This deserves the OBVIOUS tag. John McCain has always been primarily about John McCain first, and everyone else second. He has used his war record as a sword and shield to bolster his political career. That political career has been entirely self-aggrandizing. The guy has never faced a difficult opponent, and it shows.

I will vote for Obama, but I actually kind of used to like McCain. Probably would have voted for him over Gore if he had been nominated in 2000 (no, did not vote for McFlightSuit).

However, it's amazing how much of a trainwreck his campaign is this time around. I mean staggeringly, atrociously bad, all around and in every aspect.

All this while Pancakes is trying to claim "B-b-but it's *NOT* politics as usual! I am not your typical politician!"

In other news, I was listening to some talk radio show -- which is to say it was an extreme, fanatical right-wing talk radio show -- the other day as I was driving through West Virginia. The woman on the air was complaining about how Obama is "acting like he's president already". She specifically cited how he's asked for ("demanded like a spoiled child throwing a temper tantrum over a lollipop", as she put it) Secret Service protection as proof of her claim.

The funny thing is that any presidential candidate who has a serious shot of making it gets Secret Service protection, whether they want it -- or ask for it -- or not.

Good job, Republicans. The rest of us are talking about Iraq, the economy, job security, the failing dollar, skyrocketing energy costs, foreign policy, and education, and you're blathering on about Secret Service protection and elitism and "the terrorists".

Actually some of them are still talking about wedge issues like abortion and guns. I've witnessed this phenomina first hand in my campaign. Same guy also believes that the "rights" to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" is in the Constitution. Told me he was a Constitutional scholar.

I also would've voted for McCain in 2000, but the Bush team laid down some pretty nasty politics and tore him apart before the nomination. I respect his war record and I think he has -- or used to have -- a lot of intelligent stances on issues. But he's different this time around. McCain went from being well-rounded, thoughtful person to frothing-at-the-mouth right-wing nutjob. I suspect it's because he realized that the right-wing base would never vote for someone any less fanatical and disconnected than Bush ever again.

ELKAY: we should make this thread about making up crazy negative narratives about McCain

After selling out his country again and again while in Vietnamese custody, McCain came back as a celebrity in the armed forces. Given a cushy job, he used his fame to score a hot younger chick. In turn he dumped his wife (who waited faithfully for him while he was in Vietnam) for this new hussy. Using her rich daddy's connections, he got himself hooked up with the Arizona GOP machine and got himself a senate seat. 20 years of scandals and lobbyist favors later, he's the nominee for president.

Shaggy_C: Obama is leading by 1 point in the polls. Bad campaign is ... bad?

Polls mean absolutely nothing at the end of July.

And, the polls do not reflect that it is, in fact, true that McCain has consistently made mind-numbingly stupid errors that would've severely undercut his campaign in every other election year other than the one where there is a black man with a realistic shot at being President.

ifarkthereforiam 2008-08-01 12:59:07 PM
I don't get McCain's need to go all negative. You'd think he would be touting all of the progress we made when the republicans held the presidency and the congress for the first time in over 50 years. He should be pointing out how Bush the Uniter has united the entire country in fully embracing the dittohead philosophy.

The national poll does not really mean all that much, unless it is outrageously lopsided. While sites such as fivethirtyeight.com and pollster.com make predictions based on state level polling. While this is not perfect and, yes, no votes have been tallied it does show that Obama is making inroads in traditionally Republican states.

Unless McCain can get on the active side of things, rather than the reactive... I feel that he is in a lot of trouble.

Looks like you're buying into the media ratings machine. Check any electoral map on the internet. Be it electoral-vote.com or pollster.com. You will notice that Obama is beating McCain by a much larger margin than just 1%. All the media outlets are just telling you that so you can watch their advertisements.

You don't have to make stuff up about McCain to make him look bad. All you have to do is listen to him talk for an hour. He should say enough stuff in that time to sink his chances over and over. But, McCain isn't interesting. He does not result in ratings since people fully expect him to say stupid stuff. There is no scandal that he could do that could get people's attention since they'll just go 'Meh, its McCain. Are you surprised by this?' The news sees him as exciting as the traffic report (not the weather report since the news LOVES freaking out about that).

I did vote for McCain in the 2000 primaries, because I knew even then how much of a disaster Dubya would be. I knew that American red-necks were dumb enough to vote for the phony Texas Cowboy from Connecticut.

Sure enough, I wasn't disappointed.

hubiestubert [TotalFark] 2008-08-01 01:03:50 PM
So, pretty much his greatest criticism is that he's too popular and keeps dodging bullets. And that when you have folks who worked for the campaign who point out that these sort of tactics and veering off from actual issues is beneath the candidate, the response is that they were removed for that very reason.

Using the prop that the RNC and others are making attacks, not the McCain campaign is weak. Which is what the campaign really is at this point.

OneNutSaloon: Actually some of them are still talking about wedge issues like abortion and guns.

Gun control is always my favorite. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool liberal and I also own a gun, and that usually puts their head into a spin. They can't grasp the notion that someone who identifies with a political notion might not necessarily march lockstep with every single issue that party stands for.

I especially liked drawing parallels between gun control and domestic spying programs. Their argument in favor of our own government spying on us was almost always "Well if you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear." I would let that go for a few minutes, then steer the conversation towards mandatory waiting periods and extensive background checks as prerequisites for gun purchases. Naturally, they'd howl and scream about how egregiously un-American and un-Constitutional such checks were. After I let them have their little rant, I'd point out ...

"But as you said, if you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear, right?"

They would get so mad. You could see them literally come apart from being torn apart over maintaining their political party's two conflicting talking points.
