Still is no matter who wants to do it.

What? You're irked I didn't swallow your troll bait? Too bad.

He was against it before he was for it.

It's still dumb.

Anything that condones driving more is a bad idea. The "working families" have no sympathy from me; people should live near work, play, and/or public transit so they don't have to drive as much. Communities should be built with this in mind. I'd like a stimulus check for NOT driving.

Nabb1 [TotalFark] 2008-08-01 04:01:54 PM
I think "New Coke" edges it out, but what was it Ben Franklin said about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?

jaylectricity [TotalFark] 2008-08-01 04:08:21 PM
I paid taxes with my stimulus check.

Ron Paul would send everyone real gold, not checks to cash on the Federal Reserve's fiat currency.

I don't know what Franklin said, but coincidently Einstein said that it was the definition of insanity.

I paid for rehab with it. But, this economy suck so bad I wish I were still on drugs. :(

So the idea is to tax the oil companies so the govt can give us little guys a check so we have more money to pay for fuel so the oil companies can continue making a profit?

The Stealth Hippopotamus [TotalFark] 2008-08-01 05:27:30 PM
YEAH!! Lets borrow more money from China to buy Chinese goods!!

/loves tax cuts
//should come from cuts in spending
///wonders how we are going to have tax cuts and a trillion dollar increase in the budget
////not really I know how

ThisIsNotSubtle [TotalFark] 2008-08-01 05:36:23 PM
Obama, man, please don't do this shiat to me. We don't agree on everything, but so far I've been able to love you anyway because hey, honorable men/women can disagree.

But this, this is stupid, weapons grade stupid. And stupid I have trouble forgiving. Read your history! Semi-random monetary gifts to the people never end well! It's a vicious cycle, and I understand the political and social momentum that makes it seem like a good idea. But it really isn't.

/Still voting for him.

Uh, yeah, Franklin said that was Einstein's definition of insanity. Smart guy, that Franklin. Way ahead of his time.

And he knows that! He has his base locked down and out of play. So now it is time to out "conservative" McCain. Which is very easy to do (save on the military topic). So you can look forward to Obama being more Republican than the Republican in the race.

My prediction? This ain't gonna be close. Either Obama is going to win very big or is going to self destruct. Of course I thought Hillary was going to be the next Prez. So take it for what it is worth.

I'm not crazy about this, but at least he's proposing a way to pay for it, unlike Bush.

Right -- instead of cutting spending, he's suggesting that we just tax private business. Fantastic idea.

Ok, that is an order of magnitude more stupid. Took a 'special' administration to get that going.

It's the fault of "working families" that their civic leaders are corrupt politicians in the hands of local construction contractors. They should suffer for this. Damn you, plebian scum!

Solid State Vittles 2008-08-01 07:21:35 PM
Anyone wondering where the hell McCain is going with this "don't vote for my celebrity opponent" thing? Might be one of the dumber criticisms I've ever seen. It's like he's some nerdy 8th grader running for student council president against a cheerleader and doesn't want it to be a popularity contest. We get it, John, you think people are voting for Obama because he's coooooool. Ain't going to work, that's not the appeal.

Sums it up nicely for me as well. I'm still voting for him, but this is a bad idea. Not "can't vote for you" bad, but bad all the same.

What exactly does $600 rehab entail?

I'm picturing being chained to sadist's radiator and a lot of "You'll drink urine - and like it!"

Tax and Spend! Tax and Spend!

It's a lot better than Tax Less and Spend More! That only works for about 4 years. But then it becomes another president's problem.

moralpanic 2008-08-01 09:00:02 PM
It was a VERY short-term solution. Of course the economy would get a slight blip when that much money is given out to the population, but is $600 really going to be that significant of a help to people?

Well, taking a fraction of the record profits from big oil and giving it back to us is akin to lowering the price retroactively, isn't it?

Yes, yes, big oil will just raise the price to make up for it I suppose.

But then again I thought the oil companies didn't control the price.

Somebody straighten me out on this.

helix400: This:

Do you really think this is because McCain is saying that Obama is like totally the pretty girl and this shouldn't like all be like a popularity contest LOL? That rollercoaster of a graph you posed moves for a lot of reasons, but I have a hard time believing that this very dumb talking point is one of them.

Hey, when a meaningless daily tracking poll is all ya got, you have to go with it.

Flying Code Monkey 2008-08-01 09:15:14 PM
He's certainly doing his best to make me forget about the reasons I've supported him. No way in hell would I vote for McCain, and I'm still impossibly sick of the RNC smear machine, but my enthusiasm has suffered these last few weeks for reasons having nothing to do with the McCain campaign's infantile attacks.

Probably the worst part will be conceding that all the obnoxious "see they really are all the same!1!" guys were right.

/not looking forward to that

Negative attack ads work. Attacking Obama on oil and on him being naive works. It may not be completely true, but it works.

Shrugging Atlas 2008-08-01 09:24:44 PM
I remember how most thought the stimulus package was the dumbest idea ever. I suspect most of those people still do. I'd wonder how many people who thought it was the cat's ass are still singing that tune.

baercat 2008-08-01 09:28:36 PM
Yay let big oil pay for our welfare check and we can use it to pay the 6 dollar gas we'll have because of the taxing he plans

Tor_Eckman [TotalFark] 2008-08-01 09:29:51 PM
Nemo's Brother: It's not dumb when the Messiah does it. Duh!

Taking tax money and giving out $600 as a way to stimulate the economy while running record debt and spending billions on our adventure in Iraq is quite a bit different than extracting a small fraction of big oil's record profits and basically giving us a rebate on $4-$5 per gallon gas over the last six months isn't it?

I freely admit that I scoffed at Bush's attempt to achieve anything with his "package". I do not scoff at getting some of my money back for the ridiculous gas prices we have been forced to pay today.

And no, I will not shed a tear for Exxon and Chevron et al if they make a few billion less than they thought they would this year.

I don't even think it's negative though. It's like he's jealous that he's not the cheerleader. No one, and I mean NO ONE, somehow finds a connection between Obama and Britney Spears/Paris Hilton. It's just weird in its stupidity.
