Margaret Thatcher was the best prime minister since Churchill.

Anyone who blames her for killing off British industry has clearly forgotten what it was like before she was elected. The UK economy was heading down the toilet in a big way and had been since the sixties. She was like a doctor who amputated your leg because it had gangrene and saved your life. Most people would understand what happened and thank the doctor for saving their life but some tards forget that they had gangrene when they arrived at the hospital and blame the doc for them losing their leg. Thatcher did what had to be done and no one else had the guts to do.

I didn't realize until I RTFA this time that a state funeral is part of an elaborate protocol of funeral types and not merely an acknowledgement that somebody important died.

TFA: Both the Queen Mother and Princess Diana had a Royal Ceremonial funeral, a slightly less formal affair. And there were four non-Royal State funerals in the 19th Century - Nelson, Wellington, Palmerston and Gladstone.

Oh, no need for a urinal.

She should have a state funeral, and the it should be organised and run by the lowest international bidder.

I'll do it for 20p. I'll throw petrol all over the scabby corpse then charge people 20p to put the fire out with their own urine.

Its a measure of how effective Thatcher was that Labour* had to adopt many of her policies (or at least promise to leave them alone) in order to get elected.

Feel free to hate her, but she

(a) was one of the three (Reagan, John Paul II) that were most responsible for the end of Soviet communism, and

(b) was nearly single-handedly responsible for breaking the stranglehold of unions on the UK economy.

It was more like frostbite on the toes but the unions refused to have the foot removed so she went ahead and took the whole leg.

I'd argue the man who was "most responsible for the end of Soviet communism" was Joseph Stalin. I'm not sure that Lenin's model would have been successful, but Stalin's series of "five-year plans" were a disaster. It was a nation doomed to failure. Gorbachev tried to modernize it enough to last, and couldn't pull it off. China saw this long before anyone else and made adjustments to survive.

You can say that Reagan and the boys did give the Soviet Union that final shove that pushed them over the edge (maybe), but it was going down regardless of who was in there.

I realize you're probably talking about China's economic liberalization (such as it is) since 1979, but please read up on the "Great Leap Forward", which started in 1958, five years after Stalin's death. China did not modernize because they saw the Soviet Union had failed; they made plenty of mistakes on their own that resulted in millions of people starving to death. And economic liberalization started in 1979 because by that time Mao had died and they had gotten rid of his closest cronies in power.

Her brain isn't that hard to find. Her hearth, on the other hand, would probably only show up on an electron-microscope.

Like shutting down the only manufacturing corporation that turned a million $ profits in it's first year of operation and it's 2nd. Oh and it also helped to curtail violence in Northern Ireland, created over 2,000 jobs in NI AND in England (not to mention it took those people off of welfare), as well as bailed other companies out too because it used local some local suppliers as well. Plus after she shut it down, all investors were paid back almost .99 cents on the dollar that they invested.
