So many haters...

As a man with a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance, while I don't enjoy the same kind of aesthetic that Dream Theater's vocalist has, I can certainly appreciate it.

/Loves me some Petrucci

SchistForebrains 2008-07-29 03:17:54 AM
There is no vocal. And it is amazing, gave me goosebumps. But I am a DT geek. I saw Petrucci play this in Phoenix with G3 a few years back. If I recall the sound went wonky on it for a few minutes, so you could barely hear the guitar. John kept at it and finished in full form.

I'm going to take a shot at writing these headlines for the jaded music fans Fark tends to attract...

Your dose of guitar masturbation from some guy that you're bound to say is overrated and emotionless. Bonus: A rigid and also overrated yeti on drums.

How did I do?

/when is something from G3 *NOT* guitar masturbation?
//NTTAWWT
///in small doses

Petrucci is sooo overrated. I might as well watch him masturbate. And WTF is up with the yeti on drums?

Saw them in Seattle (DT) in May. Awesome show. They are so great live, that's one of the things I really don't think gets across in recordings... It's the excitement and the fun that makes it for me.

James LaBrie sounds like he's got too much cock in his throat when he sings.

YARWALLLARRRLLLLLWAAAAAAAAAAAA...

As my music teacher used to say "If you don't enunciate, you may as well just not sing or find a band with low vocal standards"

As for the Petrucci... DELICIOUS!

No, you're a tard. But if this was masturbation, then the blues is like making love to the same woman you've been farking every night for the last 60 years... in exactly the same positions... with exactly the same number of pelvic thrusts each time... and she looks like Mary Ann Bevans. Boooooring.

Seriously, how can you define a whole genre of music around one chord progression and one scale? It makes no sense. If you've heard one blues song, you've heard 'em all.

/FWIW, this sucked too
//would've sucked more with some James LaBrie

Petrucci is way better than he is given credit for. I like DT, not a huge fan, and I say it's because of the damn vocals. LaBrie goes for the operatic metal thing, and it comes out whiny.

Buckethead? Seriously? No way...

I had similar thinking years ago. But then I got yelled out by truly educated musicians.

Don't confuse "rock blues" with "the blues." The Blues has been played for over 100 years. It isn't defined by a chord progression or a scale. There are a number of reharmizations of the typical 12 bar blues and numerous scales and arpeggios to play. Some blues are 8 bars, some are 16. Some are in common time, some are waltzes, some are in 6/8.

The blues is a wide genre.

ilmaestro: Really? You have to be better at something in order to not like someone else doing it?

there's no denying the skill of this guy...or any number of similar artists

But I'll never understand the appeal of listening to such calculated, passionless music. I shouldn't belittle it - maybe I'd enjoy it more if I had a better appreciation for just how skillful he is. But the act of proving one's skillfulness never seemed very interesting to listen to.

There probably isn't a sloppier guitar player than Neil Young, but I'd rather listen to him any day than someone with precise chops and the constant need to prove it by playing every scale up and down the neck for two hours in front of a silent, note-taking audience

I certainly appreciate this guy's skill -- while I do not care for Dream Theater's music you have to admit he is a fine player. (and his instructional video is sick).

But like many here I cannot explain why I would rather hear Elmore James run a butterknife up the neck of an out of tune Kay than listen to this for pleasure. Maybe it has something to do with that EMG-ish middy-poo-drive tone instrumental guitarists all seem to favor. I can't tell one from the next sometimes.

I will note that the points I found most interesting musically were when he slows it down at about 4:00 and when he played the jimmy page-ish riffs at 5:45 -- and not the shredding.

Now dust my broom.

Who the hell hasn't heard of John Petrucci in this place? Dream Theater kicks ass!

/has every CD except for a few live ones and Systematic Chaos

ebarus 2008-07-29 11:06:50 AM
Petrucci is totally over-rated. Saw him, Satriani and Paul Gilbert at G3 in Boston. Gilbert farking OWNED that stage from one side to the other and unlike either Petrucci or Satch, he shared the stage with his band, everyone got some crowd-attention lovin's. And he brought Bruce Bouillet with him so it was like a Racer X reunion. I was still buzzing about that show a month later.

Petrucci played the same patterns, same scales on each song in his set. Sometimes faster, sometimes slower, sometimes on the high strings, sometimes on the low strings and he played them all like a robot. A sloppy robot. A sloppy, drunken robot. You know it's bad when you go to a GUITAR wankfest and you're having more fun watching the drummer for one performance than the guitarist. Ol' Dude Love was having a blast behind the kit.

//Shred-head
///Can't do better, but I know who can

I think Petrucci is a great guitarrist in a band that used to be very good but took a terrible turn after Scenes from a Memory.

Still, on Saturday I was within 10 yards of Mark Knopfler playing his Strat (and National and Les Paul and Telecaster and others). He's tops as far as I'm concerned.

HeatherPK 2008-07-29 12:04:56 PM
Rickenbacker: I've tried, I really have, but I just don't GET Buckethead.

Which albums have you tried? Colma is solid and accessible (as in, real ballads and song structure). I also like most of Monsters & Robots. I'm a fan of the Praxis album Transmutation as well.

I don't get his shred-wankery stuff at all. I feel he does better when he's surrounded by musicians who pull him back from the noodling.

Buckethead really needs to calm down and get a BJ.

curmudge: Just a question for the haters, can you do better?

I am not a better guitar player than John Petrucci, therefore my opinion on music is worthless.

Seriously, this type of logic is fail to the highest power.

It reminds me of a thread about the Minnesota Vikings a few days ago.

Guy 1: Adrian Peterson gets injured a lot.

Guy 2: Adrian Peterson is awesome and you have no idea what you are talking about! I'd like to see you last a minute as a running back in a college football game! ROFL!!!11one!!!

Guy 1: I would suck as a college football player, therefore Adrian Peterson doesn't get injured a lot.

HeatherPK: Buckethead really needs to calm down and get a BJ.

he only does like 2 solos on it, but that 'bucket of bernie brains' record had the best ive heard him play. he was playing that(still playing?)les paul looking guitar and lots of pentatonic action with splashes of the typical buckethead stuff and it was great. if theres more like that id be a way bigger fan. i was never too impressed when he first hit the scene because i had already heard shawn lane, who can improvise.

Why can't we just make a standard thread for guitar videos?

1. Anyone with an intimate knowledge of music theory plays without soul.
2. If it's fast it has to be good.
3. If it's fast it has to be bad.
4. You can't do better, so you can't comment on it, but I can.
5. (Insert name here) sucks/rocks.
6. You don't actually mean what you're saying. Let me tell you why.
7. You're an idiot because you disagree with me.
8. Occasional thoughtful positive/negative comment drowned out by the above.

There. Now we can all get back to inventing the anal bum cover.

/you folks that qualify for #8, thanks.
