I sure feel safer from the TERRORISTS now that our wonderful government is searching houseboats.

GaryPDX [TotalFark] 2008-08-02 09:55:02 AM
A bunch of little tyrants with badges. See what happens when you give government too much power? This won't change if the Dems get in power. They precedents are already in place and it's an awesome excuse to do more and tax more...you know...to keep you safe and compliant.

No. You should vote for RON PAUL!

It costs a lot of your money to provide you with this inconvenience, so be quiet and don't complain.

It would be nice if the Dems reversed a lot of this shiat but I don't see it happening. The People will have to stand up on this stuff to get anything done about it. There is not much difference between these parties.

Ron Paul can fix this shiat.

I wonder how many of the people who gnash their teeth and hurl curses skyward over this police-state style intrusion into their pleasure boating have also voiced loud and ongoing complaints about how little the government does to curb illegal immigration and police the borders.

A lot of people see the hypocrisy. That's the simmering problem. Not much is even logical coming out of Washington.

Yet you only rile against "the Dems" in your initial post. And FWIW, "the Dems" *are* in power. They hold a majority in both the Congress and the SCOTUS. So perhaps you mean if *a* Dem gets in power.

Beside that, I hold you and your "independent" minded peers responsible for the current situation. You, either directly (by campaigning for the Republicans) or indirectly (by campaigning against the Democrats), got GWB got elected. Twice.

I voted for Gore the first time and against Kerry. I never did like BushCo. And just so you know, BushCo are not true conservatives so it's dumb to label all Republicans and Conservatives with BushCo asshattery. Now, BushCo is gone into the dust bin of history in 5 months no matter who gets elected. I dunno about you, but I haven't heard either one of these parties even hinting of reversing any of the intrusive crap. Obama voted for the FISA dealio..so what gives here? And if you think Pelosi is going to reverse any of it..you're high.

I never said otherwise. Stopping putting words in my mouth and making arguments against things I've never said. Also, I would like to point out that *once again* you are simply playing lip service to the whole "both sides are equally as bad" idea. You say they both suck, but then only outline how the Dems suck.

Not as long as these two parties play their stupid game. Ron Paul can put a stop to this merry go round that's been going on since Lincoln.

I'm talking about you. *You* need to be more honest. If we, as individuals, are more honest -- and demand the same from the people we deal with -- then the system will change with it.

Me? I'm as honest as I can be based on the smoke screens coming from all directions. There's as much bullshiat and weird expectations as there is diversity in our country. Everyone one wants to force their own idealism on everyone else. I always default to George Washington's warnings about parties..always. When people can start thinking for themselves and align the Constitution, I'll feel much better about the future of America.

That seems to have morphed into treating criminal behavior as terrorism.

I dunno. Those Canadian icebacks might be few in number, but they are fierce. Just a couple of them could wreck all of Cleveland's economy.

I guess they saved money on R&D and all that by just buying the boats the US Coast Guard uses.

I should have invested in the SAFE boat company 10 years ago...

We might have to kill our nanny state in order to protect ourselves from being terrorized by it's "security".

And yes, they do cause a lot of terror.

The logic fails to convince me. Perhaps if there were backing details...

I don't see what law enforcement on Lake Erie has to do with terrorism.

lotus [TotalFark] 2008-08-02 11:28:24 AM
For further backing, I'm a member of an "incident commander" team at a small upper michigan hospital. You paid to fly me down to Alabama for training (cheap bastards, you could have sent me to the bahamas). Are we more safe for it? Are we more at risk? nope. However, that homeland security money is spending left and right. Though I'm a beneficiary, I also pay taxes and find it sickening.

Mongo cut wood 2008-08-02 11:32:13 AM
Good. This is no different than Police increasing patrols or doing those weekend patrols to catch drunk drivers.

Besides soon the EPA will make it virtually impossible to operate a private boat by eliminating exemptions in the Clean Water Act for recreational boat discharges. In september boaters will be required to have the same permits that large ocean going vessels need. The cost for those will end boating unless Congress passes the Clean Boating Act.

Boat Discharge Permits (new window)

Not really. Legislation still has to pass the veto monkey in the oval office. Or his veto has to be overridden and "the Dems" do not have the numbers to do that alone.

And don't the republicans still have enough seats to squash any legislation the dems try to push through? Since they know Bushie is sitting in the White House with his Veto Crayon?

Chief Scott R. Patronik With increased security comes increased inconvenience

False.

TFA In fact, in recent years, the increased patrols have led to the apprehension of a number of people from countries that are on the federal government's terrorism watch list, such as Pakistan.

Heavens! People from Pakistan were apprehended! That was a close one. I trust there are no more of them running loose.

Oh wait, there are tens of thousands, and those are just the ones with degrees.

Border Patrol security expert A.J. Price: "What's a more serious threat, alcohol or terrorism?"

Oooh! I know! The answer is again: False. We also would have accepted "the fish".

I guess to be more technical, we could look at annual death rates directly linked to each. Alcohol was attributed in a little over 100,000 deaths per year in the US from 1979 to 1996.

The US State Department corrected terrorism related death numbers for 2003 released by the CIA. Their increased accounting claimed 625 deaths, 3646 wounded. Worldwide.

But I'm sure our highly trained security professionals have factored all of these into their efficient and effective measures.

How are they going to crash boats into skyscrapers?

mcmiller 2008-08-02 11:56:30 AM
FTA: "I saw a Niagara County Sheriff's boat stop a pleasure craft with two guys and three girls as they were leaving Newfane Town Marina. Then when they got to the breakwall, a sheriff's auxiliary boat stopped them. Later out on Lake Ontario, a Coast Guard boat stopped them," Busch said. "It was ridiculous."

Because water cops are not different from land cops. One cop pulls over a car or boat with an "extra" hot chick and then he radios ahead to his buddies because it's the right thing to do.

Funny none of these other boaters were quoted in the article.
