducted on national television.

What does Obama have to gain by agreeing to folksy, town hall debates, which seem to be McCain's ONLY strength right now?

This.

It must be exhausting to come up with personal, trivial attacks on Obama that don't ricochet back on McCain with even more applicability.
On the other hand BHO does have more melanin... so he's got that going for him, which is nice.

(I don't remember ever seeing an Obama supporter anywhere say that he was perfect or "the savior."
Many people, obviously, are desperate for something to be very different in the executive branch than it is right now... and their enthusiasm and yearning being dismissed altogether, as if it were some kind of closed-loop perpetual delusion machine, is still something of a mystery IMO.)

Obama should do one of these debates. He should show up with a laptop, hand it to McCain and say, "Check your email."

Hobodeluxe [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 11:10:42 AM
the one thing I'm suspicious about is that McCain is getting info from the administration that Obama doesn't have and he might be able to use that in a debate when getting into specifics about certain topics. I can jut see McCain say some tihng like "well that would have been correct a month ago but yadda yadda yadda" and rolls out the new info that only he is privvy too because of the partisan whitehouse.

Brettster808 [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 11:17:03 AM
Please provide one link to a video where Obama can't think on his feet without a teleprompter and speaks like a current Republican President.

What was that, you can't find one?

That's what I thought.

It isn't a surprise that the mindless drones who support a liar like McCain would also be liars.

Great example you're setting, Mr. McLame.
