(AP) Weird Truck carrying 66 feet long, 75,000 pound ICBM booster rocket overturns. Local residents actually don't care. "As long as it ain't going off, we're OK," one said. "And if it did, it wouldn't matter anyway"   (hosted.ap.org) divider line 124

Did a 75,000 pound rocket explode in North Dakota? I'm sure I would have heard about that sort of thing. No news is good news.

oh yeah. because a 66 foot long , 75000 pound cylinder overturning while on the road isnt capable of any other form of damage

gotcha

Maybe they just know what unarmed means in that particular town?

Cornwell [TotalFark] 2008-08-03 08:27:52 AM
Wait, these are solid fuel rockets, right?

Although unarmed, one of these could do some serious damage if deciding to take of horizontally from a ditch?

I can understand their trust for the US Air Force. It certainly has demonstrated over the last few years how competent they are in all areas.

Nukes accidentally flying across the country, killing Canadians in Afghanistan, killing Brits in Iraq, routinely killing Afghan wedding parties.

Truly the best of the best.

Molavian 2008-08-03 08:42:07 AM
This isn't good. There isn't nearly enough fear-mongering going on in the article. We need to include some snips like, "While unarmed, there is the possibility the booster module is leaking unknown carcinogens into the ground water of the community" or "Some local residents are reporting an odd tingling sensation in their extremities since the accident occured."

Sheesh, what kind of journalism is this? We need something that's hard-hitting first thing in the morning, whether it's technically true or not.

I thought of this story...It's bogus but for a while everyone thought it was real.

The Arizona Highway Patrol were mystified when they came upon a pile of smoldering wreckage embedded in the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of a curve. The metal debris resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it turned out to be the vaporized remains of an automobile. The make of the vehicle was unidentifiable at the scene.

The folks in the lab finally figured out what it was, and pieced together the events that led up to its demise.

It seems that a former Air Force sergeant had somehow got hold of a JATO (Jet Assisted Take-Off) unit. JATO units are solid fuel rockets used to give heavy military transport airplanes an extra push for take-off from short airfields.

Dried desert lakebeds are the location of choice for breaking the world ground vehicle speed record. The sergeant took the JATO unit into the Arizona desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. He attached the JATO unit to his car, jumped in, accelerated to a high speed, and fired off the rocket.

The facts, as best as could be determined, are as follows:

The operator was driving a 1967 Chevy Impala. He ignited the JATO unit approximately 3.9 miles from the crash site. This was established by the location of a prominently scorched and melted strip of asphalt. The vehicle quickly reached a speed of between 250 and 300 mph and continued at that speed, under full power, for an additional 20-25 seconds. The soon-to-be pilot experienced G-forces usually reserved for dog-fighting F-14 jocks under full afterburners.

The Chevy remained on the straight highway for approximately 2.6 miles (15-20 seconds) before the driver applied the brakes, completely melting them, blowing the tires, and leaving thick rubber marks on the road surface. The vehicle then became airborne for an additional 1.3 miles, impacted the cliff face at a height of 125 feet, and left a blackened crater 3 feet deep in the rock.

Most of the driver's remains were not recovered; however, small fragments of bone, teeth, and hair were extracted from the crater, and fingernail and bone shards were removed from a piece of debris believed to be a portion of the steering wheel.

Precisely. It's an ICBM booster rocket - just the propulsion system. There's no explosives on board, maybe just some fuel.

So they have the basic common sense to not freak out over something that really isn't as big of a deal as the news would like you to think and they are the idiots?

It is unarmed and under armed guard, miles away from the actual town.

It must be hard for all of you internet experts to be so much wiser then these simple folks.

Hey, it's not rocket science.

Okay ... maybe in this case it is.

It's a booster rocket ffs, not the danged ICBM itself or a nuke like the article makes it out to be.

Unless that town is a shanty town cloistered solely around the rocket, and judging from the picture, I'd say there aren't any houses that are under the minimum safe distance of explosion.

Yup. Trumped up not-news-worthy farkworthy article.

Few people realize that the ill-fated Custer Expedition left from Bismarck, ND. A friend who's a lawyer in Bismarck jokes, "Custer's instructions when he left were: 'Don't do anything until I get back.'"

Or the ICBM crews falling asleep in the silos, half a dozen generals sacked for incompetence in the past few years, an entire nuclear bomber wing REPEATEDLY failing a Nuclear Surety Inspection...

My uncle is a retired F-15 Eagle driver, and a raging Dittohead. I remember his weekly emails bemoaning how Clinton had completely destroyed the Air Force's readiness and ability to wage war.

Seems like they had a pretty good track record up until recently.

It's not fueled and it's not armed. Basically, a large aluminum tube fell in a ditch in the middle of nowhere and is broken, waiting for its owners to figure out how to clean it up and salvage what they can. Aside from the cost to the taxpayer (since an ICBM isn't exactly $4.99 at Woolworths), this is no different than if an empty grain silo tipped over somewhere in the grand scheme of things.

Nothing to see here, folks.

Why would they even transport it with fuel in it? Don't they have like... fuel tankers for that sort of thing?
