(YouTube) Cool For the first time in 35 years, and perhaps the last, Neil Young plays the title tune of his failed 1973 album "Time Fades Away" to a crowd in Oberhausen, Germany   (youtube.com) divider line 27

Man, that's my favorite song by Neil Young, and my favorite record of his. That album needs to be re-released BADLY.

Glenechocreek 2008-08-02 04:03:08 PM
Time Fades Away wasn't a failure. It accomplished exactly what Neil wanted, which was to ditch a lot of his granola-hippie fans, and escape the Heart Of Gold mainstream. The next two albums, On The Beach and Tonight's The Night, finished the job.

Tonight's the Night won Neil a lot of crusty hippie fans.

According to Neil Young himself: "Time Fades Away is my least favorite album", the band was wrong, the feelings were wrong, he was a total alcoholic at the time, and isolated himself from the world.

Don't get me wrong, the music is GREAT, but the album accomplished nothing of what Young was actually trying to achieve, it was a good portrait of him at the time, but it's not one that he's proud of, and was by no means a success.

Nice find... I probably haven't heard that song in twenty years, or more. Can't vouch for him never having kicked this song even once in 35 years, but I've seen him at least a dozen times and I've never heard him play it.

I've got a decent sounding boot of that on CD.

Highly recommended for Neil Young fans. Most of the songs are excellent, and the fact that Neil was in a bad way make the songs seem more powerful. (the distracted two part harmony on the title track for instance)

Even though the CD isn't available, hasn't anyone tried to rip the vinyl version?

I listened to this album once... didn't like it very much... i didn't find much appealing or enjoyful [is that even a word?] about it...
i don't really get why it's regarded as a classic, but apparently a bunch of people out there really like it, so good for them :-)
and to each their own.
i dunno....maybe it's "a grower" lol.

I LOVE "On The Beach", tho.... i think it's the best album from him i've listened to so far...

Neil Young? Never heard of him.

Must a shriveled, bent, smelly old hippie.

Sorta like Clinton.

There is a really clean vinyl rip making the rounds; Aquarium Drunkard had it up a year or so ago.

Straight from the mouth of a shiatkicking redneck from Georgia...

SO, anyway....Neil Young...oh yeah...wasn't he the guy who passed out on stage and later had his stomach pumped because he had over a quart of semen in it? OH yeah...THAT guy...what a looser!

Awesome album. There have been a few test pressings made of the album on CD - Neil squashed the release several years ago, but some CD's have made it into collectors hands. If you search the torrent/trader networks, you can find a digital rip of the album.

I've seen all kinds of trolls in my day, but never a Neil Young troll... until today.

I have a vinyl rip of it - not the greatest NY album, but it should get re-released. Glenechocreek and third_uncle_eno mentioned On the Beach... That's one of the 4 that Rhino put out on DVD-A a few years ago.

I saw him on the Tonight's The Night tour in 1973. The album wasn't out yet, so the audience had no idea of what was in store for them. "Waaah, I want to hear Heart Of Gold and Cinnamon Girl, what's all this weird stuff?" Tough luck, granola-heads.

I loved it. The new songs were spooky and riveting, and he did do some old Buffalo Springfield in his acoustic set. Great show, Neil.

Im pretty opinionated to the over-arching hackness that Neil has become but 'Time Fades Away' a "failed" album?

So what if Neil doesnt like it? Why the heck did he release it then?
He's been living off his 'I have a hundred EXCELLENT albums in my
vaults' b.s. for years; his comment is just nonsense.

Its a great album, unlike most of his recent stuff especially
that POC 'Chrome Dreams II'

I want a copy of TRANS, myself. Or 'Landing On Water'

Neil's Worst album of all time was RE-AC-TOR
and the funniest

"Got mashed potato
Ain't got no T-Bone..."

I really liked Hawks and Doves, Trans, and Harvest Moon

I always thought he was saying "down on Queen street"...
