Because some people get all "ZOMG! RADIATION!" and its fun to laugh at them.

Anyway, yes it sucks that the US nuked Japan in WWII. I can totally see the Japanese objecting to the US or its allies stationing nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles in Japan. But freaking out over the use of nuclear reactors for motive power? Silly in the extreme.

"Water tainted with radiation." Hasn't anyone explained that when diluted in seawater, radiation levels immediately drop to about the level of background radiation? Or that water makes great radiation insulation? Unless you're drinking directly from the leak, this is a total non-issue.

The leak, which was too small to have any impact on the environment, was found during an inspection of the nuclear-powered Houston in Hawaii, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said, citing information provided by the U.S. government.

God damn it what is with the awkward sentences?

Water containing a small amount of radiation leaked from a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine that stopped by Japan earlier this year, the U.S. Navy and Japanese government said on Saturday, prompting calls by civic groups for full disclosure.

The chief government spokesman, Nobutaka Machimura, said at a news conference that the radioactive amount - estimated at less than half a microcurie - was too insignificant to "affect the human body or the environment."

Totally insignificant.

While in dry dock, a crewmember of the Houston was wetted with less than one gallon of water from a potentially contaminated hull fitting. The crewmember was not found to be contaminated.

It's not even clear that the water was actually from the reactor plant. However, there is a POSSIBILITY of boundary valve leakage, and the Nuclear Navy prefers to fail safe... so they give Japan a routine heads-up (Which is a requirement of our SOF/RCR agreements with Japan, probably) that three months prior leakage MIGHT have occurred and IF it did, it would be insignificant in terms of health or environmental impact and probably undetectable after the fact.

For political reasons relating to the objection to the GW replacing the shiatty Kitty, the incident is blown out of proportion and calls are made for "full disclosure". They already have the relevant information. What do they want? Material history?

heypete: But freaking out over the use of nuclear reactors for motive power?

It's more like "being pissed that this happened back in MARCH and it's only getting out now."

The issue is communication, and various face involved.

itazurakko [TotalFark] 2008-08-02 05:46:15 PM
Actually... thinking of something else. My apologies.

But yeah, when these things flame up, usually it's NOT about the incidents themselves but the communication times.

/teach me to doublecheck TFA first.
