I don't know how to pronounce that so fark it

This must be a paid advertisement, and if it is, it would be really nice if Drew or someone would say so, because otherwise I have a real question as to whether this is an unfair or deceptive trade practice in violation of 16 C.F.R. 255 as a failure by an endorser (Fark) to identify a remunerative relationship with a seller (cuil), because there is no way the good folks at Fark believe cuil is better than Google because looking at the link and playing around with it, it appears that cuil is the suckiest search engine since About.com.

7of7 [TotalFark] 2008-07-28 08:18:35 AM
This "cuil" place is on a major marketing blitz today. Maybe they should've made their search engine not suck before they paid Slashdot and the rest of the shiatty tech blogs to put up stories about it.

LarsThorwald: This must be a paid advertisement

It was featured on NPR this morning as well. I think it's just a sign of a slow news day.

Step 1: Search "best page in the universe"
Step 2: Become bewildered at bizarre results format.
Step 3: Click on what appears to be the top result.
Step 4: Page not found.

Cuil apparently does not believe there is a best page in the universe. I do not think I could spend much time with such a hopelessly pessimistic search engine.

Is this pronounced "Swill"? I am not impressed with their product naming skills.

You're right. It put Zombo.com as it's number 2 result.

tried it...it's full of fail

solaron 2008-07-28 08:27:37 AM
Their 'About' link doesn't even work.

EatHam [TotalFark] 2008-07-28 08:28:02 AM
Apparently it indexes three times the number of pages as Google does.

The content of those pages is, however, a secret, so they can't display them when you search for them.

EatHam [TotalFark] 2008-07-28 08:28:56 AM
haha, searching for "cuil" doesn't even give their own page in the results.

Nice, clean look. No ads.
The results are relevant to my interests.

Not bad. I think I may try it out for a while.

Smidge204 2008-07-28 08:35:04 AM
I had to Google for "cuil" but still have no idea what they're selling.

When I tried that exact search phrase, what I thought were the first two hits (tough to decide with that layout!) were actually links to other search engines.

Then I decided to try it again to see if the proper result was *anywhere* but I got this:

img214.imageshack.us

Cuil appears to be about as useful and user-friendly as those domain squatting "search engines."

Well if you tried that on Google, I have it on good authority you can break the internet.

\ Never try to search for google on google.

claudek 2008-07-28 08:41:49 AM
It is interesting - last year some time, one of my websites was hammered by the indexing robot. Upon contacting the guy behind it, to stop the indexing of that site, he mentioned that they were doing research. Other webmasters noticed the aggressive behaviour of the indexing robot and were wondering what the research etc was all about (and how to stop the robot). Webmasters dicsussion (new window)
Guess we know now. If their results reflect the information their indexing got, it should in theory provide more thorough results than Yahoo or Google (how much more relevant remains to be seen)

Obvious error as Zombo.com is #1 in my book. You can do ANYTHING at zombo.com.

No, thanks.

They don't have to be as good as google, just good enough that Google, MS, et al notices them and cuts them a fat check.

TribeFan695 2008-07-28 08:51:32 AM
Doesn't look all that impressive right now, but this site was launched only 12 hours ago. I'll wait a week to judge it.

sullyman 2008-07-28 08:52:23 AM
Weird. I search a term and it returned 10 pages of results. Every page had the same links, only in a different order.

ganpachi 2008-07-28 08:58:09 AM
If google is last year then this must be soooo 1997.

atomsmoosher 2008-07-28 08:58:42 AM
I liked the look, but it couldn't find the automated monkey band at Wonderland Pier in Ocean City, NJ. Therefore it sucks.

Hmm, I agree with their privacy policy... but I disagree with their suckage policy.

'We didn't find any results for "John Mccain"'

So they don't think he's been very productive in Congress, either.

swahnhennessy 2008-07-28 09:02:38 AM
I like how slow it is.

Really, they should have worked the kinks out before releasing it an d going on a media blitz.

But the fact that it can't find a single page with that query makes it completely useless.

Major suckage on Cuil. My anti-virus software even caught a malware upload attempt by Cuil. Beware.

BradBrening 2008-07-28 09:09:17 AM
Strange. I've never heard my browser make such a loud sucking sound from visiting a link before.

Cornwell [TotalFark] 2008-07-28 09:09:54 AM
That's what they said about infoseek when google showed up!

Also, no easy-to-find dedicated image-search? I don't think that'll be all that successful.

roddack 2008-07-28 09:09:56 AM
I typed in WTF and that stupid engine found nothing Google however me 68,300,000 pages with WTF

Google > This crap

Also I always feel dirty and cheap when I don't use Google

40yoVirgin [TotalFark] 2008-07-28 09:11:40 AM
We'll be back soon...

Due to overwhelming interest, our Cuil servers are running a bit hot right now. The search engine is momentarily unavailable as we add more capacity.

Thanks for your patience.

heh... fail

Myth Sammich 2008-07-28 09:12:49 AM
This "engine" has to be a joke.

Searched:
Cuil= nothing about Cuil.
Google= everything Google.
Yahoo= everything Google.
anything esle= no result, page stopped loading.

about Cuil link fails.

/Cuil fails. All hail our Google overlords!

There are articles all over the Internet about Fark using advertisements as articles. Got banninated for a few days trying to post one of them once.

Really horrible search engine etiquette in play here.

Common sense would require a search to at least provide "Did you mean ?" options. This allows you to familiarize yourself with the limitations of a search engine and intuit how the search engine goes about its business for further queries.

It's almost as if cuil is telling me that I was wrong to make the search that I did.

Fat and Nasty 86 [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-07-28 09:21:26 AM
We didn't find any results for "peyton manning"

Some reasons might be...

* a typo. Please check your spelling.
* your search includes a term that is very rare. Try to find a more common substitute.
* too many search terms. Please try fewer terms.

Finally, try to think of different words to describe your search.

Fark that crap.

This will fail because people can't pronounce the name. "Cuil?" Coo-EEL? Quill? fark it, I'm using google.

nekom [TotalFark] 2008-07-28 09:24:26 AM
The Icelander: This will fail because people can't pronounce the name.

According to the NPR story, it's pronounced `cool' and it's named after some Irish saint or something.
