The Angry Hand of God: Why don't they put a mailbox at the bottom of the hill?

They are required by law to have their mail delivered by something like 10am or 11am... everyday. Pony express, anyone?

I hope that they at least allow villagers to pick up mail for each other rather than making the entire populace go to the post office.

ironicsky [TotalFark] 2008-08-02 03:46:26 PM
It doesn't make sense for them to drive 45 minutes to drop off mail to 11 people. I agree with putting a road side mail box up the road that residents can go to, the elderly can get someone else to pick up their mail.
In Rural Manitoba they don't always have door to door mail pickup. Somewhere along the highway will be a few columns of big green mail boxes that the guy drops off the mail to, and residents are expected to pick it up themselves. Not a difficult concept.

Have you ever carried a mail bag? Especially those double ones where you either have mail on both your front and back, or hanging from each side? Each side can easily weigh in at 30-40lbs making carrying a huge ass mailbag up and down hills difficult.

I definately dont think the mail guy should be throwing out mail, thats bullshiat, considering their job isn't difficult, and our mail guys get fringe benefits like icecream, slurpees and bottled water on the job from the post office.

Throw enough money at anything and it will "work." Both RM and BR were effectively massive welfare programs for rural / Tory Daily Mail reading types.

While there's not much good that can be said about the price of a rail ticket these days ("pound for mile, easily the worst in the world"), the frequency of trains for routes that actually carry people has gone up nicely, and even with the post office closures I still have no less than 7 post offices within about a mile of where I live.

Furthermore, because I live in a town with actual people in it, I get prompt and efficient mail service every day. I have no problems whatsoever with a fair policy of villages of 11 people getting their mail service in fair proportion - for example, a postman in our town can probably deliver for 110 houses and flats in a typical hour on his route. Given that it takes an hour of time to deliver to Booze, for example, they should be limited to mail once every ten days. A common post box at the top of the hill might reduce the time required to fifteen minutes, so then once ever two or three days is fair.

There are few recipients of greater welfare in the world then those who live in greenbelt britain, especially anybody who has anything to do with farming.

I zoned out 4 times reading subby's headline before saying 'ah fark it' and clicking on the comments.

I say the mailmen get it too tough. If you want your mail that bad in bad weather or if you live up a steep hill then get it your own damn self. Serves you right for living in the most inconvenient place ever.

^ Yeah, if it wasn't for public oversight/funding, do people really think that sparsely population places like this would get better service for the same price? Urban areas heavily subsidize mail carrier services for rural areas. I don't understand why those in the countryside are constantly complaining about a service they don't even pay their fair share for.

It's the same thing here in Canada; rural areas are complaining because the postal service is starting to create centralized boxes instead of door to door delivery. Considering you can send a letter hundreds of miles away for the same price as sending it next door, I really don't understand why people would call for privitisation.

The Angry Hand of God: Why don't they put a mailbox at the bottom of the hill?

It's human nature to complain about change. The villagers should take the post office up on it's offer of mailboxes at the end of the road. It beats a 45 minute trip to the mail sorting station.

I would name it "Glue". "Glue" is a good name for a horse. It gives the horse something to look forward to. "Edgar" is also a good name for a horse, but not "Steve". "Steve" would be a stupid name for a horse, but a good name for a cat.

This is the Royal Mail service, not the U.S. Postal service, so any mail delivery rules do not apply. As for required deliver time, I've never heard of that. Do you have some proof citing that mail must be delivered within a certain time frame?

The fact that it's taken renationalisation of the track operator and a huge subsidy to reach that point tells us what... ?

Bomb Head Mohammed: Furthermore, because I live in a town with actual people in it, I get prompt and efficient mail service every day.

Lucky you. My company, in central Manchester, is just under the threshold that would permit us to use TNT and, as a consequence, we suffer the Royal Mail for our mass mailings. As with my home, in a town of 70,000, the service is neither prompt nor efficient.

What you've seemingly failed to take into account, in your formula, is that a theoretical market driven postal service (you'll be hard pressed to find a real one) isn't interested in Booze's post or yours.

mama's_tasty_foods 2008-08-02 06:40:36 PM
When you live in BFE, people do not want to deliver services to you when it is vastly more expensive per person than in more populated areas.

Has Ric Romero been notified of this stunning development?

Royal Mail has written to the 11 homes in the tiny hamlet in the Yorkshire Dales, telling them that the only road linking them with the outside world is too narrow and dangerous for its vans.

Interesting. And how do they propose to get those 11 letters to those 11 homes?

I disagree, long-distance (if you book early) tickets are astonishingly cheap. You can travel for half the cost of the petrol and the trains are clean and usually on time. OK a daily commute to work in a city will be a royal pain in the arse and probably as expensive as driving.

At least in the UK, the postal carriers are a diffrent sort of "professional" than the US postal carriers. UK postal carriers may be lazy, but a US postal carrier is one snide comment away from letting you find out the magazine capactiy of a Glock 17 the hard way.

A vast amount. This is the cheapest house I could find within a mile of the village:

* Character Dales Semi-detached Cottage
* 2 Double Bedrooms
* 2 Bathrooms
* Lounge
* Kitchen. Cellar

£185,000

Fark doesn't like the direct link, but you can search here. The classic 'roses round the door' cottage would set you back at least £300k.

'The road is extremely narrow, and if you have to reverse down, this is potentially an accident waiting to happen.'

Not trying to split hairs, but isn't any sort of driving pretty much an accident waiting to happen?

Carrying the mail on foot is also out of the question, because the postman has a 'bad back'.

Just in case the postman might be feeling a little litigious, it might be best not to fire him. But what about reassigning him, say, to a route that doesn't require walking hills?

Last week, residents received a letter signed by delivery office manager Colin Appleby

Let's hope no lives were risked delivering these letters.

GoddessPrime 2008-08-02 08:29:30 PM
As a resident of Canada, I really have to say that I much prefer the service of Royal Mail over the USPS.

I buy a lot of things over the internet and it usually takes about 2-3 weeks for me to receive stuff from the States. When I order stuff from the UK it's always here in a week. Well, once it took a whole 10 days but every other time it's been a week.

Since packages from both have to travel via Canada Post to get to me at the end (so they have an equal probability being screwed up), the only explanation for the difference in delivery times is that the originating postal system is the culprit.
