Not based around 12-bar blues? Unpossible! All music is based around 12-bar blues.

/wife listens to their album way too much. Yet she yawns when I play my Paco de Lúcia CDs... curious.

I can get behind this. Lots of melody, rhythm and percussive playing. No comparison to those speed demon note masturbators.

It has no soul, but not for the reasons subby thinks. It wasnt much fun to watch because They don't convey any passion or joy, like most technical musicians. seems like when you study scales for too long, it drains the passion out of you.

Kind of like seeing Keith emerson playing 1000 scale on his keyboard, sure he is great but im soooooooooooo bored.

I know the song here isnt rock, but my theory is that 90% of the best rock songs ever written were done by kids not even 20 who could barely play their instruments.

Because they play with their balls, their heart and their guts. No music knowledge is necessary, only instinct

Way Boring- there are a lot of musicians who play that style of music much better, and with much more talent. Why are they so popular?

Listen to "Vaseline Machine Gun" by Leo Kottke and it will stay with you all day.

I was never like that, once I like something, Ill still like it 20 years down the line. I still listen the stuff I liked when I was 18

I just find that simplicity in music makes for much better, direct and honest songs

There is no connection between the simplicity or complexity of a song and it's honesty.

That's just silly.

It kind of makes me sad that people would limit themselves to such a tiny slice of music. I understand that people have different tastes and won't like everything, but there's so much good music out there that doesn't fit within this limited genre.

People who think music is spawned from the stupid facial expressions and movement a musician does are stupid.

Not everyone plays for the benefit and showmanship of others. Sometimes they just like to play.

I sure as hell don't sit there, playing my guitar while I make psuedo-emotional faces with every note I hit.

But I guess I'm not a real musician, huh? ... only playing 9 different ones. It's all technical... no real musical skill.

I can agree with that. Of course, I have no idea where you're coming from. I've never heard anyone listening to music at home suddenly exclaim, "But I can't see their faces!" before harrumphing dejectedly away.

Sometimes they just like to play.

And sometimes I just like to listen. Are you telling me my likes are trumped by those of musicians, real or unreal or even ranting?

sorry if i conveyed that, but thats quite the opposite, I listen to everything jazz, classical, prog, punk, world, blues , rap... ect... so what i said before is a generalization of years and years of music. As much as I love and appreciate some jazz Like mingus, miles, Pharaoh sanfers, roland kirk ext ext ... it will never grab me as viscerally as a good 3-chord classic

I guess i typed 20 paragraph that could be reduced to : "less is more"

HappyHappy...: and how does she feel when you slap some Einsturzende Neubauten?

Cool... new band for me to check out this weekend. By the qwikipedia description, I'll probably like it a lot.

She'll probably say "I'll give you and Pere Ubu some privacy" and then leave the room to listen to Rodrigo & Gabriela, or Vampire Weekend, or Fleet Foxes, or Radiohead or Coldplay or whoever else she's listening to this week.

/cracks me up every time. In our house, "Pere Ubu" has become the genericized trademark for anything weird from my music collection. Originally, it was "Oingo Boingo" but eventually she started liking them.

hOLY smoke, I automatically assumed that your handle was a reference to the German band ... yeah, check em out, its industrial music as industrial as it gets (they used actual power tools), but you kind of have to know your way around them ,some albums are just a tad noisy and like i mentioned, "halber mensch" is a great one... here is the audio for one of the song from that album (new window)

enjoy if you can

I liked this playing, and I found it quite soulful more than technical. She's playing percussion on her acoustic for chrissakes.

And yes I have seen Paco Delucia live, and yes I think he was the best guitarist I have ever seen. Not much experience with flamenco except that, I must admit.

You're exactly right. I've read about them and have their CD, and they DONT play with any passion. So here's the deal with them: they come from a failed Metal band, and found out people like this music, so they started playing it to pay the bills. In the album notes, they make it patently obvious that they dont like this kind of music. Its all sorta lame.

But the music is fun

Music is a LANGUAGE. And like some spoken or written ones, some get many and some can only get one or a few. Technical is the correct description, and the talent these players have as well of the mastery of their instruments is obvious.

That said, music as a LANGUAGE has to touch some essential part of any individuals human experience to matter or be enjoyed. From making you tap your foot, to making you weep, if it doesn't then the artist has failed to COMMUNICATE with you.

The playing was fantastic, but the music sucked because they aren't feeling it in the first place, and you can't convey what you don't feel.

The two Michaels were great friends, and performed together often.

You can often bittorent their 1994 show together in Maryland--GREAT stuff.

Why do the best often disappear so young?

the_american_president 2008-08-02 10:42:30 AM
+1 to Leo Kottke's "Vaseline Machine Gun". If you like Kottke you'll also probably like John Fahey as well; the two were pioneers of the acoustic style known as "American Primitive". Absolutely superb.

Doc Watson was a wizard with an acoustic -- he did the definitive version of "Windy and Warm". (And he reversed the usual career arc of guitarists by starting out on an electric and moving to an acoustic.)

I must say, though, that a lot of the modern acoustic stuff is nice but completely forgettable. It's mostly new-agey jazz stuff, or pseudo-flamenco arrangements. Nothing wrong with that (Esteeeebaaaaaan!), but it doesn't really stand out. It's the kind of stuff you'd expect some sallow chick to be playing in a coffee house somewhere. Meh.
