Interesting... Good find subby.

"It's not like we didn't have our eyes open. We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do."

...so apparently they didn't go looking for those six other planes after they disappeared, eh?

TheOther [TotalFark] 2008-07-27 05:33:00 PM
However, Lieutenant Colonel Cynthia Ryan of the US Civil Air Patrol has said Fossett, whose body or plane was never found, could still be alive. She said: "I've been doing this search and rescue for 14 years. Fossett should have been found. "It's not like we didn't have our eyes open. We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do."

If they're so good at what they do, why didn't they find the six other planes before?

Right!? We found 6 other planes while looking for him... idiots.

He claimed to friends and family he previously found a portal to a different dimension and went looking for it again. He went into detail about it with people close to him. I guess he found it and doesn't want to come back to us.

Those guys weren't bored old rich dudes, so they didn't care enough to look.

Wait...I think that describes most pilots...

The choice of plane was also a baffling one - a Bellanca Citabria Super Decathlon, which, according to risk assessor Robert Davis said was constructed from a steel and wood frame, but actually covered in fabric, making it easy to dismantle.

...If anything, a wood and fabric airplane is harder to disassemble. Or it is if you want to put it back together ever again. I guess it'd be easier to completely destroy than a metal-skinned airplane.

Davis conducted an eight-month investigation for insurers Lloyd's of London, said to face a £25 million payout on Fossett's death.

Fosset was a billionaire. I doubt $50 million dollars would be enticing enough to fake his own death.

I discovered that there is absolutely no proof that Steve Fossett is actually dead. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I'm a man who deals in facts, and I don't really care if he is alive or dead, it make no difference to me.

There's no proof Amelia Earhart died either.
There are people who believe Elvis is still alive.

He's as dead as a man can be.

Hit post too soon.

I don't seem to recall that Decathlons are easily trailerable. If I wanted to disappear, I'd choose something that can easily be loaded on to a truck. There are plenty of aircraft that are just as capapble as a Super Decathlon for flying (perhaps not for aerobatics, but that's not what he was using it for) that are easily trailer-able. Then he could land in the middle of nowhere, load it on to a trailer, and completely disappear, and never worry about anyone finding the airframe or wreckage.

I he wanted to fake his own death I am sure he could have found a body with the same physique as him, dress him up in his clothes and have the plane explode when it crashes and burns so no dna can be found while you parachute to safety and then live on some island nation you own

This is some fantasy world you live in. Tell me, what color is the sky there?

It is indescribably hard to so completely destroy a body as to be unable to recover DNA from the remains, PARTICULARLY after the spectacular advances in technology after - and due to - 9/11. The phrase "too small a sample" is no longer in the labs' vocabulary. Now, "can't find a match" is common, because it requires some DNA sample from elsewhere to match a person to.

Other possibilities that are probably much more likely:

He committed suicide.

His plane was completely destroyed, because it was covered in fabric and had a partial wood frame.

That's the funny part... there was a whole mess about Fossett's family not wanting to pay to help fund the search effort, because common practice in Nevada is that these searches are on the taxpayer's dime.

Well, it's pretty damn obvious that they went FAR beyond a typical search when looking for Fossett. They certainly tried harder to find him than they would for anyone else.

Fossett's disappearance sparked the biggest search in American history, with the Civil Air Patrol's Black Hawks, fitted with infra-red technology, joined by over 30 private planes and internet experts scanning the Nevada desert looking for clues.

What help is a internet expert in the search for a body?

"It's not like we didn't have our eyes open. We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do."

God I love Fark. I mean, it wasn't 3 comments in until someone called this out. It was the first thing that jumped out when I skimmed the article. I wonder if the people who say these things look at them later and go, "doh!"

Maybe it was taken out of context but it's still the fact that, man, I see in Fark the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shiat we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

So there

If you were good at what you do you would have found those six planes soon after they went down, not years later, on accident.
