kona: they might as well give you a chance to turn yourself in for pot at the same time

This will work about as well as the "Pay down the US debt if you have extra cash" program. Remember that?

This is the dumbest thing I ever saw.

"We are going to make it as comfortable as possible," said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "Rather than coming into our custody and facing us in the wee hours of the morning, they can come and sit down with us."

Nice sentiment. But completely naive and unrealistic.

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2008-08-02 01:35:59 PM
The reason people with outstanding deportation orders aren't turning themselves in isn't because the meeting schedule is inconvenient.

SpeshilEdjukashin [TotalFark] 2008-08-02 01:43:58 PM
They don't want to leave. If they wanted to leave, they could walk right up to the border. How do we make them want to leave? We take their jobs. If business owners quit breaking the law by hiring them, they will go home. All the government needs to do to end illegal immigration is go after the companies that employ them. Imagine how quickly all of the small business owners would fire their illegals if the government started seizing assets and locking people up.

Crosshair [TotalFark] 2008-08-02 05:28:53 PM
How well has Arizona's "Anti-Illegal Immigrant Hiring Law" done? It seems to have stood up well against court challenges. Anyone in AZ want to comment on its effectiveness?

They are criminals. fark 'em, barge in during the night.

Raiden333 [TotalFark] 2008-08-02 06:56:49 PM
It'd be a lot better if they set up the program as intended but put advertisements up in Spanish in the poor neighborhoods saying that the government had passed a bill saying illegal residents were to receive free citizenship and $500 for their helpful contributions to America's floundering economy.

Probably get a few more bites, and the illegals that ignore it are obviously either more interested in earning what they make instead of getting free handouts from the government or displaying an intelligence greater than most legal citizens would.

Is there anything the gov't doesn't fail at?
Other than taking freedom that is.

smooshie [TotalFark] 2008-08-02 07:47:13 PM
If people are risking their lives to illegally enter this country, it means there's a pretty big problem with legally entering it. I mean, when I applied for citizenship, it took me a year and a half of waiting and filling out stupid forms. I'm guessing for Average Jose, there simply isn't a way to get in here legally. There should be (along with a quick criminal background check).

The government needs to offer up some fake money to convince illegals to turn themselves in or get people to trick illegals in requiring their work only the take them to the immigration office.

GaryPDX: This is the dumbest thing I ever saw.

That's true, what's even dumber? There will be at least one person to do this.

TheGreyPiper 2008-08-02 08:23:31 PM
Hey, it's worth a shot. And it defuses the criminal-loving crybabies who whimper "Ooh, why doesn't the bad ol' government at least try something less mean than barging into people's homes in the middle of the night?".

Now when the Feds come with the round-'em-up busses and the soylent green scoopers, they can say "We tried doing it the nice way!"

Great Janitor 2008-08-02 08:23:37 PM
My local police department has a similar program. They want all murderers, burglars, rapists and arsonists to turn themselves in. They've been doing this for years.

The First 2008-08-02 08:23:41 PM
Nice to see my tax dollars being used on something useful like this.

Only thing dumber would be the person(s) who turns themselves in.

Shyt like this reminds me of the DHS agent in the Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay.

I'm sure they'll form a committee to select a committee
to evaluate the effectiveness of this dumb-ass idea.

I was visiting Chihuahua Mexico on a business trip. The locals told me a story about illegal immigrants and the local Chihuahua branch of the Home Depot. It seems the Coyotes transporting Central Americans through Mexico to the United States told the Central Americans that they were in the U.S., and dropped them off in front of the Home Depot. At first, the Central Americans wondered why everyone spoke Spanish.

Attempting to solve a problem by addressing the cause of the problem instead of the symptoms of it? You're not American, are you?

I'd rather the government spend billions of dollars building a wall and deporting people. It's not going to actually help solve anything, but it *looks* like the government is doing something...and in the end isn't that more important?

Danger Avoid Death 2008-08-02 08:31:36 PM
Do this in December. Then maybe somebody will need a cheap ride home to Mexico for the Holidays and you'll get a few takers.

Bohemian 2008-08-02 08:31:39 PM
More waste of government dollars brought to you by the Department of Homeland Insecurity.

But why not. This is the same agency that bungled Katrina. The same agency that has decided they can take your laptop, phone and other electronics at the airport without reasonable cause and keep them for months on end. This is the same agency that put one of CNN's reporters on the no fly list for doing an unflattering story about the TSA. Chertoff is a moron that couldn't handle running a Burger King.

How much money are they wasting on this turn yourself in program?

San Diego and four other U.S. cities will participate in the program, which is slated to end Aug. 22. The other locations are Santa Ana; Chicago; Phoenix, Ariz.; and Charlotte, N.C.

yeah, but not San Francisco.... FARK OFF Gavin....

Well, I live in Norcal. If you dropped them off at my local Home Depot, they would find that most everyone spoke Spanish here too.

Perhaps it's because the government agencies in charge of regulating immigration have various quotas?

Perhaps the quota for "poor, essentially uneducated, with no job prospect lined up" isn't nearly as high as "financially stable, educated, with job prospect" because we already have plenty of the former and not enough of the latter?

Personally, I'd rather have the government quotas allow for more skilled, productive people (engineers, scientists, etc.) to immigrate to the US while limiting the number of unskilled laborers, particularly when there's a great surplus of unskilled laborers (both native citizens, legal immigrants, and illegal immigrants) already existing in the US.

AWESOME! I guarantee you that many, many Border Patrol agents employ illegal aliens. Many of their parents and cousins are illegal aliens. "Operation Futility" ended about 30 years ago.

/damn, I miss that SD weather, though

But with all the wealth they are generating for the state, why would anyone want them to turn themselves in?

oregoncat 2008-08-02 08:53:30 PM
The important thing is that during this election season it at least looks like the Republicans are doing something about the immigration issue...

alienofamerica [TotalFark] 2008-08-02 08:55:22 PM
So their reward for turning themselves in is... deportation?
Wouldn't a better option be to try to get these people Green cards so they can legally work and live here?
